    My 1935 Auburn By Bill Winter The Auburn Automobile Company was established in 1900, although it was not incorporated until August, 1903. The company evolved from the Eckert Carriage Company of Auburn, Indiana, when the sons of the owner got interested in the horseless carriages that were emerging. With the help of the carriage company’s craftsman a prototype vehicle was running in 1900. The first production car was offered in 1903 for $1,400 and approximately 100 were sold. The company had its ups and downs, but under the leadership of E. L. Cord, sales reached over 20,000 in 1929. In 1930 sales fell to 11,357 due to the stock market crash and the fact that Auburn was in the final year of a three year body style. Auburn had its last good year in 1931 when the 8-98, designed by former Duesenberg body stylist Alan Leamy, was introduced. Sales were over 32,000. From there things went downhill; in 1932 only 11,000 cars were sold and sales fell to less than 5,000 in 1933. In an effort to improve lagging sales Auburns underwent a major restyling in 1934 and added a welded all-steel body, and a new six-cylinder Lycoming engine, Auburn’s first six since 1930. Sales improved over 1933 to 7,700, but the company continued to lose money. As a further attempt to boost sales, the 1934 was restyled by Gordon Buehrig, also from Duesenberg, to give the car a more racy appearance. He redesigned the grill, hood louvers, and front fenders and achieved what many consider the most stunning Auburn ever.

  • Clark Street Cadillac Began Production, Auto Manufacturing in the United States Was Already Running at Full Speed, and So Was Cadillac
    Detroit was a bustling city in the early 20th century. A new industry was starting to take shape in the city, and would soon make its presence known on a global scale. Mass production of automobiles put Detroit on the map as the “Motor City.” Two of the biggest automobile companies, Ford and General Motors, were located in Detroit. It is said Detroit put the world on wheels. It could also be said that one of these Detroit automakers, Cadillac, a branch of GM, put the world on fancy wheels. Cadillac Motor Car Company began construction on its new Clark Street plant in 1919. The building was completed two years later, but automobile production did not begin until 1927. At the time of completion, the enormous four-story, 2.5-million-square-foot building was considered the “most modern automobile complex in the world.”1 Just two years before production began, in 1925, Clark Street had been widened by 10 feet and paved with asphalt in order to ease the heavy traffic already being experienced by the plant’s builders.2 By the time Clark Street Cadillac began production, auto manufacturing in the United States was already running at full speed, and so was Cadillac. While its competitors generally outperformed the company, Cadillac definitely had the upper hand and the capacity to take a hold of as much of the luxury automobile market as possible. However, within just a couple of years, the depression hit and sales fell dramatically throughout the auto industry. After several rough years that included very low production rates, primarily in the early 1930s, Cadillac sales began to increase and Clark Street workers were working two shifts to keep up with the incredible demand.

Companies can respond to various difficulties by making decisions on their automobile offerings. These decisions are central to relationships between companies and consumers. These decisions included broadening their offerings to address a larger portion of the automobile market, narrowing their offerings to address the company’s financial situation, focusing on current offerings to keep them successful, or switching to other offerings to achieve greater profits. A case-based approach is used to explore the detailed nature of this range of attempts to change. Due to a variety of factors characterized in terms of four levels of explanation, these brands failed. Consequently, these companies’ attempts to transform via offering-related decisions failed. These failures reflect, to a great extent, inabilities to balance the tension between differentiated offerings and economies of scale or market demands.
