2018 SEASON CAPTAINS

Prior to the season opener against Hawai’i, CSU head football coach Mike Bobo announced the team’s 2018 season captains. The captains were voted on by their teammates and will represent the squad throughout the season. Last year, CSU had captains elected each game week.

The four season captains for the 2018 Rams football team: - Senior safety Jordan Fogal - Redshirt sophomore quarterback Collin Hill - Redshirt sophomore fullback Adam Prentice - Senior linebacker Josh Watson 9 COLORADO STATE FOOTBALL

THIS WEEK IN CSU HISTORY -- THE 2002 ROCKY MOUNTAIN SHOWDOWN WAS MORE THAN JUST #ALLTIMERAMS - FAN VOTE A SPIKE TO THE BUFFS For nine days in June, thousands of Col- orado State football fans voted for their by John Hirn, CSU Athletics Historian #AllTimeRams squad. Ask any CSU football fan and they will remember two key things about the 2002 version of the Rocky Mountain Showdown. The first thing they remember is that Bradlee Van Pelt broke loose for a 23-yard touchdown run, turned to Players on the ballot played at CSU from Colorado defender Roderick Sneed and once he crossed the plain of the goal line, spiked the ball into Sneed’s helmet. 1968-2017. No current Rams or players The score ultimately won the game for the Rams and gave them their third win in four years over the great rivals from who finished their careers prior to 1968 Boulder. were included.

The other thing they remember is when Cecil Sapp, fresh from a year off after a foot injury, carried the CU defense on There was a “first team” and a “second his back over the south goal line of Invesco Field at Mile High for the day’s first touchdown. Sapp ran all over the CU defense that day scoring two touchdowns and punishing the Buffs’ line. team”, based on the results of the fan vote. Those two events during the game will always be burned into the memories of more than 70,000 people who wit- nessed them at the stadium and millions more watching the nationally televised game. QB: Bradlee Van Pelt (2001-03) Moses Moreno (1995-97) This piece of CSU history goes beyond those two memorable plays though. The Rams had beaten Virginia the week RB: Kapri Bibbs (2013), Cecil Sapp prior to the Showdown, allowing them a game of experience as they faced the No. 6 Buffs squad. It also gave junior (2000-02) quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt some confidence heading into the rivalry game and he showed it in his interviews with Steve Bartalo (1983-86), Kevin the media during the week. McDougal (1996-99) Van Pelt made statements like “Is this a big game? It’s just another football game, right?” Whether he was poking fun at WR: Michael Gallup (2016-17), Rashard CU fans and players who tried to dismiss the CSU game as just another football game, or he was himself saying every Higgins (2013-15) game was important, Van Pelt showed more confidence in 2002 than his nervous performance in 2001. David Anderson (2002-05), Pete Rebstock (1998-2001), Greg Primus When the Rams finally did beat the Buffs by a very close score of 19-14, it not only was the second time in two weeks (1989-92) they had beat a top-25 team, it was only the third time in school history they had upset a top-10 team (the Rams beat TE: Joel Dreessen (2001-04) No. 10 Wyoming in 1966 and No. 6 Arizona in 1994). Beating CU propelled CSU from un-ranked to No. 19 in the nation. Keli McGregor (1981-84) They remained in the top-25 polls in nine of the next 12 weeks of the season and climbing as high as 16th before an upset loss to UNLV on November 30th. OL: Anthony Cesario (1995-98), Mike Newell (1995-98), Erik Pears The 2002 season also marked the last conference championship season for CSU football, one in which they also beat (2001-04), Weston Richburg all three rival schools along the front range. That had only been done one other time (1999) since the CU rivalry was (2010-13), Ty Sambrailo (2010-13) re-established in 1983 and has not been repeated since. Jake Bennett (2014-17), Mike Brisiel Van Pelt would win the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year Honors and rack up 2,892 yards of total offense. (2002-05), Kevin Call (1980-83), Sapp rushed for 1,601 yards during the season and finished his career with 2,642 yards and remains eighth all-time for Zack Golditch (2015-17), Morgan career yards rushing at CSU. The Rams had 12 all-conference players and offensive lineman Morgan Pears was named Pears (1999-2002) to The Sporting News’ second-team All-America squad. DL: Mike Bell (1975-78), Clark So the next time you look at the video of Van Pelt spiking that ball into Sneed’s helmet, or see Cecil Sapp barrel through Haggans (1996-99), Joey Porter the CU defense carrying players on his back, think about the 2002 season as a whole; a year that will go down as one (1995-98), Brady Smith (1993-95) of the greatest of all time in Rams’ history. Al Baker (1974-77), Guy Miller (2007-10), Sean Moran (1992-95), Adrian Ross (1994-97) LB: Shaquil Barrett (2011-13), Rick Crowell (1996-2000), Kevin McLain (1974-75) Cory James (2012-15), Nate Kvamme (1995-98), Eric Pauly (2000-03) DB: Ray Jackson (1992-95), Greg Myers (1992-95), Earlie Thomas (1967-69), Dexter Wynn (2000-03) Ron Cortell (1985-88), John Howell (1996-97, 1999-2000), Keith King (1975-76), Erik Olson (1996-99) K: Jeff Babcock (2002-04) Steve DeLine (1984-86) P: Jimmie Kaylor (2005-07) Hayden Hunt (2013-16) RET: Dexter Wynn (2000-03) Dallas Davis (1997-2001)

CANVAS STADIUM Canvas Stadium is the new name for Colorado State University's 41,000-ca- pacity multipurpose stadium that opened on the school's Fort Collins campus in 2017. The newly re-branded Canvas Credit Union received naming rights to the facility through a $37.7 million partnership agreement announced in April 2018. The agreement, which stands as one of the larg- est collegiate athletic venue naming agreements in history, was part of an ambitious re-branding initiative being undertaken by the previously brand- The agreement with Canvas Credit Union combined with $20 million given ed Public Service Credit Union, under the direction of company President in 2016 to name Sonny Lubick Field brings the total naming rights revenues and CEO Todd Marksberry. at Colorado State to $57 million for the stadium. The $220 million, 727,000-square-foot stadium proved immensely popular and attractive to fans in its inaugural season of 2017, and drew rave reviews from local and national media, as well national television networks that broadcast Colorado State’s games to large audiences. The Rams set an all- time attendance record with a total of 192,369 fans and a per-game aver- age of 32,062, representing a 16-percent attendance increase from 2016— eighth-highest in all of college football. Season ticket sales also reached an all-time high of 15,477, a 40-percent increase from the 2016 total of 11,054.

The return of CSU football games to campus from Hughes Stadium in 2017 brought the pageantry and celebration of Rams game days back to the heart of the university for the first time in 50 years, providing countless new engagement opportunities for the entire university. The stadium’s design embraces Colorado’s natural beauty, topography and visual connections to the Rocky Mountains from campus and ensures functionality for both game- day and non-game day usage. 16 COLORADO STATE FOOTBALL 2018 Colorado State Football Colorado State Overall Defensive Statistics (as of Aug 27, 2018) STATS -All DEFENSE games Tackles Sacks Pass defense Fumbles blkd # Defensive Leaders gp ua a tot tfl/yds no-yds int-yds brup qbh rcv-yds ff kick saf 55 WATSON, Josh 1 3 10 13 0.5-1 . . 1 1 1-0 . . . 1D FOGAL, Jordan 1 4 8 12 0.5-1 . . 1 . . . . . 18 SCOTT, Braylin 1 5 5 10 ...... 1 . . 7 HICKS, Jamal 1 6 4 10 ...... 52 THOMAS, Tre 1 3 7 10 . . . . 1 . . . . 95 KING, Richard 1 . 6 6 1.0-2 0.5-1 . . 1 . . . . 10 FRANCIS, Tywan 1 . 4 4 ...... 98 HUBBARD, Ellison 1 . 4 4 ...... 33 JONES, Emmanuel 1 2 2 4 1.5-2 . . . 1 . . . . 94 PHILLIPS, Devin 1 . 3 3 1.0-3 0.5-2 ...... 19 BANKS, V.J. 1112 . . .1. .... 44 MCDONALD, Max 1 1 1 2 ...... 8 BRINNON, Quinn 1 . 2 2 ...... 14 HAWKINS, Anthony 1 1 1 2 . . . 2 . . . . . 4 AJAYI, Rashad 1 1 1 2 ...... 53 SMITH, Caleb 1 . 1 1 . . . . 2 . . . . 81 JOHNSON, Olabisi 1 1 . 1 ...... 99 DICKENS, Damion 1 . 1 1 ...... 12 CARTER, Cam'ron 1 1 . 1 ...... 92 PAOGOFIE, Livingston 1 . 1 1 0.5-0 ......
