1 No Limits Freediving "The challenges to the respiratory function of the breath-hold diver' are formidable. One has to marvel at the ability of the human body to cope with stresses that far exceed what normal terrestrial life requires." Claes Lundgren, Director, Center for Research and Education in Special Environments A woman in a deeply relaxed state floats in the water next to a diving buoy. She is clad in a figure-hugging wetsuit, a dive computer strapped to her right wrist, and another to her calf. She wears strange form-hugging silicone goggles that distort her eyes, giving her a strange bug-eyed appearance. A couple of meters away, five support divers tread water near a diving platform, watching her perform an elaborate breathing ritual while she hangs onto a metal tube fitted with two crossbars. A few meters below the buoy, we see that the metal tube is in fact a weighted sled attached to a cable descending into the dark-blue water. Her eyes are still closed as she begins performing a series of final inhalations, breathing faster and faster. Photographers on the media boats snap pictures as she performs her final few deep and long hyperventilations, eliminating carbon dioxide from her body. Then, a thumbs-up to her surface crew, a pinch of the nose clip, one final lungful of air, and the woman closes her eyes, wraps her knees around the bottom bar of the sled, releases a brake device, and disappears gracefully beneath the waves. The harsh sounds of the wind and waves suddenly cease and are replaced by the effervescent bubbling of air being released from the regulators of scuba-divers. -

Río Jamapa, C.P. 94290, Boca del Río, Veracruz, México E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Indo-west Pacific damselfish Neopomacentrus cyanomos was first recorded in the West Atlantic in 2013, when it was found to be common on reefs near Coatzacoalcos, in the extreme southwest corner Gulf of Mexico. During 2014–2015, this species also was found on reefs farther afield in that area, but not in the northwest Gulf, nor the north-eastern tip of the Yucatan peninsula. These data, and information from public databases on invasive reef fishes, indicate that N. cyanomos currently is widely distributed in, but restricted to, the southwest Gulf of Mexico. Mitochondrial DNA barcodes of N. cyanomos from that area match to those for this species from its natural range, but do not indicate the ultimate origin of the Gulf of Mexico fish. Possible modes of introduction to the Gulf of Mexico and the potential for its further spread with negative effects on the native reef-fish fauna are discussed, and directions for future research suggested. -

Fish Census Data Generated by Non-experts In the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary CHRISTY V. PATTENGILL-SEMMENS AND BRICE X. SEMMENS Using non-experts in monitoring programs increases the data available for use in resource management. Both scientists and resource managers have expressed concerns about the value and accuracy of non-expert data. We examined the quality of fish census data generated by Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) volunteers of varying experience levels (non-experts), and compared these data to data generated by experts. Analyses were done using data from three REEF field survey cruises conducted in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). Species composition and structure were comparable between the skill levels. Non-expert datasets were similar to expert datasets, although expert data were more statistically powerful when the amount of data collected was equivalent between skill levels. The amount of REEF survey experience was positively correlated with the power of the data collected. The statistical power of abundance estimates varied between species. These results provide support for use of non- expert data by resource managers and scientists to supplement and enhance monitoring programs. Quantitative benthic monitoring has been conducted at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS) for over 20 years (Viada, 1996). In 1994, a fish assemblage monitoring program was initiated (Pattengill, 1998). Field survey time for this project was often shared with a volunteer-based monitoring program. Participating volunteers were trained in reef fish identification, and accompanied teams of experts in fish identification on several survey cruises. This paper examines the utility of the data collected by the volunteer surveyors for use by the FGBNMS.
