Happy Plant Publication FREE Gift and Garden Centre welcome to Once upon a time (1984 to be precise) in the Buchan village of Mintlaw, 1 mile from Aden Country Park and less than 1/2 hours drive from Aberdeen, a seed was planted named The Happy Plant Garden Centre. Over the years it has grown to become a flourishing business renowned for its quality products and service. Life began as a little wooden shed in a ‘boggy howe,’ but 35 years on it is one of the largest gift and garden centres in the north east of Scotland and has achieved a four-star rating from the Scottish Tourist Board. The site now covers approximately four acres, including a large car park and has over 60 friendly and helpful employees on the payroll, many of them long-term members of staff who have ‘grown up’ with the business. To accommodate the large number of customers, we have ample parking for cars and coaches, as well as disabled parking spaces close to the gift and garden centre entrance. The business has been set up to offer the garden enthusiast everything they could possibly desire from plants to compost, fertilisers to garden furniture, garden lighting to outdoor ornaments. If you are not sure what to do with your garden and you are after inspiration, then visit Happy Plant Garden Centre. You will find us welcoming, friendly and only too willing to help. A long-awaited coffee shop was added in 2005 and extended to meet demand a few years later. The range of goods for sale has also changed over the years with hundreds of suppliers from plants to pet supplies, clothes to food as well as an amazing selection of gifts and homeware.     SNH National Landscape Character Assessment Landscape Character Type 17 COASTAL AGRICULTURAL PLAIN - ABERDEENSHIRE Location and Context The Coastal Agricultural Plain is an extensive Landscape Character Type comprising a low- lying and often very open sweep of exposed farmland in eastern Aberdeenshire where the influence of the sea is particularly strong. It is characterised by its gently undulating landform, relatively large scale, extensive mosses and the influence of development including transmission masts, electricity transmission lines, the A90 and A953, and the gas terminal at St Fergus on its eastern edge. The transition between the Beaches Dunes and Links Landscape Character Type in the east and the hinterland formed by this landscape is very gradual. Key Characteristics Low-lying and very gently undulating landform, with a pattern of subtle ridges and valleys in the north-east. Prominent landmark feature of Mormond Hill on the western edge of the area, which includes the White Horse and White Stag quartz hillside figures, the only such in Scotland. Water courses in broad shallow valleys. Mainly arable farming, with fairly extensive areas of moss and wetland. Large, open, geometric fields. Coniferous forest particularly extensive in southern part of the area. Limited broadleaf woodland, forming rare shelterbelts and small groups around farms. Well settled landscape of dispersed farms, many newer houses and a number of settlements, and occasional mansions in designed landscapes. Communication structures and tall masts

    Aberdeenshire Council - Local Landscape Designations Review report by LUC 1 Cliffs of the North and South East Coasts RANKED CRITERIA Typicality / Representativeness High Narrow coastal strip between Cullen and Fraserburgh, and south of Peterhead, comprising a diverse landscape of sandy beaches and dunes, as well as rocky headlands and sheer cliffs. Rarity / Uniqueness Medium Coastal cliffs are similarly found on the east coast of Aberdeenshire, south of Peterhead, but those on the north coast are more cohesive and form a defined edge to the headland. Intactness and condition Medium Trees and woodland are limited in this windswept landscape. Fields are enclosed by hedgerows and stone dykes, with large farm buildings. Coastal villages are intact. Wildness Medium Accessible and well settled, but dominated by the influence of the sea and the elements, lending the landscape qualities of greater wildness. Scenic qualities High Although narrow, this landscape feels open and large scale due to the influence of the sea and sky, with high headlands, sheer cliffs, narrow inlets, occasional sandy bays and attractive villages. Enjoyment High A popular destination, with tourist accommodation in fishing villages and caravan parks. Accessible via coastal walks and NCN 1, which runs between Cullen and Banff before heading inland. Built heritage assets High Traditional fishing villages constructed in local stone, many of which are Conservation Areas eg Sandend, Portsoy, Banff, Gardenstown, Crovie and Pennan. Several scheduled monuments including Pitsligo Castle (near Rosehearty), Dundarg Castle (NW of New Aberdour) and Castle of Findon (fort & castle south west of Gardenstown). Cultural qualities High Shipyards at Macduff. Slains Castle near Cruden Bay was said to give Bram Stoker the inspiration for Count Dracula's castle.

  • The Civilian and Military Brass Band Musicians of Fraserburgh
    Bands of the Broch – the civilian and military brass band musicians of Fraserburgh Gavin Holman, 7 August 2021 Fraserburgh is a town on the east coast of Scotland, north of Aberdeen, which benefited greatly from the growth of the herring fishing industry in the 19th century, with over 1,000 boats using the harbour at its peak. Fraserburgh Harbour, c. 1900 Fraserburgh Brass Band (1) [c. 1850 - 1863] The first appearance of a brass band is on 1 January 1851, when the Fraserburgh Brass Band played the National Anthem at a soirée arranged by the Abstinence Committee at the Town Hall.1 The Band next performed various selected airs during the preparation for the launch of the clipper barque “Eliza”, built by John Webster in Fraserburgh, length 109 ft, registering 246 tons, on 16 April 1851. This was the largest vessel built at the port to that date.2 A few years pass until the Band is recorded again, leading a procession of tenants and villagers of Pitsligo celebrating the marriage of Miss Forbes of Pitsligo to Charles Henry Rolle Trefusis on Thursday 29 July 1858.3 The temperance movement was growing at this time, and a new Total Abstinence Society was established at Cairnbulg and Inverallochy.
