Sincerely, Dimas Resendez California College Umpires-North, President MESSAGE FROM: SUP National Coordinator Staff Hello Everyone, This has been another successful post-season run for the Softball Umpire Program. Several Western Region people were selected to work post-season assignments. Most notable are Chris Drumm who was selected to work the Women’s College World Series, John Bennett who was selected to work the DII National Championship in Salem, Virginia and Dave Long who was selected to work the DIII National Championship in Tyler, Texas. There were also several DII and DIII regional assignments in the Western Region. The Division III committee has now adopted a similar playoff system to DI and DII, which will mean more opportunities on the west coast for Regional and Super regional assignments in the future. FOOD FOR THOUGHT CORNER Always find the time to tell and show your family and friends how much you care! You only live once………… CCSUA Newsletter Page 4 FOCUS AND PREPARTION By CCSUA Training Coordinator-John Bennett The college softball season ended for many of us a few weeks ago and I hope you have taken some time to unwind and relax. Now that summer has begun many of us will have already started working travel ball games, whether ASA, PGF, USSSA or Triple Crown. Even when we umpire games on these fields for other associations we are still being watched as college umpires. It is not time to get sloppy or not work your best game, every game. Keep working on your rules, mechanics and game management. And do not forget another important aspect of being an example as a college umpire: be professional in everything you do. This includes: accepting your assignments, contacting your UIC or partners before the games, arriving at the game at least one hour before game time, dressing in an appropriate manner on the way to the game, wearing a neat and clean uniform, and doing a good pre-game with your partner. Mark your calendar for September 1, 2014, which is the date we consider the new college season to start. This is also the date you should start re-reading the Rules book and reviewing the CCA Manual. Try to spend at least one hour on reviewing each book every week until the actual season starts at the end of January 2015! CAMPS!!! In last month’s newsletter we posted information on several camps that have been noted on the SUP Central Hub. If you have not done so, please visit the SUP Hub and look at the new posting of camps. Cost: $200 CCSUA Newsletter Page 5 RULES CORNER Thanks to all of you who responded to our question regarding “What new rule did you learn this season.” Below are the responses: Did you know: My rule that I learned was that “Drumsticks” are considered artificial noisemakers, Rule 5.11.2. I learned that banging bats and balls in the dugouts is misuse of equipment and a warning should be issued when brought to the attention of the umpire by an opposing coach. If it continues the offender shall be ejected, Rule 13.6. I learned that you can have a running lane violation on a batter who has received ball four, if the catcher throws the ball to first base with a runner on third base. A.R. 12.25.2^2, pg. 43 of Dee’s Interpretation document. The rule that I learned was that if a pitcher applies foreign substances (dirt, saliva, resin) on a ball a second time after she had already been called for an illegal pitch the first time she is ejected, Rule 10.13. I learned that on all pick-off attempts, you must ask for help from your partners, if the coach requests, Rule 15.4.3. Our next newsletter will be issued in August, as I’m going on vacation ! Have a wonderful summer Everyone!!!!! PHOTO CORNER CCSUA Newsletter Page 6 CCSUA Newsletter Page 7 .

  • Factors Influencing the University Choice of Ncaa Division I Softball Players
THE SMART JOURNAL Page 35 FACTORS INFLUENCING THE UNIVERSITY CHOICE OF NCAA DIVISION I SOFTBALL PLAYERS Kary Kankey, Norfolk State University Jerome Quarterman, Florida State University Abstract This investigation was designed to examine the choice factors softball players considered most impor- tant when selecting a college or university of NCAA Division I member institutions. A questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 196 students (freshmen through seniors) of 10 NCAA Divi- sion I member institutions in the state of Ohio. Descriptive statistics were followed in the analyses of the data. Factors that were most influential for softball players’ choice of a college or university were availability of a major or academic program, head coach, career opportunities after graduation, social atmosphere of the team, and the amount of financial aid. The least influential choice factors were friends, affiliation of the university (religion, public, private), media coverage, softball team Web site, softball team sponsorships, high school coach, and ethnic or gender ratio of the university. Rec- ommendations for college softball coaches and all staff members involved in recruiting softball play- ers of NCAA Division I are discussed in the article as well as recommendations for further research. INTRODUCTION The majority of colleges in the United States sponsor intercollegiate athletics for their students. Since 1910, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has governed intercollegiate athletics. In- cluding provisional members, 1,258 colleges and universities are members of the NCAA (2003). One of the NCAA championship sports is softball. NCAA figures from January 2000 show that 853 NCAA institu- tions sponsored softball (NCAA, 2000).
