Transantiquity
TransAntiquity TransAntiquity explores transgender practices, in particular cross-dressing, and their literary and figurative representations in antiquity. It offers a ground-breaking study of cross-dressing, both the social practice and its conceptualization, and its interaction with normative prescriptions on gender and sexuality in the ancient Mediterranean world. Special attention is paid to the reactions of the societies of the time, the impact transgender practices had on individuals’ symbolic and social capital, as well as the reactions of institutionalized power and the juridical systems. The variety of subjects and approaches demonstrates just how complex and widespread “transgender dynamics” were in antiquity. Domitilla Campanile (PhD 1992) is Associate Professor of Roman History at the University of Pisa, Italy. Filippo Carlà-Uhink is Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter, UK. After studying in Turin and Udine, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and as Assistant Professor for Cultural History of Antiquity at the University of Mainz, Germany. Margherita Facella is Associate Professor of Greek History at the University of Pisa, Italy. She was Visiting Associate Professor at Northwestern University, USA, and a Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Münster, Germany. Sexual Assault In
April 2021 Sexual Assault Awareness Month Brooklyn Nelson Though the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 70s began the change of Western societal views and traditional beliefs towards sexual behavior and liberty, many components of sex were still considered taboo: sexual assault and violence. Victims’ voices continued to be hushed after history’s long-existing standard of protecting abusers over survivors. As early as the Renaissance, there has existed art depicting rape, founded on Greek mythology, as “heroic” with the male victor conquering the property of his opposer--the wife. Exemplified in the 1618 painting, “The Rape of Daughters of Leucippus,” displays Phoebe and Hilaeira, the two daughters of Leucippus, being raped by Greek myths Castor and Pollux. The idolization and reinforcement of sexual violence since then has proven to be a barrier for survivors and their healing but feminist artists in recent decades have tried to change the narrative. Instead of using paint and canvas to publicize the issue, artists Yoko Ono and Suzanne Lacy used the less known medium of performance art to provide new perspectives on sexual assault. In one of Ono’s most famous pieces, the 1964 Cut Piece, she performs by silently sitting on stage and allowing the audience to cut away pieces of her clothing, symbolizing the trauma and loss of identity faced after sexual assault, a simple yet aggressive idea for female empowerment. Less than a decade later, artist Suzzane Lacey, alongside Judy Chicago and Sandra Orge, addressed sexual assault similarly with the performance art approach when creating a piece named, “Ablutions,” in 1972. -

The Lineup: Passion, Transgression, and Mythical Women in Roman Painting BETTINA BERGMANN Mount Holyoke College [email protected] Pasiphae, Phaedra, Scylla, Canace, Myrrha – five mythological women who commited crimes of adultery, incest, treason, bestiality, and suicide – once adorned the walls of a small room in a second-century villa outside Rome. About one third lifesize and dressed in pastel colors, each figure stood alone against a white background, identified by the Latinized Greek name painted beside her head as well as by a posture of distress and a tell- ing attribute of self-destruction. Today the five women hang in separate, gilded frames in the small Sala degli Nozze Aldrobrandini of the Vatican Museums, where they are routinely overlooked by visitors gazing at the more famous Roman frescoes above them, the Aldobrandini Wedding and the Odyssey Landscapes1. 1 — This was held as a keynote lecture at the conference “Feminism & Classics VII: Visions in Seattle”, in May 2016. The artistic representation of these narratives such as the abduction of Persephone by Hades, abduction of Helen by Paris or abduction of Orithyia by Boreas interchangeably use ‘rape’ and ‘abduction’ and portray women as the embodiments of beauty and sexuality transforming them into crimes committed in hot blood and passion. The sensuality of the paintings is heightened by both subject matter and expressive use of colour and exhibit pain, fear, revulsion, or sometimes passivity by the abducted maiden contrasted by the all-powerful and supreme depictions of Gods. The violent seizure and seductive image, along with the opulent and exuberant artistic nudity intensify the eroticism and poetry of such creations. This paper strives to examinethe sensual, sexual, and allegorical implications of rape and abduction in the select monumental mythological abduction and rape paintings of Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens such as The Rape of Daughters of the Leucippus, The Rape of Orithyia by Boreas,The Rape of Europa, The Rape of Hippodamia, andThe Rape of Proserpine. -

Enclosing in a short space a remarkable quantity of information, it offers concise and comprehensive accounts of most of the myths that had come to matter beyond local boundaries, providing its readers with their most popular variants. This study concentrates on the most familiar stories contained in the first book of the Bibliotheke and their proper place in the overall structure of Greek mythology. Chapter One is dedicated to the backbone of Apollodoros’ work: the chronological organisation of Greek mythical history in genealogies. It discusses the author’s individual plan in the arrangement and presentation of his material and his conscious striving for cohesion. -

Purves, Chair In this dissertation, I challenge the dominant narrative in Iliad scholarship that has tended either to disregard feminine voices or to dismiss their relevance to the poem’s overall evaluation of heroic society. My methodology is primarily literary-critical, but I also make use of anthropological and sociological theories of gender, such as R.W. Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinity. I argue that feminine voices and perspectives are central to the Iliad ’s moral program, and that the epic uses them to critique the destruction that the traditional masculine values of Homeric warriors cause to community and family ties. The Iliad does not valorize the strict binary between masculinity and femininity that is upheld by certain characters in the epic, but instead suggests that some “feminine” qualities are intimately linked with a warrior’s identity and role as protector. -

F or some years it has been my intention to respond to a request arising from various quarters, and add to my larger work on the Philosophy of the Greeks a short sketch of the same subject. But until the third edition of the History was brought to a conclusion I had not the leisure for the work. Sketches of thi3 kind will proceed on different lines according to the aim which is held in view. My object has been primarily to provide students with a help for academical lectures, which would facilitate preparation, and save the time wasted in writing down facts, without interfering with the lecturer’s work or imposing any fetters upon it. Hence I have made it my task to give my readers a pic ture of the contents of the philosophical systems, and the course of their historical development, which should contain all the essential traits— and also to put into their hands the more important literary references and sources. But as in the last points I have not gone beyond what is absolutely necessary, so in the historical account I have as a rule indicated the parts very briefly with which historical considerations of a general kind or special explanations and inquiries are connected, or in viii AUTHOR'S PREFACE. which, it seemed proper to supplement my earlier work.
