THE IVIES VERSUS... THE 14-GAME TOURNAMENT Here is the conference-by-conference breakdown of Ivy League teams’ records The “14-game tournament” is a term used by many who cover and follow against non-League opponents during the 2011-12 regular season: Ivy League men’s basketball to describe the conference’s double round- robin, regular-season schedule because decides the League’s automatic bid Conference 2011-12 Record representative in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship as well America East 9-8 as the Ivy champion. As the only Division I conference without a postseason Atlantic Coast 3-3 tournament, the League’s 14-game conference slate becomes the “tournament” Atlantic Sun 0-0 to determine which Ivy team gets a confirmed ticket to the Big Dance in March. Atlantic 10 3-3 Big East 1-8 The bulk of the “tournament” is played over six weekends from late January to Big South 0-0 early March in a grueling Friday-Saturday format that have tested the League’s Big Ten 0-3 best over the years. In 55 Ivy League seasons, only 13 teams have gone a perfect Big 12 0-0 14-0 in Ivy play. Penn has done it seven times (1969-70, 1970-71, 1992-93, 1993- Colonial Athletic Association 2-3 94, 1994-95, 1999-2000 and 2002-03), Princeton five times (1968-69, 1975-76, Conference USA 1-0 1990-91, 1996-97 and 1997-98) and Cornell once (2007-08). Metro Atlantic Athletic 6-4 Mid-American 0-1 On the other end of the spectrum, there has been four times that a 10-4 record Mid-Eastern Athletic 1-0 won the Ivy title. Interestingly, it happened in four-straight seasons from 1983-84 Mountain West 0-0 to 1986-87. Penn did it twice in 1984-85 and 1986-87 with identical 13-14 overall Northeast 8-5 records, the most overall losses for an Ivy team to win the League title. Princeton Ohio Valley 0-1 took home the 1983-84 title and Brown did the same in 1985-86 with 10 Ivy wins. Pacific-12 1-1 Patriot League 6-7 When two or more teams tie for the Ivy title, the League conducts a playoff Southeastern 0-1 to determine its NCAA Tournament automatic bid recipient.
