GOAL AND TASKS The chess Festival is held on purpose of chess promotion and popularization; Tasks of these competitions are: development of international chess relations; preparation of forward-looking reserve; upgrading sports skill of chess players. 2. TERMS AND VENUE This regulation is the official invitation to participate in the 3rd International chess Festival «Black Pawn» (hereinafter the Festival) held on November 1-3, 2019. Organizers provide beverages and treat for participants in the game zone during the tours. 4. COMPETITION MANAGEMENT General management and the organization of competitions are carried out by: Brest city executive committee; department of education, sport and tourism of Brest city executive committee, manager of sport and tourism sector Okrug Olesya Valentinovna; Public Association «Belarusian Chess Federation»; Direct management of the Festival is carried out by: Private Unitary Enterprise on service delivery “Knizhny Shkap”, Festival director Taberko Katerina, tel.(+375)29 6250311, [email protected]; Panel of judges, chief judge Berlin Tatyana, tel.: (+375) 29 2210048, blackpawnby@ com ; Competitions are held according to the existing Rules of FIDE, this Regulation and Standing Orders. The decisions made by the Chief judge of competitions are final. Organizers reserve the right to make reasonable changes to this Regulation and other conditions of reception. Final interpretation of this regulation remains for organizers. THIS REGUATION IS THE OFFICIAL INVITATION TO COMPETITIONS. Official page of the Festival and the Cup: http://shkap.by/blackpawn 5. PARTICIPANTS OF THE COMPETITION Players from Belarus, near and far abroad countries residents are invited for participation. All people, except players, have to be classified as accompanying persons. Access to the game and entertaining zone is allowed only to the persons accredited by organizers. The festival is inclusive, we provide barrier-free environment for people with disabilities, special chessboards for the blind and visually impaired. 6. TOURNAMENTS The Festival consists of four rapid tournaments: Tournament A — 2012 year of birth and younger, Tournament В — 2010 year of birth and younger, Tournament С — 2006 year of birth and younger, Tournament D (no age limit, black make the first move), Three tournaments on blitz chess: Tournament E (2011 year of birth and younger), Tournament F (2006 year of birth and younger), Tournament G (no age limit) An open tournament H on classic chess (no age limit); Tournament K on bughouse chess (no age limit) Three tournaments on chess problems solving: tournament L (2011 year of birth and younger), tournament M (2006 year of birth and younger), tournament N (no age limit), tournament Р on chess giveaway (no age limit); three checkers tournaments: tournament R (2010 year of birth and younger), tournament S (2005 year of birth and younger), tournament T (no age limit). two arm-wrestling tournaments: tournament U (ladies of 2003 year of birth and older), tournament V (gentlemen of 2003 year of birth and older) Besides Chapaev, chess-to-touch, speedcubing, staring contest and rock-paper-scissors tournaments will be organized (with no age limit). Organizers reserve the right to unite tournaments at the number of the registered participants less than 40. The A-H tournaments are held on the Swiss system of 9 rounds in each tournament, according to FIDE Rules of chess, except for tournament D where black make the first move. Time control in blitz tournaments – 5 minutes for a play with addition of 2 seconds for each move, starting with the first; time control in rapid tournaments: 10 minutes for a play with addition of 5 seconds for each move, starting with the first; time control in tournaments on classical chess – 30 minutes for a play with addition of 30 seconds for each move, starting with the first. In the tournament on chess problems solution L-N 1,5 hour is given to think it over. The tournament on giveaway chess P and bughouse K is played on the Swiss system in 6 rounds with time control of 5 minutes for a play. Tournaments on rapid checkers R-T are played on the Swiss system in 7 rounds with control of time of 5 minutes for a play. Chess quiz is held among teams of 2-6 players, not more than 3 adults in a team and minimum one child. The play is held in 7 rounds. U and V tournaments on arm-wrestling, and also tournaments on Chapaev, staring contest and rock-paper-scissors tournaments are played on the Swiss system in 5 rounds. Chess-to-touch tournament is played on the Swiss system in 3 rounds. Shooting with flash can be made only in the first five minutes after the beginning of each tour. Only players and judges can stay in a game zone, except for cases when the chief judge gives the permission. Anti-cheater management of FIDE (B.3.4 point) operates this tournament. 7. PRIZES Three winners are defined in each tournament among men (boys) and women (girls). In tournaments with the number of players of more than 150 the quantity of prizes increases to two and more. Winners in each tournament are awarded with valuable prizes, cups, medals and diplomas, prize-winners – with valuable prizes and diplomas. Special prizes and diplomas are set for the oldest and youngest participants of the Festival, in rapid tournaments for the best players of 2011, 2009, 2007 years of birth, veterans (players of 1958 year of birth and older), and also special prizes from our General partner PUE Knizhny Shkap. Awards for A-H tournaments will be given at the closing ceremony, all the others – just after the end of the tournament. Each participant of the Festival will receive a certificate of participation and a gift which he or she will be able to pick up personally only after the official closing ceremony of the Festival. 8. POINTS CALCULATION AND ADDITIONAL INDICATORS In case two and more participants have scored identical quantity of points final places are distributed taking into account the following additional indicators in decreasing order: 1.

    Bughouse Chess (Hawaii Rules) What is Bughouse Chess Bughouse is a chess variation played on two adjoining chessboards by two teams, each comprised of two people. The pieces are set up so that each team member is in possession of an opposite colored chess army. The game is typically played at a fast time control (such as 5 minute, games). Time is kept track by using two chess clocks -- one clock for each chess board, facing so all players can see them. The game is not touch move but rather "clock move", that is, the move is not considered to be made until the player hits his/her clock. Object of the Game Similar to standard chess to goal is to checkmate your opponent(s). Checkmate on either one of the boards results in the end of the game. A time forfeit on either on of the boards also ends the game - with the team of the player who forfeits on time losing the game. If both flags are down the game is a draw. One also does not have to declare check. If a player leaves his/her king in check then the opponent may capture it and claim a win for his/her team. Pieces The pieces are the same as those used in Standard Chess. Rules The game is played by two teams of two players each. This requires that two chessboards be placed side by side with partners sitting on the same side of the table (see above).     OLECHESS 2019 COMPETITIONS – RULES For all competitions, behave with dignity & good sportsmanship, showing respect to your opponent & to the OleChess staff. SIMULTANEOUS EXHIBITION 1. The instructional staff will challenge the entire camp, with each instructor playing all members of his or her class simultaneously. Board assignments will be posted in the tournament room. 2. You will play the black pieces. You must record your game on a score sheet or in your scorebook. 3. At the start of the exhibition, your instructor will come to your board to play the first move and will then proceed to the next board. When your instructor returns to your board, make your move, after which your instructor will make a move in response. The instructor’s move is not considered to be made UNTIL he moves on the next board, or makes another move on your board. This pattern is repeated for each move until your game is fully played out. 4. You must only move when your instructor is present at your board. Moving at other times may draw a warning or forfeiture. 5. If you are not prepared to move when your instructor arrives at your board, you may request a pass and your board will be passed by. After you have passed three times, your instructor has the right not to allow you to pass again so as to speed up play. 6. When your game is over you may quietly watch other games in progress or review your game with another instructor or meet the counselors outside the tournament room for organized activities.

By Eric Holcomb Bend, Oregon Perhaps some of you may recall hearing or reading at one time or another that there are about 1040 board positions and 10120 move sequences in the game of chess, where for example 1040 is the number “1” followed by 40 zeroes – a very large number indeed! (10120 is very much larger still – greater than the number of atoms in the known universe!) In game theory, the complexity of a board game is often expressed in terms of the “state space complexity” (number of legal board positions reachable from the initial position), and the “game- tree size” (number of move sequences). Chess is indeed a very complex game, although not the most complex. Among major board games, that distinction belongs to the Japanese game of Go played on the traditional 19x19 board. (See the Wikipedia article on “Game Complexity.”) In this, the first of two articles, the author will discuss the number of chess board positions, and various estimates of this quantity. In a second article, the author will report on a remarkable coincidence involving one estimate of the number of chess board positions, and also discuss the number of chess move sequences. Although it’s been known for many years that the number of possible chess board positions is at least 1040, an exact calculation of the number of legal positions is impossible in practice because of complications like pawn structure and both kings in check.

    Bughouse chess tournament ​ Regulations: Date and time: Friday, August 9, 11am Tournament open for everyone Playing rules: Bughouse is a realtime form of chess played between two player teams on two separate ​ chessboards. Both boards are placed near to each other and the clocks on the side, so that each player can see the time on both clocks. The special feature of the game is that pieces you capture are transferred to your partner, who is playing with the opposite colour pieces from yourself. He may 'drop' such a piece on an empty square as a subsequent move in his game. A player cannot attempt to hide pieces from the opponent. It is allowed to ‘drop’ a piece with a check or checkmate. Communication during a game: 1. It is illegal for a player to move one of his partner's pieces or in any way physically intervene on his partner's board. For example, he may not advise moves to his partner by moving his finger over his partner's board. 2. Partners may verbally communicate throughout a game. Full communication between partners is allowed. So the player can advise to partner even concrete moves. Team loses if it is in checkmate or exceeds time. The game is drawn as long as it finishes as draw on one of the chess boards. A player may not hide captured pieces from your opponent. Full communication between partners is allowed.
