GOOGLE - Rube Goldberg Machine

Syyn Labs was recently tapped by Google to create a science fair themed Rube Goldberg style machine. The resulting pair of videos - - a short and long version, both directed by Jonathan Zames - (1/10/11).

The long version features 18 unique interactions created to mimic a variety of science fair projects including live hamsters, a windmill, magnets, a model rocket, lasers, and volcanoes. The purpose of this elegant machine is to inspire young scientists around the world, to show that science can be entertaining and fun.

Syyn Labs was also invited to create a new machine that would be performed at the event announcing the Google Global Science Fair initiative - in front of a live audience and streaming LIVE on YouTube!

OK GO (Rock Band) - Rube Goldberg Machine

When the rock band OK GO, famous for their viral videos including the spectacular and award winning "treadmills video", wanted to feature a 4-minute long Rube Goldberg Machine in an upcoming video, they tapped Syyn Labs to build it.

The requirements were that it had to be interesting, not "overbuilt" or too technology-heavy, and easy to follow. The machine also had to be built on a shoestring budget, synchronize with beats and lyrics in the music and end on time over a 3.5 minute song, play a part of the song, and be filmed in one shot. To make things more challenging still, the space chosen was divided into two floors and the machine would use both.

The video officially went “viral” within 36 hours and counted over six million views in the first week. Total views for the end of the first month was over 15 million. It was named both "Video of the Year" and "Best Rock Video" at the 3rd annual UK Awards, and was included in a shortlist of 125 entries out of 23,000 for inclusion in "YouTube Play: A Biennial of Creative Video", a showcase of the best user-created videos from YouTube in conjunction with the Guggenheim Museums.

Artful Engineering! Our Work Die Hard Batteries, commercial MIDI controlled organ using 24 cars (The Cargan)

We all know DieHard batteries are tough, and they recently decided to create a series of videos showing just how much their batteries could take.

To design the perfect real-world experiment, DieHard hired agency Y&R Chicago to work with extraordinary Director James Frost of Zoo Films to build an organ using 24 black and white cars. The cars were all started off of one battery and were able to have their lights and tweaked horns controlled by a keyboard. When they needed a technical team to actually build the project, James came to Syyn Labs (with whom he previously launched the OK go RGM viral video).

After days and nights in the Mojave desert, the construction was complete. But of course just building an car organ, or 'Cargan' was not enough... so they got 80s pop-icon Gary Numan flown in to play his 1979 hit 'Cars'... on cars.

City of Santa Monica: DNA Sequencer

Syyn Labs had the pleasure of installing a new piece at the Santa Monica GLOW Festival this 100-foot-long double helix of colorful, synced lights.

There was over a man-year (more than 2000 combined hours) put into this project which used sophisticated custom software designed which controlled 512 computer controlled full-color LED's, 32 LED controllers, 4 Arduinos, and 4 computers, with over 6000 wire interconnects and well over a mile of wire.

Once operational, it took inputs from the music for beat-matching and/or VU metering, a wireless iPad, and our beautiful 22-button console - sometimes all at once! At the end of the night, the twin-computer-based system had processed and sent 53,477 beats to our tempo-synced light sculpture between 7:30 and 2am.

A roving party bus occupied by 20- and 30-somethings gussied up in tuxedos and gowns is slated to arrive. The game for the evening is to tell inquisitive bar denizens that the party is celebrating the launch of its faux-company, Pet Heads, an organization that provides medical marijuana for pets. But most of the tuxedo clad pack made up of engineers, mad scientists, designers and entrepreneurs might as well be celebrating the launch of their own company, Syyn Labs.
