He said, "Well, until we come out and publicly denounce Pope Paul VI and Humanae Vitae, we're wasting our time." Yeah, the Bishop said that. To my face. On June 17 Fr. A religious sister I knew for years, forty-some years professed in an active order, marginalized because she was faithful to the Church. Still wore her religious habit. Thought it was odd that the only novice they'd had in years was about to be professed, and she wasn't invited. She also thought it odd that the ceremony was to take place on what she thought was the vigil of All Saints Day—midnight, Halloween in other words. She hid in the choir loft. What she saw can't be repeated. It involved witchcraft and lesbianism. She confronted the superior the next day and was told "If you ever say a word, we'll put you in a mental hospital. And it will be your word against ours, and you won't win." She came back from the school she had taught in for thirty years to find her suitcases in the parking lot and the locks changed. Her reward for forty- some years of religious profession. And a good lay woman had to come and take her to live with her. (Apocalypse Now #3 of 4, 1994) ( MP3 ). Like other such sins, both are intimately bound up with intent and circumstances. What may appear objectively to be calumny may not be sinful, if the person who commits it does not believe she is telling a lie; what may be detraction in certain circumstances (when told to someone who has no right to know it) may not be in others (when the person to whom it is told, say, has authority over the person under discussion). One thing I should have said, but didn't, was that SOLT bears at least as much responsibility for his fall as the man himself. They turned him loose for decades with essentially no supervision. To then suddenly crack down was setting him up for a fall. But he had his part, as well. Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel. I feel sure we would all assume that we have no way to know if Fr. Corapi is innocent or guilty. The whole issue is one of deep sadness. It is an issue that impacts all Christians since all churches, in one way or another, do or should discipline their own ministers in some circumstances.

Ehalt, Richard W. Eldred and Darvin E. Winters Jr., have begun a challenging journey. The four men were ordained Saturday at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Indianapolis in a celebration before family, friends and teachers, but Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein didn’t downplay the difficult work that awaits the new priests as he talked about the “awe- some act of faith” they have undertaken. The life of a priest is hard, Archbishop Buechlein said,“not so much because of celibacy, as many think,” he said, but because of the aloneness of being spiritual leaders when the work is tiring and thankless. Priests “must be pure in a world that mocks purity,” he said. “Prayer is the key to happiness in ministry, because it is the key to fidelity,” said Archbishop Buechlein. It “allows the Spirit to lead us so that we are not leading ourselves. “A priest is a witness to mystery and so his identity is divinely rooted in faith,” said the archbishop. “We and our ministry depend entirely on Jesus Christ. “A priest is a servant of communion in the Church and in the charity of Christ,” he said. “We cannot short- circuit it by trying to sidestep the Cross.

I am grateful that our Lord chose you to be our new Bishop, successor to the apostles. Be assured of my prayers for you and your ministry. My name is Bill Watts Jr FMJC and I belong to St. Paul Parish in Allentown. When I first heard about your coming to this Diocese to become our Bishop I followed with interest by the internet, newspaper and other ways. I believe we were blessed by our Holy Father’s wise appointment. At the time I was reading the book “Rise, Let us be on our Way” by our beloved late John Paul II the Great. When I heard that you were the son of a father and no less a mother of convert ministers something leaped up inside my heart. I am reading a copy of your Father, Oliver Barres’, book “One Shepherd One Flock.” In the passage in his diary August 28, 1954 “Come Home.” He was asking himself right before at what cost do I come Home to the Church which his Lord and our Lord founded. The Cross he carried with Jesus was heavy at times like the heaviness I carry with our dear Lord of muscular dystrophy and the effect of this tired some disease, but will lead us to the most glorious Home of all.
