To do the dance, This is not the place, To make the Lord your Savior. To take up space, I pondered a notion so dreadful. It was down to the wire, It was heaven or fire, For those that reside, It was time to make a choice. All puffed up with pride, They threw in the towel, And I knew this would not do. And made Jesus their Pal, I feared for their souls, With the sounds of their praising voice. They had the wrong goals, ‘Twas the things they misconstrue. It tugged at my heart, To see such a start, Such confusion and woe, For this I can only say. With no place to go, I saw the tears, I barely could comprehend. Wash away the fears, What trouble and sorrow, For Jesus saved the day. With no hope for tomorrow, How could they even pretend? I thought to myself, Put pride on the shelf, St. Joseph Church in Inez doubles its capacity to seat 400 people. Mr. Bustillo especially likes the artwork because of the print of purgatory. He said now-a-days people just don’t believe in purgatory. He has been cleaning and repairing the artwork as a labor of love for the past six months. The picture had been kept in a closet for years. Inside the frame were spider webs, dead cockroaches and rat droppings. “It was embarrassing that it was in such bad condition,” Mr. Bustillo said. He sprayed it clean with condensed air and continued cleaning it with warm water, cotton rags and Q-tips. “I really believe it was American made and that it was mass produced,” Mr. Bustillo said. He has experience working with lithographs, as he was a printer 35-40 years ago. As neither Mr. Bustillo nor I knew much more about the piece of art, I knew I’d have to investigate on the Web. While searching on the Internet to find out what this type of artwork is called, I found everything from window blinds to slatted fences and outdoor furniture. Eventually I found a similar piece of artwork on the Internet on the Smithsonian American Artwork Museum Web site at http://americanart.si.edu/collections/ search/artwork/?id=25315. The artwork at this site is created with a combination of three paintings, rather than three prints, and is called a slat or three-in-one or three-way painting. According to the Web site the paintings are of Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, and “a third person who may be the Creek Indian chief Mackintosh, who was deeply implicated in political is- sues of his day.” The paintings were done by an unidentified artist. I learned more about this type of art- work from Alida Pask at the The Catholic Lighthouse Page 14 — April 2011 FAITH & FAMILY
