Nimba's Profile
Nimba’s Profile The Flag of Nimba County: - (Valor, Purity and Fidelity reflected in the stripes) Nimba was part of the central province of Liberia which included Bong and Lofa. It became a full-fledged county in 1964 when President William V.S. Tubman changed the provinces into counties. Nimba became one of the original nine counties of Liberia. Over the years, other sub-divisions have been added making the total of 15 counties. Nimba is located in the North-East Region of the country. The size of Nimba is 4,650 square miles. In his book, Liberia Facing Mount Nimba, Dr. Nya Kwiawon Taryor, Sr. revealed that the name of the county "Nimba", originated from "Nenbaa ton" which means slippery mountain where beautiful young girls slip and fall. Mount Nimba is the highest mountain in Liberia. Nimba is the second largest county in Liberia in terms of population. Before the civil war in 1989, there were over 313,050 people in the county according to the 1984 census. Now Nimba Population has increased to 462,026. Nimba is also one of the richest in Liberia. It has the largest deposit of high grade iron ore. Other natural resources found in Nimba are gold, diamonds, timber, etc. In the late 50's, Nimba's huge iron ore reserve was exploited by LAMCO-the Liberian-American Swedish Mining Company. A considerable portion of Liberia's Gross Domestic Product, GDP, was said to have been generated from revenues from Nimba's iron ore for several years. GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA 2008 NATIONAL POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS: PRELIMINARY RESULTS LIBERIA INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS AND GEO-INFORMATION SERVICES (LISGIS) MONROVIA, LIBERIA JUNE 2008 FOREWORD Post-war socio-economic planning and development of our nation is a pressing concern to my Government and its development partners. Such an onerous undertaking cannot be actualised with scanty, outdated and deficient databases. Realising this limitation, and in accordance with Article 39 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, I approved, on May 31, 2007, “An Act Authorizing the Executive Branch of Government to Conduct the National Census of the Republic of Liberia”. The country currently finds itself at the crossroads of a major rehabilitation and reconstruction. Virtually every aspect of life has become an emergency and in resource allocation, crucial decisions have to be taken in a carefully planned and sequenced manner. The publication of the Preliminary Results of the 2008 National Population and Housing Census and its associated National Sampling Frame (NSF) are a key milestone in our quest towards rebuilding this country. Development planning, using the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS), decentralisation and other government initiatives, will now proceed into charted waters and Government’s scarce resources can be better targeted and utilized to produce expected dividends in priority sectors based on informed judgment. We note that the statistics are not final and that the Final Report of the 2008 Population and Housing Census will require quite sometime to be compiled. In the interim, I recommend that these provisional statistics be used in all development planning for and in the Republic of Liberia. -

BULLETIN 27 July 2012 LIBERIA MARKET PRICE MONITOR A monthly price analysis of food and other essential commodities INTRODUCTION This 27th edition of the Liberia Market Price Monitor1 summarizes the price changes for commonly consumed staple foods as well as other essential non‐food commodities that have potential of being exchanged for food between May and July 2012. The Liberia Market Price Monitor aims to inform stakeholders on the changes in food price over time, at different locations and in different seasons; and on how prices of staples change relative to other local commodities that are key sources of income for vulnerable households. Highlights • Currently, retail prices of the basic staple, rice are substantially higher (22 percent) than the same period in 2011 in most parts of the country, though relatively stable since April 2012; • The refugee hosting county of Grand Gedeh continues to witness huge increases in prices of basic commodities including that of rice that rose up by 6 percent between May and July 2012. Palm oil and gasoline prices were up by 17 and 23 percent higher than the same period of last year. • World rice prices remain firm with a slight drop in July 2012, mainly attributed to good export availability and stable demand, though continued stock uncertainties may lead to global price volatility; • Meanwhile, the cereal market is already signaling the impact of the ongoing drought in USA heightening renewed threats of another round of global rise in food prices; • Casual laborers continue to experience decline in their food purchasing power as a result of the relatively high prices of imported rice with the worst affected county being Grand Gedeh due to double pressure on wage rate by the refugees; • Food security situation of the vulnerable households in parts of southeastern Liberia—mainly Grand Gedeh remains precarious as the region awaits the harvest season in the coming two months. -

Wings Mission Trip to Liberia – January 2020! Africa Africa Liberia Liberia Wings For LIFE International is planning a mission trip to Liberia, Africa in January 2020. We will host prison and community Family Days and trainings in prisons, orphanages, churches, and slums. We will fly into Monrovia and our full itinerary will be posted as soon as it is completed. Raymond Bombo is the Wings For LIFE International – Liberia Executive Director. He has already hosted a Christmas and an Easter Community Family Day. In November he plans to start our educational program, Wings For L.I.F.E. – Life-skills Imparted to Families through Education. We will go and do in-person training not only for him, but his Board of Directors, other leaders in Liberia, and others we meet along our journey. TEAM MEMBERS will need the following: A calling to go to Liberia and help me with this mission. Like to take photos? Lead daily devotions? Be the team “Doctor” or “Nurse”? Team cheerleader? Logistics coordinator? Personal funding to cover the costs of the trip. General good health and personal stamina. A willingness for adventure, new culinary treats, and a desire to meet others who want to help families of prisoners, people behind bars, and the ‘least of these’. I will need to raise funds to help cover my way, and also to pay for costs for Liberian team members, American team members if we raise enough, and supplies for the trip. 1. All donations given to Wings are tax deductible. 2. If more money is raised or donated to Wings than is actually needed by an individual to cover their costs or the whole team’s cost, all money remains with Wings and can’t be returned to the donor.
