Dhiman Chairman FOREWORD Groundwater is the major source of freshwater that caters to the demand of ever growing domestic, agricultural and industrial sectors of the country. This renewable resource is being indiscriminately exploited by several users. On the other hand, rapid urbanization and land use changes has resulted in reduced natural infiltration /recharge of aquifers. This has lead to various problems related to quantity and quality and issues like the decline in water levels, depletion of groundwater resource and quality deterioration. There is thus an imperative need for augmenting the valuable ground water resource. Artificial recharge and roof top rainwater harvesting is one such method that can revive this precious resource. Several traditional and scientifically proven artificial recharge and rainwater harvesting techniques have been adopted in different parts of the country. These structures have proven to be viable option for augmenting the groundwater aquifers by making use of surplus surface runoff. The pioneering efforts by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) have been instrumental in popularizing several cost-effective recharge techniques suitable for different hydrogeological conditions of the country. CGWB has already implemented numerous demonstrative schemes of artificial recharge to ground water across the country. The untiring efforts of the Government organizations, scientific community & NGO’s with people’s active participation have shown remarkable results in reducing the declining trends of the groundwater resources in select pockets of the country. An effort has been made to compile such kind of success stories in this report. The report throws light on the recharge techniques practiced traditionally in different regions of the country. This report would be of immense help to the water managers, NGO’s, local bodies all those who are concerned with recharging of the groundwater resources and monitoring its impact. New Delhi Dr.S.C.Dhiman May, 2011 Chairman, CGWB Preface In the last few decades rapid urbanization coupled with technological development in construction of deep tube wells have contributed to large-scale exploitation of groundwater. This has resulted in lowering of water table so much that many dug wells and tube/bore wells giving previously sufficient yield have decreased now in their yield and ultimately drying up. The situation becomes more precarious during summer. In many parts of the country, ground water development has already reached a critical stage, resulting in acute scarcity of the resource. Artificial recharge is the technique that can revive and sustain development of groundwater. Several traditional and scientifically proven artificial recharge methodologies have been adopted in different regions of the country. Central Ground Water Board has been in the forefront of activities for augmenting ground water resources through scientifically designed artificial recharge structures for harvesting runoff which otherwise runs off into sea. A number of pilot schemes and demonstrative artificial recharge schemes have been implemented by the CGWB in association with various State Government organizations since the 8th plan period. These are aimed at popularizing cost-effective ground water augmentation techniques suitable for various hydrogeological settings, to be replicated by other agencies elsewhere in similar areas. The work done by Central Ground Water Board and other state and non- governmental agencies involved in the water sector have provided the basic inputs necessary for the preparation of this report. The present compilation highlights case studies in artificial recharge and impact of such measures in ameliorating problems related to groundwater. I hope this report will be useful to all agencies engaged in monitoring the impact of the artificial recharge schemes across the country.     Build Your Own Success Story! FOREST OF MADHYA PRADESH As per the report (ISFR) MP has the largest forest cover in the country followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Forest Cover (Area-wise): Madhya Pradesh> Arunachal Pradesh> Chhattisgarh> Odisha> Maharashtra. Forest Cover (Percentage): Mizoram (85.4%)> Arunachal Pradesh (79.63%)> Meghalaya (76.33%) According to India State of Forest Report the recorded forest area of the state is 94,689 sq. km which is 30.72% of its geographical area. According to Indian state of forest Report (ISFR – 2019) the total forest cover in M.P. increased to 77,482.49 sq km which is 25.14% of the states geographical area. The forest area in MP is increased by 68.49 sq km. The first forest policy of Madhya Pradesh was made in 1952 and the second forest policy was made in 2005. Madhya Pradesh has a total of 925 forest villages of which 98 forest villages are deserted or located in national part and sanctuaries. MP is the first state to nationalise 100% of the forests. Among the districts, Balaghat has the densest forest cover, with 53.44 per cent of its area covered by forests. Ujjain (0.59 per cent) has the least forest cover among the districts In terms of forest canopy density classes: Very dense forest covers an area of 6676 sq km (2.17%) of the geograhical area. Moderately dense forest covers an area of 34, 341 sqkm (11.14% of geograhical area). Open forest covers an area of 36, 465 sq km (11.83% of geographical area) Madhya Pradesh has 0.06 sq km.

Large resources are spent on the development of various urban settlements but the condition of these towns continues to deteriorate because of piecemeal nature of expenditure and lack of definitive development schemes. Adhoc efforts neither result in better environment nor strengthen the economic base. In view of this, Town Planning Organisation, Kashmir has undertaken the preparation of the Master Plans for various towns, which envisages all encompassing development of these towns. Master Plans are expected to give impetus to the development and economic potential of the towns. In the first phase, the Master Plans of district headquarters have been taken up which will be followed up by Master Plans of other small and medium towns. The Government has also decided to outsource few Master Plans; however, the Master Plan for Ganderbal, which is on the threshold of becoming Class I town, has been outsourced to M/S Feedback Infra Private Limited, Gurgaon. The Master Plan-Ganderbal (2012-32) is the first planning effort in Kashmir region that has been outsourced to any private consultant by Town Planning Organisation, Kashmir. The studies involved in the preparation of Master Plan for Ganderbal (2012-32) concerns with the areas crucial to planning and development of the region. It has been a great privilege for M/S Feedback Infra Private Limited, Gurgaon to undertake the assignment of formulating the Master Plan of Ganderbal (2012-32).
