He founded what is now called the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Jersey Zoo (now Durrell Wildlife Park) on the Channel Island of Jersey in 1958, but is perhaps best remembered for writing a number of books based on his life as an animal collector and enthusiast. He was the youngest brother of the novelist Lawrence Durrell. Early life and education Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, India on 7 January 1925. He was the fourth surviving and final child of Louisa Florence Dixie and Lawrence Samuel Durrell, both of whom were born in India of English and Irish descent. Durrell's father was a British engineer and as was commonplace and befitting family status, the infant Durrell spent most of his time in the company of an ayah (nursemaid). Durrell reportedly recalled his first visit to a zoo in India and attributed his lifelong love of animals to that encounter. The family moved to England after the death of his father in 1928 and settled in the Upper Norwood - Crystal Palace area of South London.

    TARS Library The main purpose of TARS is 'to celebrate and promote the life and woks of Arthur Ransome', and a big part of that is the Society's own Library, with over 1000 books and other material. There are books written about his life, including the time he spent in Russia, reporting about events during the Revolution, and about his early life and how he came to be a writer in the first place. Ransome was the very first winner of the Carnegie Medal awarded by the Library Association (now CILIP) for an outstanding children's book, with Pigeon Post in 1937. The Medal is still presented every year, and we have every single winning book, right up to the present: almost a unique collection. We also have many other children's books, old and new, as well as the Swallows and Amazons series in several different languages. Arthur Ransome had so many interests and he owned books on all of them, and the Library has books on all of those subjects too – sailing, of course, fishing, natural history, crime novels, books by his favourite authors, such as Robert Louis Stevenson (a complete collection of his works) the Lake District, the Norfolk Broads, and even chess! Summer school had ended, summer ball had wrapped up, we had all come home from camps, and so we packed up the car, threw a well-stocked cooler in the back, and headed off. Any direcon would do—one of the perks of living in the Midwest—and as long as I had a few books, the distance didn’t maer at all. Summer as an adult is never as relaxing as it used to be, or seems like it used to be, but we can all get a lile virtual vacaon in through an audiobook. This month, we have a Classics Corner Spotlight from David Wright, who gives an in-depth look at Gerald Durrell’s Corfu series, the basis for the MASTERPIECE! series The Durrells in Corfu, the final season of which debuts on PBS next month. If the Durrells’ travels aren’t enough for you, keep reading for a Listen-alikes list featuring audios with a well-developed sense of place. But hey, let’s get real. It’s not all sunshine and travel, as Terry Hong so pointedly illustrates in part two of her Last Word series, which features books recorded aer the demise of their authors and is rich with poignant impact.     Gerald Durrell 1 Gerald Durrell Gerald ('Gerry') Malcolm Durrell (* 7. Januar 1925 in Jamshadpur, Indien; † 30. Januar 1995 auf Jersey) war ein britischer autodidaktischer Zoologe und Autor. Er ist der jüngste Bruder des mehrfach für den Literaturnobelpreis vorgeschlagenen Schriftstellers und Diplomaten Lawrence Durrell. Biografie Durrell wurde in Indien geboren, und es wird behauptet, sein erstes verständliches Wort sei "Zoo" gewesen.
