If you dont think you like sea shan- ties, this is the week to come to South Street. New Yorks favorite sea music group will sing every- thing from blues to ballads to Woody Guthrie with not a sea song in sight or sound! June 11, Louis Killen - One of Lou's last American concerts before he moves back to England... for good! Lou sang with Ewan MacColl and with The Clancy Brothers and is universally regarded as one of the greatest living ballad singers. June 18, The NexTradition - Powerful singing from Ken Schatz, best known as a star voice of the Cartoon Network's "Sheep in the Big City", and Alison Kelley of the fabulous Johnson Girls. June 25, Dan Milner & Bob Conroy - Leaders of the Irish-American song revival. Dublin's Sunday Tribune newspaper called their singing "passionate" and Dirty Linen magazine called their songs "fascinating documents." Banjo, guitar and a bit of button box accordion. July 2 - Robbie Wedeen - One of Pinewoods' favorite singing members in a program of maritime songs. Robbie's voice is sweet yet knowing and her guitar accompaniment is just perfect. July 9 - Pat Mangan, a brilliant Irish-American fiddler +OLK OPEN SING; Wednesdays, June 5 & July 3; 7pm Join us on the first Wednesday of each month for an open sing. PRE-MYSTIC +ESTIVAL IRISH CONCERT; Thursday, June 6th; 8 pmJ Warp 4 (Irelands premier chantey group) was formed in the early 1990s by Pat Sheridan from Cork. After several line-up changes the group honored a long time commitment to veteran Irish folk singer Liam Clancy to record two albums with him in time for the Dublin Cutty Sark Tall Ships &estival in the summer of 1999. Warp &our officially split up at the end of 1999, but the members Niall &ennell and Pat Sheridan occasionally met up for a singing session. Now they are back together with a new crew and they are headed for the Mystic (CT) Sea Music &estival. En route they will do this New York Pinewoods Series Concert. - 2 - Details Continued on next page &rom California to Cape Breton, from Glasgow to Galway, and from London to Las Vegas, Athena O Lochlainn is recognized as a true master of the Celtic fiddle. A student of such fiddling luminaries as Aly Bain, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, and Alasdair &rasier, Athena won the Junior National Scottish &iddling Championship three years in a row. She later toured with the Sharon Shannon Band, played fiddle for the Las Vegas production of The Lord of the Dance, and was the featured fiddler in the original Broad- way production of Riverdance. &or this concert, Athena will perform her tunes and songs along with her husband +ionn O Lochlainn. &ionn is an accomplished bass player who has toured or recorded with a diverse array of artists, including Donal Lunny, Billy Bragg, Dan Ar Braz, Jimmy Nail, and Desree. SACRED HARP SINGING; Sunday, June 16st; 2:30pm Co-sponsored and hosted by St. Bartholomews Church in Manhattan, on the 3rd Sun- day of each month through June, 2:30 to 5:30pm, 109 East 50th St. We continue the colonial American tradition of lively (high-volume, up-tempo) four-part, unaccompa- nied gospel singing. Shaped notes, indicating fa-so-la intervals, make sight-reading easy. Instruction provided; beginners welcome! Sacred Harp hymnals available for loan or purchase.
