She considers him to be her “hairy child.” Those of us who have or have had animals, well understand this feeling. Teddy has endeared himself to Nancy’s physical therapy clients and sometimes assists at PT sessions. I encountered IRENE ANDERSON, NANCY KENESS AND EVY MAYER in the cafeteria of the Graduate Center (located in the old B. Altman’s building). So, we all had a nice chat. They were enrolled in an eight-week course about Broadway Musicals at GC/CUNY. Irene told me that she is doing free lance computer consulting work. The Graduate Center seems to draw other Pinewoods people. On another day, I ran into CLARICE KJERUL&&. She’s taking a writing course there. I’m enrolled in the &rench Ph.D. program, so I’m there frequently. ABE and GERT GERSHOWITZ recently moved from Queens to Manhattan. Best of luck in your new place, Abe and Gert. Their great-grandchild, JARED, celebrated his 4th birthday in May. Jared has acquired an expertise in identifying different types of construction trucks. This is not his only talent. Apparently he has inherited Abe’s musical gifts. During Passover, Jared sang four verses of “Dayenu” over the telephone to Abe and Gert. He was in tune! (“Dayenu” is a song that is sung at the Passover seder. The Hebrew word, “dayenu”, means “enough” in English...i.e. “It would have been enough if he had sung one verse.”) Abe and Gert gave their piano to Jared’s family as well as lots of song books. Jared is thrilled; he said, “Not only is the piano important, but all the song books Grandpa sent me are even better!” I am saddened to report the death of MURRAY CARTAN in April. Murray was a long- time member of the club. We will all miss him. The club extends sincere condolences to his wife, Edith and family. If you have news to share, please contact me at 372 Central Park West, #15B, New York, NY 10025; 212-663-6309.

Murray Cartan It is with a heavy and saddened heart that I share the news that Murray Cartan passed away on April 29th. Club members will remember Murray and his dear wife, Edith, from Bernie Klay weekends and many a Pinewoods Winter Weekend. Murray loved to sing harmony and had a wealth of knowledge of folk music. He always had some good words, a story, a remembrance, an anecdote to share with old friends and new acquaintances alike. In these latter years, how often I called him when my computer was acting up. Murray was a maven on the Mac computer and generously gave of his time and expertise to anyone who needed assistance. In the early 1990s, Murray, Manny Krevat and I performed as the trio Aged In The Wood. One of our signature songs was Remember Me. Murray was a dear friend. He touched the hearts of many who knew him. He will be remembered and will live on in our hearts and our thoughts. To borrow a thought from a popular folksong ..... If when we die, we go somewhere, I bet you a dollar he’s a harmonizin’ there. Bernie Stolls May 2002

It is hard to believe that June is here and summer is quickly approaching. This month is packed full with series concerts, sings and sea chanteys. Look for the weekly Sea Music Concerts, with Louis Killen on June 11. We have the Sacred Harp singing, the &olk Open Sing, the Sunnyside and Riverdale Sings, the Traditional Music Open Mike & &olk Music Jam, and the Old Time String Band Get-together. Warp 4 and Athena & &inn O Lochlainn is our series concert at the Advent Lutheran Church. The Church, by the way, is raising money in order to paint their sanctuary (where we hold our concerts). They need to raise $23,500 by the end of July. See their ad on page 21 for the address. Thank you to the volunteers who help to put out the newsletter each month and ensure that you get the word about what’s going on in the club and in events throughout the city. They could always use more help. The May Newsletter again had to be postponed due to a printing delay. Thanks and apologies to: Ruth Block and Al Cadwallader who came to the office and found the mailing had been cancelled and thanks to Isabel Goldstein who went to the office and also made calls to tell people what was up. It was held a few days later at the Wade-Pentel’s: Thanks to volunteers Jerry Epstein, Clarice Kjerulff, Brenda Peña, Eileen Pentel, Don Wade, and Morey Weisman, and to Isabel Goldstein who organized the mailing but could not attend. Won’t you join us and help mail out the next newsletter on Monday, July 1? (See page 3).

30 Years Ago This Month compiled by Harvey Binder Here are some club happenings as reported in the June, 1972 newsletter: -A singing party was held at the home of Sheila Ewall. -The club noted, with sadness, the passing of Reverend Gary Davis, Bob Beers, and Mrs. Abigail Ritchie (mother of Jean). -Seaport series performers in June were to be Jack Langstaff, Bill Vanaver, Evelyne Beers (tentative), Ed Trickett, and Sara Grey. -Seaport Day performers included Ed Trickett, Roberts and Barrand, Michael Cooney, Barbara Carns, Bill Vanaver, and Cliff Haslam. &olk music around town included Jim Kweskin (Washington Square Methodist Church), Michael Cooney (WSMC), Happy and Artie Traum (WSMC), John Townley (&olklore Center), Heather Wood (&C), J. D. Crowe (Max’s Kansas City), Jose &eliciano (Cen- tral Park), Melanie/Janey and Dennis (CP).

Help Wanted Volunteers are needed to staff the club’s booth at the Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival on Saturday and/or Sunday June 15/16. If you can help out by staying in the booth for a while, or bringing the material there or back, please call the volunteer coordinator at (718) 491-4046. All help will be appreciated!

We also need access to an area that we can use 2 evenings a month for our board meetings (20 people) and our newsletter mailings.
