Andover’s Opus R-521 in Greenville illustrates this point. In 1871, E. & G.G. Hook & Hastings began the production of stock-model organs to develop their market for smaller church organs. Their Opus 588, with 2 manuals and 9 ranks, was one of those stock models, matching the drawing and description in their 1871 sales brochure of “Size No. 6 - Price $1,500.” Opus 588 was installed in June of 1871 in the Baptist Church in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. When the Baptists bought a new, larger instru- ment from Hook & Hastings (Opus 2556) in 1928, the company took the old organ in trade. The following year, they installed it in St. Casimir’s Roman Catholic Church in Maynard, Massa- chusetts. To fit under the low gallery ceiling, the gabled gothic arch of the center case section was removed and the tops of the tallest facade pipes were mitered horizontally. St. Casimir’s was closed in 1999 and the building sold in 2003 to a congregation which did not use the organ. They contacted us in early 2016 to ask about selling it.

WELCOME FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, If all goes well, Grace Church will have no need to convene another Organ Replacement Committee for 500 years! The truth is, in the 167 years that we have inhabited this glorious building at 10th and Broadway, six times – if not seven – we have charged a committee to determine the fate of the existing organ. In the 1840’s the question was whether the organ built by the Henry Erben Co. could and should be moved from the old church to the new (it was). In the 1870’s the decision was to add a new instrument built by the Hilborne Roosevelt firm, to be located in a chamber in the south transept near the chancel, and connected to the Erben organ in the west gallery. In 1902 the builder E.M. Skinner replaced the Roosevelt and Erben organs with a new instrument of his own. In 1912 and 1928 Skinner then enlarged and refined his work. By 1961, changing musical tastes and the challenge of maintenance triggered the decision to replace Skinner’s enormous instrument with an organ built along classical lines.

    Lake Delaware Alumni Association, Inc. Winter 2015 CHARLES DODSLEY WALKER: In Memoriam It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of Capt. Charles Dodsley Walker, Organist Emeritus of LDBC. Charlie was 94. He served as camp organist from 1940 through 1990—though up until a couple of years ago he would appear on Grads Weekend to play. While there were some breaks in that service, they were for a good cause: to serve in the U.S. Navy in World War II and for a few years after the war when he was organist at the American Cathedral in Paris. Charlie was born in Glen Ridge, NJ and, ultimately, at- tended or served more Episcopal or musical institutions than is imaginable: Trinity School (NYC), Cathe- dral Choir School at St. John the Divine, Trinity College (Hartford), Kew Forest School (where he taught the young Donald Trump!) American Cathedral (Paris), St. Thomas Chapel (now All Saints Church, Kips Bay, NYC), Berkshire Choral Institute (director), Blue Hill Troupe (a Gilbert & Sullivan group, director), Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music, Manhattan School of Music, Canterbury Choral Soci- ety (founder), Church of the Heavenly Rest (38 years as organist) Trinity Church (20 years as organist, Southport, CT), St. Luke’s Parish (Darien, CT). His association with Camp was the longest of them all. In 1937, Charlie was approached by Channing Lefebvre (organist at Trinity Church, Wall Street) about becom- ing the camp organist. He was interviewed at the old camp clubhouse on 109th St. His age, 17, proved an impediment and he was told to reapply when he turned 20.

    1. Not found. 2. Nothing is known of Engelman. On 20 February, Bliss wrote to Edison, "Engelmann writes that he has his press in operation and that it is doing satisfactory work. Meanwhile I am without a fast press and no information at hand when I shall be in shape to offer one. How does the rotary press come on and what can I expect or promise." The next month, Bliss reported to Edison "I saw Engelmann's press in Phila. He has a level bed and the frame which holds the stencil moves back & forth under three rollers arranged with springs to vary pressure." The press worked by steam or foot power and could produce about 1,200 copies an hour. "I hope you will crowd that rotary press along.
