6. Scientific Activities Α. Research interests My research interests fall in the area of Data managements and mining with a focus on the extraction and management of knowledge from the web and social media. I continuously monitor the evolution of research and the new opportunities and challenges that rise in the field. Text mining A large part of my research the last five years has been dedicated in the use of semantic information in text mining tasks, such as text clustering and classification, word sense disambiguation, sentence and word extraction from text. A major outcome of this research is the definition of a text relatedness measure, which uses the knowledge of a popular linguistic resource (WordNet) [J5]. This research has also led in the implementation of an online service (Omiotis) for text relatedness [C26], which has been used by other researchers and in many of my publications [C2, C6, C11, C16, C18, C20, C22]. There is also work in progress from myself, my colleagues and my students in extending the online service with additional capabilities: a) a word sense disambiguation process that takes into account the context of a word and aims in maximizing the semantic similarity of senses in a sentences and b) a sentiment analysis service that will incorporate the WSD step and sentiment information from another linguistic resource (SentiWordnet). Recently, we have applied the semantic relatedness measure to text classification tasks by embedding it either into a semantic kernel [C11] or in a temporal classifier for biomedical texts [C1, C5].

Graph mining My research activity on the field of knowledge extraction from graphs is bifold: a) the analysis of social networks with graph mining techniques in order to locate content (nodes, edges, or groups of them) of interest, b) the representation of text as graph (in sentence, document of collection level) and the definition of novel similarity metrics and indexing techniques. The progress so far in the use of graph mining in social networks has been depicted in publications, which propose graph analysis models for the propagation of trust in social networks and the identification of trusted individuals [BC1, C17], node rating techniques that aim to reveal important nodes in the graph 5/16

[BC6] and applications of graph compression techniques from the field of biology to graphs from other domains which aim to discover cliques, edges or nodes of special interest [J2, C9, C12]. A major novelty that is common in all these works is the use of time information that is attached on the edges of the graph, which results in a time-sensitive analysis of the graph. Progress in the second field -the use of graphs for text representation- has been depicted in publications [J5, J8, C2, C6, C16, C19, C20, C34] and helped us to establish semantic relatedness as a basic step in text mining and information retrieval tasks. Especially, the recent work in semantic document indexing [C2] is a first step towards building a semantic search engine for texts, which will rely on semantic relatedness and not on exact keyword matching.

Other interests A part of my research work concerns the study of virtual communities and social media and the issues that arise from their application in education [B1, C7,C8, C10, C24, C25] and healthcare [BC3, BC5, BC7, BC8, J1, J4, J6, C30, C35]. The inspiration for these works came from my collaboration with the MSc Programm in Virtual Communities held by Panteion University, in terms of the course “Organization and management of Virtual Communities", which was summarized in book chapter [BC10]. Another interest concerns the application of Web 2.0 technologies and knowledge management tools and techniques to the news industry. The news industry is a major provider of textual and web content and provides a prosperous field for data mining and knowledge management. The exploitation of Web 2.0 tools in various ways [BC5, J1, J9, J12, C3, C14, C27, C28, C31, C32] and the applications in news content resulted in publications [BC2, C23]. In this framework, in publications [J7, C33] we proposed an association rule mining technique that exploits the hierarchical structure of news articles.
