Observed versus Expected Match- Running Outputs of International Female Rugby Sevens Players A thesis submitted to Massey University, Albany, New Zealand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Sport and Exercise Kirsty Yallop 2018 Primary Supervisor: Associate Professor Andrew Foskett Co-Supervisor: Associate Professor Ajmol Ali 1 Abstract Women’s rugby sevens is a new and emerging sport with limited knowledge, specifically on international female match-running outputs. It is a rare opportunity to conduct research on elite athletes, and even more so for an emerging women’s sport. The overall aim of this thesis is to establish and compare observed international female rugby sevens players’ match-running outputs versus theoretical expected match-running outputs (elite male players and an established sport, football). Another unknown aspect of the women’s rugby sevens game is how fatigue affects performance. The thesis also determines differences in match-running outputs of international female rugby sevens players from half-to-half, game-to-game and tournament-to-tournament. Global Positioning System (GPS) units worn on the players’ backs were used to collect data from 18 female rugby sevens players across 15 matches and 19 female football players across four matches. Reasons for the gaps found in match-running outputs and aspects that could be improved for optimal elite performance in female rugby sevens were explored.

There are also limited researches on this topic. However, tourism, as a new form of leisure activity, changed people’s living styles and contributed to the economy too tremen- dously to be ignored by the sociologists. This project studied tour- ists’ behaviour and perception towards Hong Kong Sevens, an inter- nationally renowned and successful sports event in Hong Kong. The- ories on tourist gaze by Urry & Larson were examined in the context of Hong Kong Sevens. What the gazes overseas and local spectators were, as well as a conjecture where the gazes are formulated, were discussed. 1 Acknowledgement I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Mr Robbie McRobbie of Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) and all his colleagues in HKRFU for offering me the op- portunity and supports to make this research project possible.

THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT. VICTORIA FOLAYAN - WOMEN’S RUGBY Victoria Folayan had an incredible performance at the Dubai Rugby 7s tournament in December, which earned her selection to the Dream Team. Folayan helped the Eagles to a seventh place finish at the tournament and scored seven tries in the Eagles’ first three matches of the tournament, including three tries against China in the Eagles’ record-setting performance. The 61-0 victory over China was the largest margin of victory in tournament history. Folayan, originally a native of Boston, Mass., was introduced to rugby at her orientation day at Stanford University. “At my welcome weekend at Stanford, there were a bunch of girls playing rugby in a field on campus and at the time I had no idea what the sport was,” Folayan said. “I was like, ‘what is this?’ It was clear that I was interested, but I was too shy to actually say anything. They asked me if I wanted to play and then they threw me the ball and yelled, ‘run!’ I guess the rest is history.” Folayan has high praise for the rugby community and how welcoming they were to her when she first started playing Victoria Folayan charges down the pitch en route to one of her two tries the sport. “Even from the first time I played that weekend, against New Zealand at the Dubai 7s tournament in December 2014. they accepted me right then and there and after that admin Photo credit: Michael Lee / KLC Fotos weekend I really decided I wanted to play this sport,” Folayan said.

  • Hsbc World Rugby Sevens Series Report 2015-16
HSBC WORLD RUGBY SEVENS SERIES REPORT 2015-16 By common consent this was by far the biggest year for rugby sevens since the sport was created all those years ago in Melrose, Scotland. With the teams and unions, players, referees, organisers, broadcasters, partners and world rugby staff all anticipating the sport’s inclusion in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games no stone was left unturned in preparation, and an expanded series also visited new iconic global destinations. In the men’s series Cape Town, Sydney, Vancouver, Singapore and Paris all provided fascinating new venues joining Dubai, Wellington, Las Vegas, Hong Kong and London, while in the women’s Clermont-Ferrand became the final stop after rounds in Dubai, Sao Paulo, Atlanta and Langford. These exciting new venues joined the series at the beginning of a ground- breaking new hosting cycle which also heralded the bold re-branding of the series, in line with the earlier shift from IRB to World Rugby. This report covers all aspects of the 2015-16 HSBC World Rugby Sevens series for both men and women with recaps of the 15 breath-taking tournaments. It provides insight into every facet of a sophisticated operation calling on a wide variety of expertise within World Rugby, its appointed operation third parties, its hosting partners, its commercial partners and sponsors and the participating Unions. The report will also provide information on game analysis trends, match official selection and player welfare measures to the worldwide coverage via broadcast, PR, digital and social media and appraisal and testimony from the series’ title sponsor and worldwide partners.

Sevens in Olympics: a Prehistory of Women's Sevens http://www.emilito.org/rugby/olympicsandme/index.html Boys and Girls Together: A Prehistory of International Women’s Sevens and how it may have led to rugby in the Olympics my perspective Emil Signes: November 27, 2012 (latest rev: July 2, 2013) home / Rugby home ALEX GOFF RUGBY MAGAZINE ARTICLE IN RED MY COMMENTS IN AQUA Background: Alex Goff's 2009 article in Rugby Alex Goff published a Rugby Magazine article back in October 2009, "Why Should we Thank This Man for Rugby Getting in the Olympics," in which he stated “Rugby would not be an Olympic sport without the women, and women would not have an international 7s presence were it not for one man – Emil Signes.” I’m honored and humbled by that statement and don’t know if it’s true, but I would like to at least document, as much as I can, everything I said to Alex that was reprinted in the article. And more. Document where I can, that is; some of these comments are based only on my notes at the time they happened. Sadly, Alex's article is no longer "up" anywhere on the web; I have, however, saved it on my computer, and the text is included below. The entire topic of rugby and the Olympics is obviously bigger than one person. From what I've done, heard and read, however, the steps that were taken in the development of women's sevens in the USA in the 1980s and in the initiation of international women's sevens in the 1990s, were at least partly based on my efforts, and it's nice to watch it all develop.
