Hsbc World Rugby Sevens Series Report 2015-16 HSBC WORLD RUGBY SEVENS SERIES REPORT 2015-16 By common consent this was by far the biggest year for rugby sevens since the sport was created all those years ago in Melrose, Scotland. With the teams and unions, players, referees, organisers, broadcasters, partners and world rugby staff all anticipating the sport’s inclusion in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games no stone was left unturned in preparation, and an expanded series also visited new iconic global destinations. In the men’s series Cape Town, Sydney, Vancouver, Singapore and Paris all provided fascinating new venues joining Dubai, Wellington, Las Vegas, Hong Kong and London, while in the women’s Clermont-Ferrand became the final stop after rounds in Dubai, Sao Paulo, Atlanta and Langford. These exciting new venues joined the series at the beginning of a ground- breaking new hosting cycle which also heralded the bold re-branding of the series, in line with the earlier shift from IRB to World Rugby. This report covers all aspects of the 2015-16 HSBC World Rugby Sevens series for both men and women with recaps of the 15 breath-taking tournaments. It provides insight into every facet of a sophisticated operation calling on a wide variety of expertise within World Rugby, its appointed operation third parties, its hosting partners, its commercial partners and sponsors and the participating Unions. The report will also provide information on game analysis trends, match official selection and player welfare measures to the worldwide coverage via broadcast, PR, digital and social media and appraisal and testimony from the series’ title sponsor and worldwide partners. In the to Dubai first three matches Fiji and returning core team Ireland left onlookers amazed as they beat Canada and USA before Russia scored the biggest upset of the lot against reigning series champions New Zealand. Australia crown progressed serenely through and their quarter-final win over New Zealand was a sure sign of things to come as they would go on to take the first Cup of the season, beating surprise package Russia 31–12 in the final. RANKINGS MagIC MOMENT 1 Australia You could single out any one of 2 Russia 3 England Fijiana’s remarkable tries, but Ellia 4 France Green’s flying sprint down the line to 5 New Zealand 6 Canada score in the final set the scene for a 7 Fiji season of Australian dominance. 8 Spain 9 Japan 10 Brazil 11 USA 12 Ireland What THEY SAID “That was an epic final and to play in front of such a crowd in Dubai was absolutely sensational. We’ve put a lot of hard work into pre-season and I was really proud of our performance. I’m looking forward to the next round (in Brazil) and then onwards towards Rio.” Australia’s Shannon Parry 10 HSBC WORLD RUGBY SEVENS SERIES REPORT 2015 – 16 11 ROUND 2 Australia Arena Barueri, Sao Paulo TWO from 20 – 21 February, 2016 By the end of the weekend Australia’s women would sit with a maximum TWO IN 40 points in the series, 12 clear of New Zealand and Canada tied for second, and in truth they looked a class apart in Sao Paulo. They also handled the soaking wet conditions in the final with aplomb to see off a very impressive Canada. While New Zealand laboured a little, USA and SAO Paulo France both impressed and Brazil too, making the Cup quarter-finals to the delight of the generous home support less than six months out from Rio 2016. RANKINGS MagIC MOMENT 1 Australia You might choose the regular 2 Canada 3 New Zealand sight of Ellia Green streaking away 4 USA for an imperious Australia, or the 5 France 6 Fiji champions diving into a soaking 7 England wet pitch after their 29-0 final win 8 Brazil 9 Russia against Canada, but before that 10 Japan Canada captain Jen Kish scored a 11 Spain wonderful solo effort to get them 12 Ireland over the line in the semi-final against New Zealand.

Observed versus Expected Match- Running Outputs of International Female Rugby Sevens Players A thesis submitted to Massey University, Albany, New Zealand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Sport and Exercise Kirsty Yallop 2018 Primary Supervisor: Associate Professor Andrew Foskett Co-Supervisor: Associate Professor Ajmol Ali 1 Abstract Women’s rugby sevens is a new and emerging sport with limited knowledge, specifically on international female match-running outputs. It is a rare opportunity to conduct research on elite athletes, and even more so for an emerging women’s sport. The overall aim of this thesis is to establish and compare observed international female rugby sevens players’ match-running outputs versus theoretical expected match-running outputs (elite male players and an established sport, football). Another unknown aspect of the women’s rugby sevens game is how fatigue affects performance. The thesis also determines differences in match-running outputs of international female rugby sevens players from half-to-half, game-to-game and tournament-to-tournament. Global Positioning System (GPS) units worn on the players’ backs were used to collect data from 18 female rugby sevens players across 15 matches and 19 female football players across four matches. Reasons for the gaps found in match-running outputs and aspects that could be improved for optimal elite performance in female rugby sevens were explored.

The NatWest Series 2001 CONTENTS Saturday23June 2 Match review – Australia v England 6 Regulations, umpires & 2002 fixtures 3&4 Final preview – Australia v Pakistan 7 2000 NatWest Series results & One day Final act of a 5 2001 fixtures, results & averages records thrilling series AUSTRALIA and Pakistan are both in superb form as they prepare to bring the curtain down on an eventful tournament having both won their last group games. Pakistan claimed the honours in the dress rehearsal for the final with a memo- rable victory over the world champions in a dramatic day/night encounter at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. The game lived up to its billing right from the onset as Saeed Anwar and Saleem Elahi tore into the Australia attack. Elahi was in particularly impressive form, blast- ing 79 from 91 balls as Pakistan plundered 290 from their 50 overs. But, never wanting to be outdone, the Australians responded in fine style with Adam Gilchrist attacking the Pakistan bowling with equal relish. The wicketkeep- er sensationally raced to his 20th one-day international half-century in just 29 balls on his way to a quick-fire 70. Once Saqlain Mushtaq had ended his 44-ball knock however, skipper Waqar Younis stepped up to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The pace star is bowling as well as he has done in years as his side come to the end of their tour of England and his figures of six for 59 fully deserved the man of the match award and to take his side to victory.

We had 5 teams make the finals and we collected and retained plenty of silverware along the way. We are now holders of the Roden Cutler Shield which we will defend at our first home game next season, we also retained the Bayfield Cup and the Noddy Sawtell Cup in 2016. We had various players achieve higher honours across all forms of our game and age groups. The highlight was seeing Ellia Green and Chloe Dalton receiving gold at the Olympics and throwing the “W” on the podium causing social media to melt down with a public acknowledgement of Warringah Rugby Club (WRC). We deepened our relationships with Sponsors this year and we continue to improve on how we engage our partners to deliver mutual benefit. Our community support grows and this aligned with our commitment to support our local charities raising $30,000 for Mums for Mums, Cerebral Palsy Alliance and White Ribbon. Our investment in the Rays continues to be a success with a huge improvement in performance on the field and the continued fantastic commercial support of Macquarie University.
