    “Marshal towers” in South-West Wales: Innovation, Emulation and Mimicry “Marshal towers” in South-West Wales: Innovation, Emulation and Mimicry John Wiles THE CASTLE STUDIES GROUP JOURNAL NO 27: 2013-14 181 “Marshal towers” in South-West Wales: Innovation, Emulation and Mimicry Historical context Earl William the Marshal (d. 1219) was the very flower of knighthood and England’s mightiest vassal.4 He had married the de Clare heiress in 1189 gaining vast estates that included Netherwent, with Chepstow and Usk castles, as well as the great Irish lordship of Leinster. He was granted Pembroke and the earldom that went with it at King John’s acces- sion in 1199, probably gaining possession on his first visit to his Irish lands in 1200/01.5 Although effec- tively exiled or retired to Ireland between 1207 and 1211 (Crouch, 2002, 101-115), the Marshal consoli- dated and expanded his position in south-west Wales, acquiring Cilgerran by conquest (1204) and Haver- fordwest by grant (1213), as well as gaining custody of Cardigan, Carmarthen and Gower (1214). In 1215, however, whilst the Marshal, soon to be regent, was taken up with the wars in England, a winter campaign led by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth of Gwynedd ushered in a Welsh resurgence, so that at the Marshal’s death all save the Pembroke lordship, with Haverfordwest, had been lost. Llywelyn, who had been granted cus- tody of Cardigan and Carmarthen in 1218, returned to devastate the region in 1220, again destroying many of its castles.6 Fig 1. Master of Science (History), May, 1991, 133 pp., bibliography, 81 titles. Owen Glendower led the last military struggle of the Welsh against the English crown for Welsh independence and nationalism. The failure of the Glendower rebellion established the supremacy of English rule over Wales. For six hundred years the status of Wales as a principality of the crown has not been seriously challenged. This paper will show how widespread the idea of "Welshness" was in 1400 and how much support existed for Wales as an independent nation. Welshmen sought to move from the status of a medieval, tribal principality to a position of an independent nation capable and ready to stand with other national in the world. The role of leadership that Owen Glendower assumed in the final rebellion against the English king, Henry IV, lifted him from a popular Welsh prince to an historical legend. Signature: ……………………………………………………………………………… Abstract Medieval castle slighting is the phenomenon in which a high-status fortification is demolished in a time of conflict. At its heart are issues about symbolism, the role of castles in medieval society, and the politics of power. Although examples can be found throughout the Middle Ages (1066–1500) in England, Wales and Scotland there has been no systematic study of the archaeology of castle slighting. Understanding castle slighting enhances our view of medieval society and how it responded to power struggles. This study interrogates the archaeological record to establish the nature of castle slighting: establishing how prevalent it was chronologically and geographically; which parts of castles were most likely to be slighted and why this is significant; the effects on the immediate landscape; and the wider role of destruction in medieval society. The contribution of archaeology is especially important as contemporary records give little information about this phenomenon. Using information recovered from excavation and survey allows this thesis to challenge existing narratives about slighting, especially with reference to the civil war between Stephen and Matilda (1139–1154) and the view that slighting was primarily to prevent an enemy from using a fortification.

Third, you will find enclosed a Bankers Order Form, which you may prefer to use rather than send a cheque each year. Use of these forms will certainly help in cutting down the paperwork for your Secretary. If you have not yet renewed your subscription from April 1988, please do so very soon. While numerous comments have been received about the usefulness of the Newsletter it will not develop its full potential unless members send items for publication. The first two issues have been very "business" orientated in their content. Please remember to send local/regional/national/ international news which you think might be of interest, together with dates and venues of meetings or courses (adult education tutors please note!) which members might wish to attend.

    CASTLE STUDIES GROUP Newsletter Number 5 Autumn 199 J Dear Member The Group continues with its rather informal management, and this fifth issue of the Newsletter comes to you again from Exeter. But there have been two important changes. At the 1991 AGM Mr. Anthony Burt was elected treasurer, and we look forward to the benefit of his considerable expertise in financial matters. Second, Dr. Lawrence Butler retired from the committee, having served from its creation. We are grateful to him for all his efforts, especially the excellent conference which he organized at Leeds in 1988. He is replaced by Mr. Andrew Saunders, who, despite not having previously beena committee member has always been one of CSG's most active participants.
