A critical and fundamental component of education is reading. It is the gateway to learning. Not only is reading important for your education, but it can also provide hours of enjoyment and fun! Starting on Thursday, March 28, 2019 and going through Monday, August 25, 2019, youth (ages 4-18) can read their way to a Pirates home game at PNC Park! All you have to do is read one book per week! Select a grade-level book*, and once you finish it, complete the Pirates Tales Entry Form, and submit it to your local librarian or online atcarnegielibrary.org/piratestales. As you read more books, you will progress around the bases, with the ultimate goal of hitting a Grand Slam! Encourage your fam- ily, friends, and neighbors to read as much as they can, too. Pittsburgh Baseball Lesson
Sept. 2, 2001--- PITTSBURGH, Pa.--The national pastime is blessed with many beautiful new baseball stadiums, but none fit into the pastiche of community as well as PNC Park at North Shore in downtown Pittsburgh. The ballpark is muscled between a regentrified warehouse district and the Allegheny River, an appropriate location for a working-class town where five o'clock shadows are 24/7. It's like having a shot glass next to a beer. The Roberto Clemente Bridge rainbows the river. The former Sixth Street bridge was renamed in honor of one of the Pittsburgh Pirates' most beloved players. Clemente perished in a Dec. 31, 1972, plane crash while leading the Puerto Rican relief effort for earthquake-torn Nicaragua. He was 38. Sometimes Clemente would complain about his aches and pains. I can still see him twitching his neck while going to work in a bitter September wind. But he always got the job done with passion and pride. That's Pittsburgh. The Clemente bridge is closed to vehicles during game days, allowing pedestrians to approach the park with anticipation in each step--just as Clemente used to come to the plate against the Cubs. The right-field wall at PNC is known as "The Clemente Wall." It is exactly 21 feet high in honor of the right fielder's uniform number. One of the best places to watch the game is from the cheapest seat, a $9 ticket in the 300 section of the right field upper deck grandstands. This presents a glorious view of bridges, the north downtown skyline and the ballpark's "toothbrush" light standards.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club Is Threatening Legal Action Over The
January 10, 2017 Policy Brief: Volume 17, Number 2 Pirates Threaten Legal Action Summary: The Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club is threatening legal action over the Sports and Exhibition Authority’s reluctance to grant the team’s request for ballpark repairs and upgrades. The dispute centers around a video scoreboard which the Authority claims is an improvement and falls outside the stipulations of the lease. Given that the taxpayers have largely paid for the stadium from which the team earns millions, the team should fund desired “improvements”. While spring training is a ways off yet, the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club is playing hardball with the City-County Sports and Exhibition Authority (SEA) over repairs at PNC Park. The Pirates are asking the SEA to pay for capital upgrades to the ballpark which opened in 2001. The requested upgrades include repairs to seats, new carpeting for suites, painting, and new field lighting. In response, the SEA says it needs to explore whether or not it’s obligated to do so under its lease. Legal action is being threatened by the team. Presumably the lease details will determine what happens. PNC Park was built for $216 million and funded mostly with taxpayer money. Required annual base rent paid by the Pirates for leasing the Park is set at $100,000 per year until 2030. The team is also required to pay “excess gate” rent as well as “excess concession revenue”, each based on a percentage of benchmarks achieved by the team or its concessionaires. The lease also stipulates that the team consents to adding a ticket surcharge to the price of admission.

Executive Summary Under the direction of Chairman of the Board Bob Nutting, the Pittsburgh Pirates organization's mission is to strive for excellence in every aspect of the organization, including the way the organization interacts with the community, its business partners and its fans. In the 2017 season, our attendance ranked 25th out of 30 for the entire MLB. We drew 1.9 million people to the ballpark, which is approximately 23,700 a game. The Pirates finished the season with a 75-87 record, fourth in the NL Central. This past offseason saw the trading of two of the franchise’s biggest names, Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen. These trades were not well-received by fans, who believed that the ownership did not value winning. This season, we need to come up with a plan to increase attendance and regain our fan’s loyalty. Our goal is to increase attendance by 5%. In order to do so, we will need to be innovative in our sales efforts. Pittsburgh is a smaller market, so we must target local fans and visitors to sell single game tickets. We will also target area groups in an effort to sell more group tickets. We also need to come up with more benefits to attract and retain season ticket holders. Part of our mission is to create a fun environment for fans.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES TEAM HISTORY ORGANIZATION Forbes Field, Opening Day 1909 The fortunes of the Pirates turned in 1900 when the National 2019 PIRATES 2019 THE EARLY YEARS League reduced its membership from 12 to eight teams.
