THE MORAY BURIAL GROUND RESEARCH GROUP Newsletter Issue 5 - - - September 2005 (Currently published twice a year) Dear Member, Since the last Newsletter came out in April, our Group has been extremely active in a multiplicity of ways, and from the interesting and varied selection of Members' submissions to this Issue, you will undoubtedly be aware of the significant advances in achieving the aims we have so far set ourselves. Obituary - (Dr John Bruce Irving, FSA Scot - Honorary President) Very shortly after being elected as our first Honorary President, at the beginning of March, Dr Irving became seriously ill and was therefore unable to give any further encouragement or support to the Group. Sadly Bruce did not recover, and he passed away at Bonshaw on the 8th of June. We know that had he survived, he would indeed have been instrumental in ensuring that our activities relating to Burial Sites in Moray expanded in line with our various aims. The MBGRG was indeed considerably honoured to have someone like Bruce as our Hon. President, and we extend our sincere sympathy to Mrs Irving and the family. New Members From the time of the previous Newsletter, we have acquired seven new full members who have joined us from Aberdeen, Botriphnie, Dufftown, Drummuir, Miltonduff and Urquhart. We hope that you have found membership beneficial and we greatly appreciate all the support you have given the Group. Thanks to the efforts of several people, we now have a total of 12 Associate members. London cK 1896 \v PREFACE I HE object of this work is to describe all the old customs which still linger on in the obscure nooks and corners of our native land, or which have survived the march of progress in our busy city's life. There are many books which treat of ancient customs, and repeat again the stories told by Brand, Hone, and other historians and as far antiquaries ; but, as we are aware, there is no book describing the actual folk-customs yet extant, which may be witnessed to-day by the folk-lorist and lover of rural manners. We have endeavoured to supply this want, and to record only those customs which time has spared. Undoubtedly the decay has been rapid. Many customs have vanished, quietly dying out without giving a sign. The present generation has witnessed the extinc- tion of many observances which our fathers practised and revered, and doubtless the v 286064 Preface progress of decay will continue. We have entered upon a diminished inheritance. Still it is surprising to find how much has been left how the race ; tenaciously English clings to that which habit and usage have estab- lished how ancient customs hold in ; sway the palace, the parliament, the army, the law courts, amongst educated people as well as unlearned rustics cluster ; how they around our social institutions, are enshrined in reli- and are law gious ceremonial, preserved by ; how carefully they have been guarded through the many ages of their existence, and how deeply rooted they are in the affections of the English people. -

1 There was a well-known news report from the BBC in the 1960s. A roadway was being built in Ireland. People who lived nearby were upset because the road would go a bush that had long been claimed by the fairies. And the reporter does the whole thing with a straight face, but he clearly thinks this is fascinating and absurd. At one point, he asks a woman: Have you seen a fairy yourself? No I didn’t but my mother did so, she’s a woman 80 years of age, tells us she was working in this house and her master was an invalid, she saw little body up the road dressed in red. She hid behind a door. She was frightened by it. That was 50 years ago. In 2017, a member of Irish parliament named Danny Healy-Rae told the Irish Times that continual problems on the roads in County Kerry were due to the fact that the roads went through fairy forts. He was widely mocked but in his defense, he said, quote “if someone told me to go out and knock a fairy fort or touch it, I would starve first.” Eddie Lenihan is a professional storyteller who lives on the West coast of Ireland. I reached him at his home. As you’ll hear we did not have a great connection but you can still make out what he’s saying. Eddie has dedicated his life to collecting fairy stories and beliefs because he’s worried that they’re dying out. EDDIE: And I will say due to America. -

Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Priscilla Wald Matthew Taylor Pamela Cooper Aarthi Vadde Patrick O’Neill © 2020 Moira Marquis ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Moira Marquis: The Dialectic of Myth (Under the direction of Priscilla Wald and Matthew Taylor) This dissertation interrogates the ecological purposes behind representations of indigenous and traditional myths in contemporary Anglophone novels, specifically David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas (2004), Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy (2004-2014), Nnedi Okorafor’s Lagoon (2014), Alexis Wright’s Carpentaria (2010) and Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (2006). These novels, I contend, use myths to argue that climate change is not an inevitable result of human nature but rather the product of one cultural story — what I call the Enlightenment myth — which asserts humanity’s need to dominate nature. Conversely, the Yorùbá, Waanyi Aboriginal, Celtic and new age science/spiritualist myths depicted in these novels understand humanity as incapable of mastering nature without dire consequences for both the world and ourselves. Challenging the longstanding—and frequently racist— dichotomy between civilized science and irrelevant or mystifying folk belief, my project illustrates how myths are increasingly employed as a rhetorical tool to foster ideas of human interdependence with nature. My work challenges the definition of myth as “false supposition” and instead asserts myths are always cultural stories whose merit should not be measured through claims of objectivity but rather by the cultural practices they manifest. -

University of British Columbia, 1996 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Children's Literature) The University of British Columbia (Vancouver) June 2008 © Caralyn Andersen 2008 Abstract There are many examples of novel-length renditions of traditional fairy tales to be found in young adult fantasy literature. Although there is a significant amount of research on the evolution of the fairy tale into novel length narratives, there is little focused on the use of the folklore of Faerie in fantasy novels. This thesis examines the Faerie-related folkloric themes and motifs to be found in four examples of contemporary young adult fantasy novels: An Earthly Knight, Thomas the Rhymer, Tithe, and The Hunter's Moon. Each of these narratives is rich in Faerie folklore. The authors, Janet McNaughton, Ellen Kushner, Holly Black, and O.R. Melling, have gone beyond the pop-culture image of the fairy and explored the many aspects of Faerie to be found in folklore. In their unique ways, these authors each explore Faerie as a realm full of marvels and contradictions, while remaining true to the nature of Faerie found in folklore. This thesis differs in that it examines two aspects that are occasionally touched upon, and which are inextricably linked, but rarely considered in detail: namely the system of transport and trade. Due to the paucity of surviving evidence the study covers a time span of some three hundred years from the reign of Henry I (1100) to the Glyndwr rebellion (1400). It charts the development of trade in an age that saw great political changes leading to the construction of planned towns and, in some places, villages, as well as complex fortifications and the introduction of Latin monasticism. The thesis examines the respective roles of the key influences on transport and trading activity, namely: (i) the players, be they the marcher lords and the Crown, the monasteries, and the merchants and traders themselves; (ii) the places such as towns and villages, ports and landing places; and (iii) the processes that influenced trade including the linkages between settlements - with particular attention to the medieval road system - and markets and fairs. A model is advanced which describes how initially autonomous open country settlements and farmsteads were integrated into a regional network, within and between lordships, as rural commodity producers and consumers grew increasingly dependent on the retail goods and services found in the market towns. -
