2018 in Review
2018 in Review By: Sajal Shukla 2018 was a very influential year in the world. There were many bad and good events that took place, but they all contributed to a very unique year. As the year 2018 has come to an end, let’s take a look at some of the major events that happened this year. One of the first major events that happened in 2018 were the winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Ninety-six coun- tries came together to compete in various winter sports such as ski- ing, curling, figure skating, and ice hockey. One of our very own alumni, Kendall Coyne, competed with the U.S. women’s ice hockey team, which one gold at the competition. Overall, the U.S. won nine gold, eight silver, and six bronze metals. Another event that took place this year was the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people died in the shooting, making it the largest school shooting in U.S. history. Though this event was catastrophic, it brought up important discussions about gun control in the United States. It also brought people together to mourn the loss of those seventeen lives and to see how we can bring about positive change in the world. Something else that happened this year was the royal wedding that took place in England. Meghan Markle made his- tory as the first divorced, biracial American woman to marry someone in the royal family. The marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was a beautiful moment people all over the world were able to celebrate. -

My mother, willing to read Raptor Red in a week, provided a creative backbone to my dinosaur curriculum. The phenomenal English teachers at White Hill Middle School patiently listened to my plans to incorporate science fiction into a science classroom and helped me figure out ‘how to teach literature.’ Tina, the librarian, supported me through the process and helped me obtain 80 copies of Raptor Red. When writing such a complex paper, I quickly realized how important it is to have literate friends. This includes Andy, who once said, “You’re a great writer,” then proceeded to butcher what I had just written. The times I spent in Montana were the most fun experiences of my life. This kept me going when I wanted to give up. Thank you to all of the wild and crazy fellow students of this program who helped keep me motivated throughout the process. This paper was completed due to the motivation that returning to Bozeman required me to finish it. -

The paper will explore the history of dinosaur discoveries, their display methodologies in museums, and how pop culture, including movies and video games, have influenced museum displays and public perception over time. The lack of updated dinosaur exhibits in smaller local museums leads to disbelief, or an outright denial, of new information such as feathered dinosaurs. Entertainment, such as movies and video games that have non-avian dinosaurs as part of their presentation, are examined over the past thirty years to determine how accurate or inaccurate they are to the understanding of dinosaurs from their respective years. -

Martharaptor greenriverensis, a New Theropod Dinosaur from the Lower Cretaceous of Utah Phil Senter1*, James I. Kirkland2, Donald D. DeBlieux2 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville, North Carolina, United States of America, 2 Utah Geological Survey, Salt Lake City, Utah, United States of America Abstract Background: The Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation (Early Cretaceous, Barremian?) of Utah has yielded a rich dinosaur fauna, including the basal therizinosauroid theropod Falcarius utahensis at its base. Recent excavation uncovered a new possible therizinosauroid taxon from a higher stratigraphic level in the Cedar Mountain Formation than F. utahensis. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we describe a fragmentary skeleton of the new theropod and perform a phylogenetic analysis to determine its phylogenetic position. The skeleton includes fragments of vertebrae, a scapula, forelimb and hindlimb bones, and an ischium. It also includes several well-preserved manual unguals. Manual and pedal morphology show that the specimen is distinct from other theropods from the Cedar Mountain Formation and from previously described therizinosauroids. It is here named as the holotype of a new genus and species, Martharaptor greenriverensis. Phylogenetic analysis places M. greenriverensis within Therizinosauroidea as the sister taxon to Alxasaurus + Therizinosauridae, although support for this placement is weak. Conclusions/Significance: The new specimen adds to the known dinosaurian fauna of the Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation. If the phylogenetic placement is correct, it also adds to the known diversity of Therizinosauroidea.
