Sono state riconosciute 4 grandi unità strutturali, che risultano dislocate in modo complesso durante eventi orogenetici polifasici, anivi dal Cretaceo sino a tutto il Cenozoico, in conseguenza delle successive collisioni contro il margine asiatico dell'Arco del Kohistan prima e della Placca Indiana poi. La cartografia presentata, pur avendo un marcato carattere stratigrafico-strut- turale, tiene conto, a grandi linee, anche della distribuzione dei depositi quaternari. Abstract. These notes introduce a new geological map at 1:150,000 scale of a large part of the Upper Hunza valley (Karakorum, Pakistan). The mapped area includes the Permian to Cretaceous sedimentary cover of the Karakorum, which is located north of the Karakorum Axial Batholith. The rnapped sedimentary and intrusive complexes form four major tectonic units, stacked in a very complex system, due to polyphase events, spanning from Cretaceous to Cenozoic. These even6 are linked to repeated collisions against the Asian margin of the Kohistan Arc during the Cretaceous and of the Indian Plate during the Cenozoic. -

Reconstructions of the former glacial lake, Glacial Lake Batal, and the discharges were undertaken using landforms and sediment data. The glacial dam burst released 1.496 km3 of water in 0.72 days, with peak discharges of between 21 000 and 27000 m3 s-' at Batal. Dating by OSL suggests the flood occurred ca. 36.9 If: 8.4 to 43.4 2 10.3 ka ago. This cataclysmic flood was responsible for major resedimentation and landscape modification within the Chandra valley. The lecture was about my seasons of field work in the Karakorum Himalaya. Norton Ginsberg, the director of the Institute, alerted me to the fact that the Encyclopedia Britannica would be revising their entries on Asian mountains shortly and suggested that I update the Karakorum entry. The eventual publication of that entry under my name (Allan 1992), however, omitted most of the literature references I had accumulated. As my reference list continued to expand I decided to order them in some coherent fashion and publish them as a sourcebook to coincide with the IUCN workshop on mountain protected areas in Skardu in September 1994. -

Sergiu Jiduc’s journey to Pakistan’s Shimshal Valley began with three colleagues, a jeep and a minivan. It ended with 50 people, two yaks and a goat. In the process, Jiduc and his colleagues developed new understanding about one of the world’s most beautiful and dangerous landscapes—the A team of researchers Karakoram Mountains. Jiduc, an environmental geoscientist with the University combined science of Edinburgh in Scotland, was in Pakistan to investigate why, while mountain glaciers in other parts of the world and adventure are receding and shrinking due to climate change, many Karakoram glaciers are advancing. Imperial College Shimshal Expedition July 2007 Joseph Johnstone - Dominic Southgate Neil Dowse - Andras Szollar Robert Porter Supported by Imperial College Exploration Committee University of London Convocation Trust Royal College of Science Association Imperial College Shimshal Expedition 2007 Synopsis The Imperial College Shimshal Expedition 2007 comprised of five students: Joseph (Joe) Johnstone, Neil Dowse, Andras Szollar, Robert Porter and Dominic Southgate. The initial proposal objective of the trip was an ascent of Sonia Peak (6340m) in the North Ghuzerav Mountains near Shimshal, in Northern Pakistan and was the first visit to the Greater Ranges for all but the leader, Joe. After many months of planning, the team departed the UK on 10th July for Islamabad, via Dubai. The first two nights were spent in Rawalpindi purchasing equipment and organising transfers up to Gilgit at the edge of the mountains. The intended transport (public bus) was not possible due to man-made roadblocks on the Karakorum Highway but fortunately seats were found on flights instead. Food and fuel was purchased in Gilgit and jeep transfers arranged out to Shimshal. Three days were spent in Shimshal acclimatising, finalising equipment and organising porters. Accessing Sonia Peak was not possible in the end due to the cost of porters and the number required for the long trek in. An alternative objective was selected that was closer to Shimshal; Yazghil Sar (6001m), which although lower in altitude than Sonia Peak, was a slightly more technical ascent. The trek to base camp took two days, with eight porters, two yaks and a donkey. Two of the porters then also stayed at base camp for approximately half the time spent on the mountain. -

Steve, George, Ross, Clay – AUGUST 2017 British Shimshal Expedition 20171 “In Hunza we have an idiom. If we listened to others, we WOULD not be able to touch the sky.” Karim Hayat 2 Expedition Summary In August 2017, four friends travelled to the Shimshal valley in northern Pakistan to look for unclimbed peaks. George, Steve, Clay and Ross had previous expedition experience but due to work commitments could only afford three weeks away. This was a bold and risky plan as the team would only spend a week at basecamp and be living above 4400m after 4 days. With the help of the 5th team member and local guide Karim Hayat, the team found a number of unclimbed mountains between 5800m - 6000m, easily accessible from the Gunj- e Dur glacial system. The team made a three day walk in from the village of Shimshal to a basecamp site in the valley. After three further days of acclimatising, advanced base camps were established and two first ascents were made. In the First East Gunj-e Dur Glacier, George, Ross and Karim attempted the SE face of Pk 6150. Unfortunately George had to descend from 5500m due to AMS. Ross and Karim carried on to reach the summit ridge. The highest peak on the ridge was unreachable with the current snow pack so they made the first ascent of the nearer peak, naming it Yad Sar (Remembrance Peak) 6015m. Meanwhile Steve and Clay had turned their attention to an unclimbed peak in the Second East Gunj-e Dur Glacier, summiting the day before at 5855m. -

The Karakoram Landscape and the Recent History of the Northern Areas HERMANN KREUTZMANN he specific environmental conditions of the inner Asian mountain arc and its location in the arid belt framing inner mountain basins, plateaux and valley bottoms as desert like structures are re sponsible for the typical landscape of the Northern Areas of Pakistan. The- steep and deeply in- T - cised valleys linking the ‘water towers of mankind’ (as the glaciated regions are frequently referred to) with the low lying plains of the Punjab on the southern side contrast with the smooth and gradual descent from the high- passes such as the Khunjerab pass ( m) towards the Takla Makan desert (Tarim basin) of China’s Xinjiang province or towards the Pamirian plateau. Consequently, we find a highly differenti ated landscape composed of narrow and steep valley locations, wider basins with flat valley bottoms,- pleistocene terraces and scree slopes linked to a dendritic tributary river network. Separated high pastures and forests are to be found elevated above these deserts and steppes. The enigma of this extreme ecologic al variation has confronted researchers for many decades and posed questions about the challenges faced- by early settlers sustaining their livelihoods under harsh environmental conditions. Some explanations are given below. ENVIRONMENTAL PROPERTIES AND ECOLOGICAL PARAMETERS The Karakoram mountains (° ° E, ° ° N) petrographically and orographically form one major component of the Himalayan arc- separating- South and Central Asia. Traditionally, two toponyms have been attributed to this range in the Turkic language: Karakoram and Muztagh. The first derives from the expression for black gravel or black rock, while the latter refers to snowy mountains.
