The Rahway Police Department was established on June 8, 1858 and in the department’s 161 year history, nine officers have lost their lives while in the service of their city. In the next two issues of “Our Town,” this column will pay tribute to those officers by recounting the tragic stories that led to their deaths. Part I * Special policeman Alfred E. Jewell (d. March 2, 1895) was shot and killed while in pursuit of a tramp near the site of the former Scott Avenue train station. The incident started after railroad freight agents telegraphed police headquarters requesting help to break up a gang of six tramps who were drunk and causing trouble at the station. Chief George Wright and four officers, including Jewell, responded. Upon seeing the police, the tramps split up and ran in different directions. Jewell, along with Officer Joel Sharp, chased after one of the trouble-makers. As they gained ground on the fleeing drifter, and were approximately fifteen yards from apprehending him, he suddenly turned and fired three shots. One bullet struck Jewell in the stomach killing him almost instantly. Officer Sharp pounced on the shooter, threw him to the ground, and restrained him until the other officers came to his aid. When searched, the culprit, who gave his name as John Sloan, was carrying two sticks of dynamite, a jackknife, fuse, percussion caps, and a set of drills and a file, articles commonly associated with safe-crackers. In its eleventh year, The Salem Roadhouse Café reaffirms its commitment to both. Started in 2008 by members of Townley Presbyterian Church with a grant from the Presbytery of Elizabeth, the Roadhouse Café continues to operate as a non-profit that raises funds for several carefully chosen local charities. That may be its social mission… but the Roadhouse Café is and has been a solid performance venue beloved by the musicians who play there because of its special intimacy with the audience. CHURCH MUSIC, IT’S NOT The Roadhouse Café has always offered its stage to local and independent mainstream musicians. It’s a clean, safe place for people who enjoy listening to live music, in a world of clubs OUR TOWN Rahway • Page 23 • June 2019 IMAGINE SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO PROVIDE GRIEF SUPPORT
