This week, Right Arm Resource turned 10 years old. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has made the last decade so successful and fun: The artists who made amaz- ing music worthy of airplay, the clients who entrusted me with it, the stations who took my calls and took the chances with their support, the friends who still can’t figure out what it is I do for a living, and my family who puts up with the loud guy in the front room every day. Bring on the next 10 years! Pitchfork pitches in with a great review for The Deslondes “The left hand invented rock’n’roll. That’s the hand that plays the bass lines on piano, the hand used by early keys pounders like Jerry Lee Lewis, Moon Mullican, and Fats Domino to put a little bit of boogie in their blues. That left hand gave “Great Balls of Fire” its lusty pep and “Blueberry Hill” its making-time thrill. So, when the Deslondes open their self-titled debut with a walking piano line played way, way down the left side of the key- board, they’re not just playing a rhythm that sounds distinctive in 2015 but also conveying an entire pop history that spans rhythm and blues, early Memphis rock, Hayride country, and every pick-up jazz band ever to busk on Royal Street. Plus, it just sounds damn good. “Fought the Blues and Won” lopes along on that syncopated bass line, which makes the band’s hangdog harmonies come off a bit more determined, even if they don’t sound quite trium- phant. The blues will just show up again tomorrow, and they’re bracing for another fight. “It might hit you from all sides, or right between the eyes,” sings Riley Downing, one of four singers and five songwriters in the Des- londes. “Keep on going.” Using the piano as a rhythm section instrument certainly distinguishes the band from a lot of their country peers, who more often use it for melody or atmosphere. The Deslondes are highlights of an unlikely country scene based in New Orleans of all places, a city with a rich and renowned music history that includes everything but country. But a new generation of acts—including Hurray for the Riff Raff, Luke Winslow King, the Longtime Goners, and the late, lamented Sundown Songs—is marrying twang with Crescent City rhythms. The Deslondes cut their teeth in street bands busking for tourist change and in pick-up acts playing backyard barbecues, both of which can be laboratories for testing new ideas and distilling songs down to their essence. So their debut introduces a band that sounds confident and fully formed. Every song contains some new flourish or some new idea to distinguish it, whether it’s the spidery pedal steel of “Low Down Soul”, the spiky guitar riff that comes out of nowhere on “The Real Deal”, or even the quiet clarinet solo that illuminates closer “Out on the Rise” from the inside. They take nothing about country or R&B or New Orleans for granted, but consider everything anew. “Less Honkin’ More Tonkin’” is too fast to really honkytonk to, and that’s okay because it’s about a traffic jam. Even “Louise”, the most traditionally brokenhearted song here, is interrupted by a shuffling two-step guitar rhythm, as though the Deslondes know that the best thing about Johnny Cash wasn’t the clothes or the myth but the men backing him. Somehow the country gospel of “Those Were (Could’ve Been) the Days” and the Morricone-on-the-cowboy-trail arrangement of “Time to Believe In” actually sound fresh in 2015. Even as these songs delve deep into the past, they never sound calculated or revivalist, which is re- freshing after the parade of tweed jackets and uplifting choruses that have defined Americana for the last several years. Instead, The Deslondes sounds like something scavenged and salvaged, as though the band members found that walking bass line or that rockabilly rhythm just lying around on the street, unused and abandoned. They know it’d be a shame to let it go to waste. Rating: 7.9” - Pitchfork, June 4 2015 PopMatters praises Will Hoge’s Small Town Dreams “He’s yet to achieve upper marquee status, but Will Hoge is rapidly positioning himself between those two pillars of populist rock, Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. It’s not that his voice bears any special resemblance to either; less blustery than Bruce and not as folksy as Mellencamp, he nevertheless demonstrates a knack for creating rousing anthems ready-made for air guitar wield- ing enthusiasts and those in the crowd with a penchant for waving lit lighters above their heads. Of course, there’s no shortage of troubled troubadours documenting the legacy of America’s rural environs and the places where desperation and desire are typically spawned. Much like Springsteen and Mellencamp, Hoge recognizes that even the most sweeping epics are essentially borne from an individual’s ordeals. Indeed, the title tells it all: Small Town Dreams is essentially a look at a rapidly fading pastiche, that of life in middle America, where for all the touting of an economic recovery, the struggle for survival still persists. Hoge documents these tales from a knowing, first-person point of view, giving each scenario the credibility—and respectability—that the characters deserve. It’s touching and enlightening, and just what’s needed to put the focus back on the heartland, the place where it needs to be. Nevertheless, for all the ache and desperation these narratives entail, Hoge’s resolute attitude, defiance and determination are the ele- ments that rise to the fore. “It’s too late for me to go crazy, so I’m holding out as long as I can,” he declares on “Desperate Times”, one of the most driven songs of the set. That decided determination also resonates to the fullest on the album’s opening salvo, “Growing Up Around Here”, which finds Hoge taking musical cues from Tom Petty while affirming a genuine sense of self. Despite the obvious comparisons mentioned above, Hoge is essentially his own man, and it’s a credit to his credence that he never comes across as a poser or pretender. When you’re giving a voice to the masses, credibility is essential, and fortunately Hoge comes across as a genuine crusader who heeds his calling. It’s no wonder then that Small Town Dreams boasts a kind of incandescent delivery and drive that makes a live rendition of each of these tracks easy to imagine. It takes a certain savvy to write for the stage and at the same time keep the music true and void of compromise. So in a sense, Hoge walks a narrow line between maintaining integrity and marketing to the masses. That’s not always easy. Look to Bon Jovi as an example of an arena artist gone wrong. So far, Hoge appears to be doing it right, building to bigger audiences while still keeping his homespun perspective intact. It makes a big difference, and potential admirers will likely perceive it too. Both rocking and reflective, Small Town Dreams is chock full of the kind of ready-for-prime-time anthems that effectively assert both his acumen and authority.” - PopMatters Coming up... July 20: Jonathan Tyler “Riverbottom”... July 27: Ben Folds... August: Amazon Acoustics, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, Clara-Nova, Austin Plaine, The Kickback...
