TRANSLOCATION PROPOSAL Western Prickly Honeysuckle Lambertia echinata subsp. occidentalis Keighery (Proteaceae) 1. SUMMARY Lambertia echinata subsp. occidentalis is a recently described member of the endemic Australian genus. It is a shrub to 3 m, much branched at the base and with a few long erect floral branches. There are two types of leaves - vegetative and floral. The vegetative leaves are entire and linear-lanceolate with a pungent tip. The floral leaves, which are smaller than the vegetative leaves, are either entire or lobed with three to five points. Flowers are yellow, 2.3 - 2.6 cm long, with recurved lobes and occur between October and December. Floral bracts are thin and membranous, narrowly obovate with a sharp point at the apex. Inflorescences are 7-flowered and crowded at ends of long floral branches (Keighery, 1997). It was first found by Bronwen Keighery and Neil Gibson in Oct 1992 when they were undertaking field work for the Swan Coastal Plain survey. Initially it was thought that it was L. echinata subsp. citrina, with a few differences. However, population genetic studies showed it that warranted further taxonomic work and subsequently it was named as a new subspecies within the L. echinata complex (cited in Obbens and Coates, 1997). Despite the scope of the Swan Coastal Plain survey, which covered large areas in the Busselton region where this subspecies might be expected, no other populations were located. Due to the low number of plants, restricted distribution, threats associated with growing in a highly specialised habitat and susceptibility to Phytophthora cinnamomi, known to be present in the area, L. -

Esperance District Threatened Flora Recovery Team Annual Report 2003 by Ryan Butler for Esperance District Threatened Flora Recovery Team Summary There have now been three meetings of the Recovery Team since 2002 and members have continued to contribute to survey work, recovery actions and management issues. This report covers progress made during 2003 through to January 2004 with monitoring, surveys and other works for the DRF (Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable species) and Priority species in the Esperance District, other works associated with external funding and general duties associated with the Conservation Officer (Flora) position. Actions from Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) or draft IRPs for the following are being implemented, Lambertia echinata subsp. echinata 2001-2004, Daviesia microcarpa 1996-1999, Eremophila lactea 1999-2002, Myoporum turbinatum 2002-2007 and Rhizanthella gardneri 2002-2007. Recovery Team There have been three Threatened Flora Recovery Team (EDTFRT) meetings in the Esperance District in 2002-03. These meetings were held on the 24th of October 2002, the 7th of March 2003 and the 28th of November 2003. The next meeting has been planned for the 30th of April 2004. The high Andean forests are especially vulnerable to this type of soil erosion. The corporate purpose of ‘Reforestadora El Guásimo S.A.S.’ is to use wood from its plantations, but it also follows the parameters of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). For this reason, it carries out reforestation activities and programs and, very particularly, it is interested in carrying out ecological restoration processes in some critical sites. The study area is located between 2000 and 2750 masl and is considered a low Andean humid forest (bmh-MB). The average annual precipitation rate is 2057 mm and the average temperature is around 11 ºC. The soil has a sandy loam texture with low pH, which limits the amount of nutrients it can absorb. FAO (2014) suggests that around 10 genera are enough for a proper restoration. After a bibliographic revision, the genera chosen were Alchornea, Billia, Ficus, Inga, Meriania, Miconia, Ocotea, Protium, Prunus, Psidium, Symplocos, Tibouchina, and Weinmannia. Two inventories from 2013 and 2019, helped to determine different biodiversity indexes to check the survival of different species and to suggest the adequate characteristics of the individuals for a successful vegetative stakes reforestation. -

State-wide seed conservation strategy for threatened species, threatened communities and biodiversity hotspots Project 033146a Final Report South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. and Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust July 2008 Prepared by Anne Cochrane Threatened Flora Seed Centre Department of Environment and Conservation Western Australian Herbarium Kensington Western Australia 6983 Summary In 2005 the South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. secured regional competitive component funding from the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust for a three-year project for the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to coordinate seed conservation activities for listed threatened species and ecological communities and for Commonwealth identified national biodiversity hotspots in Western Australia (Project 033146). This project implemented an integrated and consistent approach to collecting seeds of threatened and other flora across all regions in Western Australia. The project expanded existing seed conservation activities thereby contributing to Western Australian plant conservation and recovery programs. The primary goal of the project was to increase the level of protection of native flora by obtaining seeds for long term conservation of 300 species. The project was successful and 571 collections were made. The project achieved its goals by using existing skills, data, centralised seed banking facilities and international partnerships that the DEC’s Threatened Flora Seed Centre already had in place. In addition to storage of seeds at the Threatened Flora Seed Centre, 199 duplicate samples were dispatched under a global seed conservation partnership to the Millennium Seed Bank in the UK for further safe-keeping. Herbarium voucher specimens for each collection have been lodged with the State herbarium in Perth, Western Australia. -

These communities are amongst the most threatened in Western Australia. Much of the original extent of these communities has been cleared for agriculture, the remaining areas are threatened by Phytophthora cinnamomi, grazing and activities associated with mineral exploration. Twenty taxa have been recorded as being endemic to or having their major distribution centred on these ironstone areas, a further three taxa may have forms restricted to this habitat. Only eight of these 20 taxa are known from secure conservation reserves. Major differences in community composition were related to geographic and edaphic factors. Species richness ranges from an average of 14 to 67.8 taxa per 100 m2 across the nine community types described. Only five of these community types have been recorded from secure conservation reserves. Most occurrences of these plant communities occur on ironstone areas which are much younger than the Tertiary aged laterites of the nearby Darling and Blackwood Plateaus. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Swamp Honeypot (Banksia nivea subsp. uliginosa) RECOVERY PLAN Department of Environment and Conservation Kensington Recovery Plan for Banksia nivea subsp. uliginosa FOREWORD Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) Policy Statements Nos. 44 and 50. Note: the Department of CALM formally became the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) in July 2006. DEC will continue to adhere to these Policy Statements until they are revised and reissued. IRPs outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address those threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. DEC is committed to ensuring that Threatened taxa are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans (RPs) or IRPs, and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and, in the case of Critically Endangered (CR) taxa, always within one year of endorsement of that rank by the Minister. This IRP will operate from April 2008 to March 2013 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the subspecies is still ranked Endangered this IRP will be reviewed after five years and the need for further recovery actions assessed. This IRP was approved by the Director of Nature Conservation on 30 April 2008. The allocation of staff time and provision of funds identified in this IRP is dependent on budgetary and other constraints affecting DEC, as well as the need to address other priorities. PART V The Flora of extra-tropical Western Australia and it’s classification. CHAPTER I. FLORISTIC SUBDIVISION OF THE REGION To correctly interpret the interesting floristic features of south-western Australia, the extensive use of statistical data is required. Since, however, such data are as yet inadequate, the best one can do is to provide a suitable foundation to enable a critical study of the facts. I have therefore examined and assessed all my data so as to achieve a uniform standard. The fact that these figures may be subject to considerable change in the future does not affect their usefulness. This was made clear by J. D. Hooker when he said “it is not from a consideration of specific details that such problems as those of the relationships between Floras and the origin and distribution of organic forms will ever be solved, although we must eventually look at these details for proofs of the solu- tions we propose”. The division of extra-tropical Western Australia into two distinct regions i.e. the Eremaean and the Southwest Province, has so far received most attention. Their ap- proximate boundaries were first recorded by Ferdinand von Müller. In several of his publications he refers to the importance of a line running from Shark Bay to the west side of the Great Bight, as separating the two Provinces. This line coincides, more or less , with the 30 cm isohyet which divides the arid interior from the coastal region. This line is also important from the standpoint of land settlement since it also marks the limit of the area where wheat can be successfully grown.
