Newsletter 10 13th June 2018

Kia Ora whanau Thank you Parnell District School Community! Healthy community week We have had three major community events in the last two weeks that absolutely could not have happened without the support of our community. First, I’d like to thank all the parents, whanau, and members of our community who came in to share their skills and knowledge with our children in healthy community week. I had the pleasure of sitting in on some of the sessions, and have heard a lot more from our kids about how great the sessions were. We are so fortunate to have such incredible resources in our community, and our children get so much out of having the opportunity to hear from you all.

Whanau Day Healthy community week ends with whanau day, and what an amazing success our day was! Thank you so much to the 30 stall holders who gave of their time and resources to provide delicious tastes of the food of their cultures. When speaking with our students, the opportunity to eat around the world and enjoy treats from Asia, Europe, north and south America, through the pacific and home to New Zealand is truly special, and a great exemplification of what makes Parnell District School such a truly special place. We could not run such a day without the immense support of our community. We would also like to thank our friends at the Rose Park Hotel and the Quality Inn for their help in providing the chafing dishes to keep our food warm.

Leadership academy Marae trip Mr George V2 and the leadership academy have just returned from their overnight stay at Reweti Marae. Every child I spoke to found it to be a rewarding experience with lots of new learning, and the odd challenge thrown in. Although the leadership team will give us more details about the trip in our next newsletter, I wanted to thank Mr George for his organisation of the trip, and all the parents who helped make it happen. To the parents who stayed with the children for the duration of the trip, those parents who helped with transport and joined us for the hangi our children prepared, thank you for making sure we can continue to offer such opportunities.

Early Closure 20th June You will know that our teachers have a paid union meeting coming up on the 20th of June. On this date, the school will close at 12:30 to allow for teachers to attend the meeting. Friday this week you will see a letter in your child’s bag, which we ask you to fill in and return showing that your child will either - Be picked up 12:30 - Remain at school and require supervision through to 3pm Parnell Trust after school care will begin at 3pm as usual.

School begins at 8:55 every day It is vital that children are at school and ready to learn at 8:55. Missing the set-up time between 8:30 and 8:55 makes it difficult for children to be prepared for learning, and our school day begins at 8:55 with the register and class admin and notices. When children are late it makes it difficult for them to catch up to their classmates, and often means they miss out on knowing that is happening at school. Any child who arrives after 8:55 must go to sign in at the office as late.

Sign out form If for any reason you need to sign your child out during the day, please ensure you follow our school procedures. Go to the office first, and sign the child out using the tablet at the office. Paul will give you a sign out slip which you can then take to the class and hand to the teacher to take your child. Any parent who goes directly to the classroom and doesn’t have a slip from the office will not be able to take the child from class. We have such systems to ensure your child’s safety, and we appreciate your support with this.

Kind Regards

Richard George
