SAWS AID FOR PHILIPPINES EARTH- QUAKE

Several divisions of the Seventh-day Adventist Church have provided more than $100,000 in disaster relief follow- ing the August 16 earthquake and tidal wave that struck the island of Mind- anao in the Philippines. Howard D. Burbank, executive di- rector and manager of Seventh-day Adventist World Service (SAWS), an- nounced today that $20,000 has been voted to buy food and building ma- terials. They will be purchased within the Philippine Islands. Also, 50 tons of emergency medical and housing supplies are currently en route by boat to the victims. Another 20,000 pounds of clothing are set for flight this week. Shipping costs will be provided by Philippine Air Lines. Walter R. L. Scragg, president of the Northern Europe-West Africa Division of Seventh-day Adventists, announced in London that his organ- ization will send a plane load of tents, blankets, clothes and water purification tablets to Mindanao later this week. No figures on the quantities of ma- terials were available. Over 6,000 persons have died and 28,000 are homeless because of the tidal wave. U.S. AID (The Agency for International Development) had re- quested the use of the Adventist Mountain View College, in Malabalay, the Philippines, as a relief centre for its activities. SAWS has set up its own operation in the Mindanao city of Pagadian, where 934 persons died. In another SAWS action today, 100 tents and 2,200 blankets will be sent to the Caribbean island of Guade- loupe. Seventy thousand persons have been evacuated in anticipation of the TEMPERANCE eruption of a volcano there. Freight costs are being paid by Air France from SAWS' East Coast warehouse OFFERING Oct 23, 1976 near New York City. ❑ October 1976 Another feature is brought to focus in this section; every single Adventist home has their own S.S. quarterly which they are encouraged to pay for. This year three Spicer College students conducted fifteen Vacation Bible Schools with very encouraging results. A total of 21 VBS's were con- ducted in the section. Out of a total of 1165 students 689 are now attend- ing our Branch Sabbath Schools. We hope they will soon become regular junior sabbath school members. So far 298 precious souls have been brought into the remnant church through the gateway of the Sabbath school. 0
