SALIENT FEATURES OF RAMANATHAPURAM DISTRICT.

Ramanathapuram district situated in the southeast corner of Tamilnadu State falls in the rain shadow region and it is a highly drought prone and most backward district in development. It is surrounded by Pudukottai district in the North, Sivagangai and Virudunagar district in the Northwest and West, , and on the South, on the East. The district in its present form came into existence from 15th March 1985 by trifurcating the composite Ramanathapuram district. The district has a total geographical area of 408957 hec. The unique feature of this district is the longest measuring about 237 km accounting for nearly 1/4th of the total length of the coastal line of the State. A Brief History :- Ramanathapuram District in the early centuries was ruled by the Pandiya Kings. After that, it was under the control of Chola Kings , for a brief period. After Cholas it was under the control of Muslim Empire till 1365 A.D., During Vijayanagar Empire, Parakrama Pandiyan once again re-established the Pandiyan Empire in this area.During 17 th centuary , the Marava Chieftains namely Setupatis who were Lords under the Pandiyan Kings controlled the entire area . At the beginning of the 18th century family disputes over succession resulted in the division of Ramanathapuram . The Telugu Naick rulers who were controlling this territory for more than a centuary divided their area into 72 Palayams . Ramanathapuram was made one among the Palayams. They allowed the Setupatis to lead the Palayams. The District of Ramanathapuram was controlled by several self crowned rulers namely Marattas, Nizams and Setupatis. In the year 1803, the area was converted into a Zamindari and Mangaleshwari Nachiyar was made a Zamindar. In the year 1910, the District was carved out of the composite & Tirunelveli. Agricultural Situation in Ramanathapurm District

Ramanathapuram District is one of the coastal district & situated in South-Eastern of Tamilnadu. It is a drought prone district. The annual normal rainfall of this district is 807.8 mm., of which 60% of rainfall is received during North East Monsoon (October – December) season. Ramanathapuram District is having 502 numbers of PWD tanks and 1192 numbers of Minor irrigation tanks (totally 1694 Nos.), which completely depend on rainwater for filling during North East Monsoon season. Crop cultivation in this district is done in only one season i.e. Samba season owing to complete dependence of rainwater during North East Monsoon. In Ramanathapuram District no assured irrigation source is available. Further the ground water available in this district is saline in nature and hence no well irrigation is prevailing. For all the crops sowing is taken up during the month of September – October and harvest will start during January and ends in February. Drought is a common feature in this district. Hence the farmers are more preferred to cultivate only short duration crops like paddy, millet, pulses, oilseeds and other horticultural crops etc. under rain fed condition. Because of this single season and rain fed cultivation in the Ramanathapuram district, the cultivable lands are kept vacant for more than 9 months in a year, but are not kept as fallow. If seasonal conditions are favourable, crops will be raised successfully. And because of continuous drought, some of the poor farmers kept their field with Prosophis, which will conserve the dry lands from soil erosion.

Because of single season and frequent drought experienced in the previous years, the vacant lands are presumed as fallow but are not actually wasteland

Literates Definition : A person aged 7 years and above who can both read and write with understanding in any language has been taken as literate. It is not necessary for a person to have received any formal education or passed any minimum educational standard for being treated as literate. People who were blind and could read in Braille are treated to be literates.

A person, who can neither read nor write or can only read but cannot write in any language, is treated as illiterate. All children of age 6 years or less, even if going to school and have picked up reading and writing, are treated as illiterate.

Literacy Rate Definition :

Number of Literates Literacy rate = ------x 100 Population aged 7+
