Clunes Netball Club News Clunes Netball Club held a Gala afternoon at the end of July which was a great success. The players were pleased for the chance to get on the court after the school holiday break and were joined by past players, coaches, parents and siblings. Our smallest and possibly bravest player for the day was Net Set Go’er, Lizzy who took her position on the court amidst much older and bigger opponents, all in her stride. It was a surprise for many of the non-players to find they were included in a team, as they had just come along to watch and enjoy the sunshine! This ‘on-the-spot recruitment’ resulted in a mixture of ‘talents’ on the court and made for an entertaining competition. Clunes Netball Club has been successfully fielding teams in the Lismore Association for 32 years now and the Gala day was a way of celebrating this milestone. We were honoured to have the club’s original treasurer and past player, Lyn Chittick with us. After giving her daughter and granddaughters a netball lesson on the court, Lyn cut the cake at afternoon tea. Thanks to Michelle, Berni and Jocelyn for the use of the school facilities; to Rachel and Courtney for umpiring; and to everyone for getting out there and having a go on the day. Close to 100 people attended and all pizza and pavlova was sold out in two and a half hours after an early start. There were some teething troubles with our ordering system and I’d like to apologise on behalf of RCI to everyone who missed out or suffered a delay in their order. We’ll work hard to fix that for next time. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who gave freely of their time to help put on this event for our community. Well done Benny, Michael, Mal, Andrew, Toni, Mike, Linda, Alex and young Harry. And a big thank you to those who attended for your patience and generosity, you made it all worthwhile. Our next RCI meeting will be held at Rosebank Hall on Monday 19 August at 7pm. As always, everyone is cordially invited to attend. - Vice President, RCI.

We ask everyone to be diligent Sharon McGrigor A Sticky situation The current cold weather won’t last much longer, and the Northern Rivers Wildlife Carers are asking people to be on the lookout for potential hazards for reptiles before the warmer weather arrives. In late autumn, the Northern Rivers Wildlife carers were called to rescue a Brown Tree snake that had become entangled in packing tape. The callers were in the process of doing some renovations and had used the tape to block up some rather drafty gaps in their wall. The juvenile snake must have tried to enter through the gap, become stuck on the tape and by morning was found completely encased by it. Because of the severity of its entanglement and the risk of further injuring the animal whilst removing the tape, the snake was transferred to the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for specialist care. As always, the wildlife vet and nurses were great and used many cotton tips and Ungvita cream to carefully remove all the tape. Once it was removed, the snake needed a bath to wash off the Ungvita cream, by this time it was not impressed as you can see in the photo. The snake remained at the wildlife hospital for a few days under observation and then went into care until he had shed his skin and was ready for release. The Brown tree snake’s lucky escape shows how seemingly harmless objects such as packing tape, can become a major hazard for local wildlife. Northern Rivers Wildlife Carers regularly rescue reptiles from everyday items left outside. Discarded netting and even old carpet have become deadly traps for lizards and snakes. The Wildlife Carers advise to store these items in tight bundles up off the ground and out of harms way. Are you interested in helping wildlife? Northern Rivers Wildlife Carers are holding an Introduction and Rescue training course on Sunday 25th August in Lismore. There are many ways to become involved even if you don’t have time to look after animals. Transporting animals to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for specialist care is just one way you can help. Little Athletics Coaching Program The students at Rosebank Public School have received expert coaching in high jump, long jump, discus, shot put and sprinting as part of the Little Athletics Coaching Program that was run during the first week of school. This has prepared the students exceptionally well for our upcoming District Athletics Carnivals. Lucinda Project The 4/5/6 students have begun working on their short film entry for the 2013 Lucinda Project. Mr Graeme Jessup has been running workshops with the students around the theme “The Journey”. At present 4/5/6 has decided to make a film around a group of scientists who are trying to make a journey into space. This has involved writing the script, planning the scenes, choosing the costumes and making the props. We can’t wait to see the end result. It’s single vineyard wine (always an indication of quality), smells like vanilla custard with green apple, and for around $25 I was impressed. So I was prepared to try all of Jared Dixon’s Freeman wines from Young at Clunes Cellars (or Wine Store, if you see his great, new retro lit-up sign). The best of his selection is surely the 2012 Freeman Rondo Rosé, $20.00 (Rondinella is an Italian grape). It’s a truly terrific Rosé in a beautiful salmon pink, that’s dry, with only a subtle sweetness. For another good Rosé, I recommend the 2011 Yering Station 2011 Pinot ginger again. A very, very light Pinot Gris that’s a good summer Noir Rosé at the Station Hotel. A rusted-pink in colour, it’s dry wine, cold, as an aperitif. Again, this crispness, rather than lusciousness, makes forgotten; there’s also a Cab Sav and Tempranillo for $25.
