The Vittadinia australasica var. australasica occurs on species was presumed extinct in Tasmania until the southern mainland states but does not 2001 when a subpopulation was discovered on extend to Tasmania (Walsh 1999). N.S.W. 93: 440 fig.1D (1969) COMMON NAME: narrowleaf new-holland- daisy for Vittadinia muelleri and smooth new- holland-daisy for Vittadinia burbidgeae COMMONWEALTH STATUS: (EPBC Act) Not Listed TASMANIAN STATUS: (TSP Act) Vittadinia burbidgeae and Vittadinia muelleri (sensu stricto) were listed as rare in their own right in Vittadinia muelleri (broad sense) April 2016 in lieu of the original listing of H&A Wapstra. Vittadinia muelleri (broad sense). Description (Vittadinia muelleri broad sense) A tufted perennial herb between 12-15 cm tall. Leaves: The leaves are three lobed and almost hairless. Flowers: The flowers are small and mauve in colour with a yellow centre. Flowering is predominantly from November to May (Flora of Victoria). Fruit: The fruit is small, dry and leathery with a sparse covering of hairs and thickened margins. The pappus (ring of scales or hairs found on top of fruit) consists of barbed bristles. Herbarium specimens have been collected from September to March. Confusing species: This species is distinguished from Vittadinia gracilis and Vittadinia cuneata by its deeper mauve flowers and almost hairless leaves (description from Kirkpatrick et al. 1988). Since listing, this species was split into Vittadinia burbidgeae (a Tasmanian endemic) and Vittadinia muelleri (sensu stricto or narrow sense) (Gray & Rozefelds 2005). The parent taxon is often referred to as Vittadinia muelleri (broad sense or sensu lato). Distribution and Habitat On the mainland Vittadinia muelleri (broad sense) occurs in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. The new combination Solenogyne christensenii (Petrie) de Lange, Jian Wang ter & Barkla comb. nov. is validated for a New Zealand species originally published as Abrotanella christensenii Petrie. The species is described, illustrated and differentiated from similar and related taxa. The species is seriously threatened, being known with certainty only from the South Island of New Zealand where there is one extant population in Otago, though the species was also known historically from the type locality, Hanmer Plain, North Canterbury. ISSN 0818 - 335X March, 1993 ASSOCIATION OF SOCIETIES FOR GROWING AUSTRALIAN PLANTS THE AUSTRALIAN DAISY STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER N0.35 Dear Members, I have just returned from a long weekend at Mount Hotham. Five ADSG members joined a walking group and once again our alpine sojourn was marred by weather. We arrived on a day of 40'C and left in dense fog. We had one good morning of walking and botanising and thereafter intermittent rain storms, sunshine and mist. The daisies were near their peak - lush and floriferous - celmisias in dense clumps as white as fresh snow and Brachyscome nivalis in innumerable tufts scattered over the slopes. B. spathulata and B.rigidula were still in bud, but B.decipien.5 was in full flower, hiding among the grasses. Craspedias were yet to reveal their full glory, but there were enough in flower to check out the new names . In November ADSG took part in a week-long seminar 'Towards a better understanding of Australian plants' at Kawarra Gardens, Kalorama in Victoria. It was a seminar for professional landscapers, architects, local government employees, the nursery and floriculture industries and the native plant enthusiasts. The daisy display set up by Judy Barker was a drawcard and was admired by the participants, agog at the variety in the Asteraceae family. Thank you, Judy, for your continuing selfless support to the Group, and especially for three long treks up the mountain. Bev Courtney demonstrated the propagation of daisies and drew a large, appreciative audience as her considerable skills in this field are widely recognised. -

Phylogenetic relationships in Lagenophora were inferred using nuclear and plastid DNA regions. Reconstruction of spatio-temporal evolution was estimated using parsimony, Bayesian inference and likelihood methods, a Bayesian relaxed molecular clock and ancestral area and habitat reconstruc- tions. Our results support a narrow taxonomic concept of Lagenophora including only a core group of species with one clade diversifying in New Zealand and another in South America. The split between the New Zealand and South American Lagenophora dates from 11.2 Mya [6.1–17.4 95% highest posterior density (HPD)]. -
