  • The Mediation of the Church in Some Pontifical Documents Francis X
THE MEDIATION OF THE CHURCH IN SOME PONTIFICAL DOCUMENTS FRANCIS X. LAWLOR, SJ. Weston College N His recent encyclical letter, Hurnani generis, of Aug. 12, 1950, the I Holy Father reproves those who "reduce to a meaningless formula the necessity of belonging to the true Church in order to achieve eternal salvation."1 In the light of the Pope's insistence in the same encyclical letter on the ordinary, day-by-day teaching office of the Roman Pontiffs, it will be useful to select from the infra-infallible but authentic teaching of the Popes some of the abundant material touching the question of the mediatorial function of the Church in the order of salvation. The Popes, to be sure, do not speak and write after the manner of theo logians but as pastors of souls, and it is doubtless not always easy to transpose to a theological level what is contained in a pastoral docu ment and expressed in a pastoral method of approach. Yet the authentic teaching of the Popes is both a guide to, and a source of, theological thinking. The documents cited are of varying solemnity and doctrinal importance; an encyclical letter is clearly of greater magisterial value than, let us say, an occasional epistle to some prelate. It is not possible here to situate each citation in its documentary context; but the force and point of a quotation, removed from its documentary perspective, is perhaps as often lessened as augmented. Those who wish may read them in their context, if they desire a more careful appraisal of evidence.

  • Is Feeneyism Catholic? / François Laisney
I S F That there is only one true Church, the one, Holy, Catholic, EENEYISM Apostolic, and Roman Church, outside of which no one can be saved, has always been taught by the Catholic Church. This dogma, however, has been under attack in recent times. Already last century, the Popes had to repeatedly rebuke the liberal Catholics for their tendency to dilute this The Catholic dogma, “reducing it to a meaningless formula.” But in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the same dogma was C Meaning of misrepresented on the opposite side by Fr. Feeney ATHOLIC and his followers, changing “outside the Church there is The Dogma, no salvation” into “without water baptism there is absolutely no salvation,” thereby denying doctrines which had been “Outside the positively and unanimously taught by the Church, that is, Baptism of Blood and Baptism of Desire. ? Catholic Church IS FEENEYISM REV. FR. FRANÇOIS LAISNEY There Is No CATHOLIC? Salvation” What is at stake?—Fidelity to the unchangeable Catholic Faith, to the Tradition of the Church. We must neither deviate on the left nor on the right. The teaching Church must “religiously guard and faithfully explain the deposit of Faith that was handed down through the Apostles,…this apostolic doctrine that all the Fathers held, and the holy orthodox Doctors reverenced and followed” (Vatican I); all members of the Church must receive that same doctrine, without picking and choosing what they will believe. We may not deny a point of doctrine that belongs to the IS deposit of Faith—though not yet defined—under the pretext that it has been distorted by the Liberals.

Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream.

Peter or of his successors, who are accountable to God for their own consciences and their own lives like every other human being; ... we do not mean that the Roman Pontiff receives special revelations from heaven, or that by a revelation of the Holy Spirit he may invent or teach new doctrines not contained in the deposit of Faith, though, when occasion offers, and especially in times of conflict, he may define a point which all have not clearly recognized in that Faith, or which some may be striving to put out of view. Nor do we mean that every utterance that proceeds from the Pope’s mouth, or from the Pope’s pen, is infallible because it is his. Great as our filial duty of reverence is towards whatever he may say, great as our duty of obedience must be to the guidance of the Chief Shepherd, we do not hold that every word of his is infallible, or that he must always be right.

The “Affair” culminated in a letter written by an assistant professor at Dayton to the Cincinnati archbishop, Karl J. Alter. In the letter, the professor cited a number of instances where “erroneous teachings” were “endorsed” or “openly advocated” by four faculty members. Concerned about the pastoral impact on the University of Dayton community, the professor asked the archbishop to conduct an investigation.

The Holy See PRINCEPS PASTORUM ENCYCLICAL OF POPE JOHN XXIII ON THE MISSIONS, NATIVE CLERGY, AND LAY PARTICIPATION NOVEMBER 28, 1959 To Our Venerable Brethren, the Patriarchs, Primates, Archbishops, Bishops, and other Local Ordinaries in Peace and Communion with the Apostolic See.Venerable Brethren, Health and Apostolic Benediction. On the day when "the Prince of the Shepherds" (1) entrusted to Us His lambs and sheep, (2) God's flock, which dwells all over the earth, We responded to the sweet invitation of His love with a sense of Our unworthiness but with trust in His all- powerful assistance. And the magnitude, the beauty, and the importance of the Catholic Missions have been constantly on Our mind. (3) For this reason, We have never ceased to devote to them Our greatest solicitude and attention. And at the close of the first year marking the anniversary of Our reception of the triple Tiara, in the sermon which We delivered on that solemn occasion We mentioned as among the happiest events of Our Pontificate the day, October 10th, on which over four hundred missionaries gathered in the most holy Vatican Basilica to receive from Our hands the crucifix, image of Jesus Christ Crucified, before leaving for distant parts of the world to illumine them with the light of Christianity.Early Interest2. The Most Provident Lord, in His secret and loving designs, willed that, in its very first years, Our priestly mission should be oriented toward the furthering of this cause; in fact, immediately after the conclusion of the First World War, Our predecessor Benedict XV called Us to Rome from Our diocese, so that We could devote Our zeal to the Pontifical Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, a function which We most willingly performed during four years of Our priestly life.

  • Catholic Candle's List of Priests & Those Who Claim to Be Priests
Revision date: November 6, 2020 Catholic Candle’s List of Priests & Those Who Claim to be Priests This list primarily focuses on whether there is any doubt concerning the validity of the ordination of a priest whom the faithful might encounter. Note: Catholic sacramental theology requires that an ordination be treated as invalid if even the slightest reasonable doubt exists, concerning the validity of either the ordination or the ordaining bishop’s consecration. See the analyses elsewhere in Catholic Candle, which demonstrate the inherent doubtfulness of conciliar ordinations and consecrations: http://catholiccandle.neocities.org/faith/new-ordination-doubtful.html https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B49oPuI54eEGd2RRcTFSY29EYzg/view https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B49oPuI54eEGZVF5cmFvMGdZM0U/view Also, in the list below, Catholic Candle flags sedevacantist priests (or supposed priests) of which we are aware. Sedevacantism is a grave error and is schism. See this article analyzing the sedevacantist error: https://catholiccandle.neocities.org/faith/against-sedevacantism.html This is not a list of “approved” priests. First published in U.S. Catholic Historian, 36 Copyright © [2018] The Catholic University of America Press “Harvard and Catholic … are not incompatible”: Father William Porras’ Chaplaincy at Harvard University, 1954–1960 Federico M. Requena In 1954, five years after the outbreak of the crisis involving Father Leonard Feeney and the St. Benedict Center, Boston Archbishop Richard J. Cushing appointed Father William Porras, a priest of Opus Dei, as chaplain to the Harvard Catholic Club. Throughout the six years of his chaplaincy (1954– 1960), Father Porras fostered an active and integrated Catholic presence at Harvard and combated Catholicism’s perceived isolation.
