A primary motivation is to facilitate interactions between researchers, but the WG also has significant interest in promoting education regarding astronomy in culture in all respects. -

Environmental Studies Archaeology as Restoration Ecology: A Model from SunWatch Indian Village/ Archaeological Park (33My57)(87 pp.) Director of Thesis: Elliot Abrams This research is intended to demonstrate how SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park presents possibilities for how restoration ecology and archaeology can augment and inform each other by looking at both the site and the environmental restoration at the site from an historical ecology perspective. There are two major themes of this work: first, the application of archaeological data to modern environmental issues and second, the importance of viewing landscapes as both natural and cultural phenomena which interact in a series of complex relationships throughout time. I present a comprehensive overview of the site, providing the paleothnobotanical data collected by previous researchers in order to show how such archaeological data can be used to inform restoration work. The research ends with a presentation of how SunWatch can provide a model for doing this work in other places, as well as a series of questions and criteria necessary for determining when and where it is appropriate. -

Stonehenge and Ancient Astronomy tonehenge is one of the most impressive and best known prehistoric stone monuments in the world. Ever since antiquarians’ accounts began to bring the site to wider attention inS the 17th century, there has been endless speculation about its likely purpose and meaning, and a recurring theme has been its possible connections with astronomy and the skies. was it a Neolithic calendar? A solar temple? A lunar observatory? A calculating device for predicting eclipses? Or perhaps a combination of more than one of these? In recent years Stonehenge has become the very icon of ancient astronomy, featuring in nearly every discussion on the subject. And yet there are those who persist in believing that it actually had little or no connection with astronomy at all. A more informed picture has been obtained in recent years by combining evidence from archaeology and astronomy within the new interdiscipline of archaeoastronomy – the study of beliefs and practices concerning the sky in the past and the uses to which people’s knowledge of the skies were put. This leaflet attempts to summarize the evidence that the Stonehenge monument was constructed by communities with a clear interest in the sky above them. Photograph: Stonehenge in the snow. BLADELET POLISH: A LITHIC ANALYSIS OF SPRACKLEN (33GR1585), AN UPLAND HOPEWELL CAMPSITE TYLER R. E. HENEGHAN 107 Pages This thesis builds upon recent investigations at Spracklen (33GR1585), a small upland site in Greene County, Ohio. The presence of non-local cherts, bladelets, and bladelet cores indicates a Middle Woodland Ohio Hopewell occupation. Raw material sourcing, debitage analyses, and a use-wear analysis uncovered that Spracklen functioned as a logistical hunting campsite. Its people utilized bladelets for butchery and hide-working processes. This information provides new insights into Hopewellian life in the uplands and its place within Hopewell community organization. Davis1, Anna C. Roosevelt, William Barnett & J. P. Brown Introduction In the last 50 years, archaeological finds from Amazonia have forced revision of some theories about human evolution. A common assumption had been that human evolution was restricted by environmental limitations which favored slow progression from simple, unspecialized, economically unproductive cultures to complex, specialized, and highly productive ones. This assumption has long influenced interpretations of human evolution in the humid tropics 1 4. It presumed that the first Americans would not have been broad spectrum foragers but instead big game hunters following herds from the Siberian steppes into similar American habitats 8.Only after those megafauna went extinct at the end of the Ice Age were people hypothesized to have developed agriculture in the dry, open vegetation valleys of the Central Andes and Mesoamerica, before finally migrating into the tropical forests and coastal lowlands 9. According to the environmental limitation theory, only cooler agricultural zones fostered conditions that gave rise to civilized achievements like math, astronomy, and calendars exhibited by the Maya, Aztec, and Inca. Hunter gatherers were notpredicted to need, nor deemed capable of devising such cultural achievements. In contradiction to this theory, recent research on Paleoindians shows that the first colonists ventured onto the marine coasts and into the tropical lowlands as soon as they spread through the hemisphere, living by hunting and foraging economies based on fishing and forest products just as early as the big game hunting cultures 4,10 14. -

Exercises in Archaeoastronomy - I - Introduction Amelia Carolina Sparavigna (Department of Applied Science and Technology, Politecnico di Torino) Published in enviro.philica.com Abstract Here it is given the first article of a series proposing exercises in archaeoastronomy. After a short introduction to the series, it is given a sample of exercise. It concerns the study of the orientation of the Stonehenge monument. As shown by this example, the exercises will be well-defined cases, supplemented by solutions, and proposed in the framework of an experimental approach that everybody can repeat. According to the Oxford Dictionary, archaeoastronomy means "the investigation of the astronomical knowledge of prehistoric cultures" [1]. In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, we find a more generic definition: this dictionary tells that is "the study of the astronomy of ancient cultures" [2]. In any case, the etymology is clear.
