The Ancient Egyptian Economy
The ancient Egyptian economy The economy of pharaonic Egypt has been called an ancient command economy, but one should always remember that such modern definitions are not as apt as one would hope for.[2] Still, there was a specialized bureaucracy which monitored or controlled much of its activity, one of the hallmarks of planned economies. On the other hand, in general the officials—as state employees and not as private landowners or managers of state farms—probably did not tell farmers what to grow and these continued to do what their predecessors had done. But they remeasured and reassigned the land after every inundation based on past assignments, assessed the expected crops, collected part of the produce as taxes, stored and redistributed it to those on the state's pay lists. Storage and redistribution were generally done on a local basis. Regional facilities provided produce in case there was a shortfall in one of the local centres. Bureaucrats were also in charge of public works which were mostly religious in character and involved at times tens of thousands of workers and administrators. Egypt was a patchwork of mostly autarkic households and domains. After the taxes were paid, The Saylor Foundation 1 domain administrators and successful householders stored surpluses for future use or exchanged them by barter on the market, an institution the nature of which is remarkably badly understood. The percentage of produce and even manufactured goods which reached markets was probably small. It may have been of marginal importance to the survival of the individual producer, but provided part of the economic base for the developing Egyptian high culture. -

FACT SHEET Tourism and Antiquities Preservation − During the post-2011 tourism downturn, USAID created short- term employment for over 800 Egyptian workers to preserve three historical sites in Luxor, allowing these sites to be accessible for tourism – Luxor’s primary income generator. − USAID field schools have trained over 40 Egyptian archaeologists and several graduates are now employed in ongoing restoration projects. − Lowering groundwater in Old Cairo not only protected an ancient Jewish cemetery, some of the world’s first Christian Churches, and the oldest mosque in Egypt, but the new sewage systems USAID installed also benefited the 140,000 Workers rebuild the Domitian Gate at Medinat Habu on the West Bank of Luxor citizens who live in the area. as part of USAID-funded Chicago House’s epigraphic survey that documents antiquities sites for future generations of tourists and scholars. PHOTO: USAID/JFossler Overview Egypt’s antiquities are not only part of its cultural heritage, but also represent an important economic asset that creates jobs and income. The U.S. government through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided assistance valued at over $100 million since 1995 through 70 major conservation projects spanning the full range of Egypt's long cultural heritage from prehistoric times to the late Ottoman period, and include monuments and masterpieces from every major period. Tourism accounts for about 13 percent of the Egyptian economy and a corresponding amount of employment. The positive impact of tourism can be increased through enhancing linkages with other local economic employment opportunities for people in communities near antiquities sites. -

In Pharaonic Egypt certain species were sacramented (e.g. the sacred ibis, sacred scarab, etc.) or protected as public property because of their economic importance (e.g. papyrus: material for state monopolized paper industry). In recent history laws protected certain species of animals, but protection of natural habitats with their ecological attributes and assemblages of plants and animals (nature reserves) remained beyond the interest of government. The United Nations, with the assistance of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) published lists of nature reserves worldwide, and Egypt was not mentioned in these lists till the late 1970s. -

Both specieswere highly zoophilic. Human blood-feedingby An. sergentii was lesscommon in Bahariya (2.3Vo)and Farafra (1.3%)than in Siwa (I5.37o).A likely explanationis that large domestic animals are held at night inside houses in Bahariya and in Farafra whereas in Siwa, animals are usually housedoutdoors in sheds.These patterns of An. sergentii human-feedingbehavior may contribute to the persistenceof low-level Plnsmodiurn uiuor transmission in Siwa in contrast to negligible or no transmission in Bahariya and Farafra.
