Stingrays Coach Graeme Yeats for two weeks in a row had to work his magic at half time to get a lift from the group, which they responded. The third term was a better quarter for the Stingrays as the team used the ball better going forward, worked harder defensively through the middle and control Cannons for most of the quarter. The wind had picked up dramatically but a slip in concentration in a two minute period allowed the Cannons to score two valu- able goals against the flow. Strong work across the half back line by Robert Hill, Corey Buchan, Ryan Morri- son and Nathan Wright set up numerous counter attack scoring options for the Stingrays with the strong breeze, with Aaron Lees making the most of his opportunities and kicked 3 straight goals. The intensity had lifted and the Stingrays seemed to except the challenge set by Coach Graeme Yeats. At the end of the quarter the mar- gin was 7 points in favour of the Cannons, but the Sting- rays would be defending against the 6-7 goal breeze. Since 1908MPNFL 25 ROC

However, the Werribee version of the Tiger notched up a victory and ironically, in view of the problems with the airline, it was at Avalon Airport Oval and the victim was the Casey Scorpions. The misery of a second consecutive lacklustre perfor- mance in a fortnight for the Scorps was prolonged by a three-minute long melee late in the game. When the dust settled and the final siren sounded, Casey found it- self in arrears by 12 points after trailing by almost eight goals early in the final term. To make things worse, the team is now in grave danger of slipping out of conten- tion for a top four berth. The ugly incident that featured at the end of the game was matched at the beginning by an accidental but sickening clash of heads between Werribee skipper Dom Gleeson and young Luke Tapscott. Play was stopped for several minutes while Gleeson received at- tention before he was eventually stretchered off. The game resumed in a sombre mood marred further by the swirling winds that favoured the end to which Werribee was kicking. The Scorpions defended well to the defensive side of the ground but the Tigers drew first blood. Lynden Dunn responded with Casey’s first but late in the term Werribee scored two quick goals to secure a 13-point lead at the first break. Since 1908MPNFL 35 Netball Tournament Review

Thank you to Ebony Matthews for the great job she has done as Team Man- ager of the U17 team this year and to all of the parents for their en- couragement and support in getting the girls to training and tournament days. Congratulations to all of the girls who have represented the league so well and for playing netball with a great attitude.

MPNFL U17 - With only 8 players for the last tourna- ment of the year, the U17 MPNFL Sharks were going to have to really dig deep to get through. The day started with a match against reigning Central East Zone Association champions, MPNA, and the girls were going to have to pull out all stops if they were go- ing to be successful. The game was played with high intensity and the Sharks came away with a great 2 goal victory. Unfortunately the girls run of success was quickly end- ed with a two goal loss to Frankston, a three goal loss to Latrobe regional team and then a seven goal loss to the Victorian School Girls team. To their credit, the girls turned their run of losses around and finished the tournament with 2 great wins, one by 7 goals and one by 9 goals against Bellarine and MPNFL U13 - Sharks team had a fun day despite the Frankston respectively. weather being far from ideal. Without your support the girls would not get the opportunity to im- prove their skills in tourna- ment scenarios. To the girls, THANK YOU so much for your fun loving nature. You are all fantastic girls in your own individual ways and it has been a pleasure coach- ing each and every one of you.
