Clutch-By-Wire Manual in C8? by Sean Szymkowski (MotorAuthority.com)

Mon., Sep. 24 | 's worst‐kept secret is the C8‐generation mid‐engine Corvette. We've heard a lot of rumors about the upcoming sports car with its engine mounted in the middle, but one has persisted: there won't be a manual transmission. That could change with a new patent General Motors has filed.

The patent was published on Sept. 6 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and details an "electric slave cylinder for manually shifted vehicles." In layman's terms, it's a clutch‐by‐wire system that would replace hydraulic lines. Jalop‐ nik reported last Friday this is exactly that kind of technology that could put a manual transmission in the C8 Corvette.

Typically, a manual transmission features a clutch pedal mounted to the firewall with a clutch master cylinder directly in front of it. A hydraulic line extends from the master cylinder to the clutch slave cylinder to activate the clutch. It's the analog way of doing things, and it's been the norm for decades. GM's patent, however, envisions a sensor mounted on the clutch pedal. The sensor would tell the electronic slave cylinder to move the clutch plate without the need for a hydraulic line to do the act physically.

This kind of solution would forego the need for a hydraulic line to be run to the rear of the car in the C8 Corvette. The electric slave cylinder could also give the computer control of the clutch. This would take away one of the most

Clutch-By-Wire Continued...

(Continued from page 8) mundane and bothersome parts of driving a manual‐equipped car: clutching in and out when stuck in traffic. The patent list this as a benefit.

Critics might say that a clutch‐by‐wire system may not have the feel of a hydraulic clutch. That is yet to be seen and it would depend on how well Chevrolet would program it. However, the electric system would allow for consistent clutch pedal feel throughout the life of the clutch, something that doesn't happen with a hydraulic clutch.

Automakers file to patent solutions often, and there's no guarantee we'll see a manual transmission make its way to the C8 Corvette. But a Corvette without a GM patent for clutch‐by‐wire manual is almost like fries without the shake. Is it needed? No, but it's certainly more transmission system satisfying.

ZR1’s 755-hp V-8 in a Crate by Viknesh Vijayenthiran (MotorAuthority.com)

Wed., Oct. 17 | General Motors' most powerful production engine yet can now be ordered as a crate motor thanks to the folks at Chevrolet Performance. We're talking about the LT5 6.2‐liter supercharged V‐8 that's normally found in the 2019 ZR1. Straight out of the box, this beast of a motor is good for 755 horsepower and 715 pound‐ feet of torque.

The LT5 is among a trio of new crate engines Chevrolet Performance will introduce this month at the 2018 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The others include a ZZ6 5.7‐liter V‐8 and an L96 6.0‐liter V‐8, with the three new additions bringing the tally of V‐8 crate engines offered by Chevrolet Performance to almost 50 units.

Rather than just show the engines on at a stand, Chevrolet Perform‐ ance decided to build some custom rides around them. The LT5 will feature at SEMA in a 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna whose hood de‐ sign mimics the one on the Corvette ZR1 as a nod to its powertrain. The car has also been fitted with front and rear spoilers that pay hom‐ age to the Chevelle Laguna's NASCAR racing heritage.

ZR1 Crate Continued...

(Continued from page 10)

To display the ZZ6 V‐8, Chevrolet Performance has picked a 1967 Chevrolet C10 pickup truck, and for the L96 it picked a 1978 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The C10’s classic style is said to be complemented with modern hot rod touches for the show vehicle, including a low‐ ered suspension, 20‐inch wheels, smoothed and customized bumpers and tailgate, and a custom‐trimmed interior. Its V‐8 crate engine features a fuel injection throttle body mounted in place of the carburetor and is good for 420 hp.

In the Silverado sits an electronically controlled, fuel‐injected V‐8 crate engine good for 360 hp. Inside and out, the pickup is said to look factory‐fresh thanks to a frame‐off restoration that was completed at General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground.

For anyone considering one of Chevrolet Performance's crate engines, most are offered as Connect & Cruise kits which mean [sic] they can easily be connected with matching transmissions and necessary controllers. There are also E‐ROD versions which include emissions equipment that make them eligible for installation in millions of 1995‐and‐earlier ve‐ hicles in California.

This year's SEMA show starts October 30. For full coverage, head to our dedicated hub at  https://www.motorauthority.com/news/sema.

Teamwork Brings Championships by Nigel Dobbie (CorvetteOnline.com)

Thu., Oct. 18 | The final race of the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship took place at on Saturday. The twenty[‐]first edition of the now classic (the idea of Dr. Don , who sadly passed shortly before the race this year) was a celebration of Dr. Don’s vision.

The motto “for the fans” has always been the ideology behind first the and then the IMSA series that followed after the merger with Grand‐Am from 2014 onwards [sic]. The grid walk before the race, driver autograph sessions and ... appearances at the Car Corrals are all initiatives from the “for the fans” ethos and allow the fans to meet and interact with their heroes. All of this was part of Dr. Don Panoz’s vision and without him, there would never have been Petit Le Mans or the whole endurance racing scene as we know it now. Every endurance racing fan owes “Dr. Don” a huge debt of gratitude.

Championships Up For Grabs

Corvette Racing went into the final race of the season knowing that the #3 Corvette C7.R of regular season drivers An‐ tonio Garcia and had a great chance to take the drivers and team championships. The manufacturers

2018 Champions Continued...

(Continued from page 11) title was certainly going to Ford, assuming one of their two Ford GTs took the green flag to start the race (both Fords did start the race).

The only rivals to the #3 Corvette were the #67 Ford GT and again once the green flag dropped these would then be the only two cars left in contention for the drivers / team titles. Antonio Garcia in the #3 Corvette started from second place on the GTLM grid but immedi‐ ately took the class lead on lap one of the ten‐hour race – finish there, and the titles would go to Corvette. Tommy Milner starting the #4 Cor‐ vette also made up places at the start and was soon running in third place. The first round of pit stops saw the #4 Corvette overtake a car in the pits – the black #24 BMW M6 GTLM – this was a theme throughout the race thanks to the slick pit work of both Corvette Racing pit crews – both cars benefited and overtook rivals during the pit stops.

The #912 Porsche running in a retro livery reflecting the 1998 GT1‐era Porsches took the GTLM Class lead thanks to an earlier pit stop and fresher tires. Tire degradation was a theme of the race in all of the classes, but particularly for the GTLM Michelin‐shod runners. There were a number of full course cautions during the race, there were a couple of odd accidents[,] and also some four[‐]wide action on the start / finish straight[.] …[This] always ends badly[,] and in this case a crash ... [claimed] the GTD Class #96 BMW … [as] the innocent victim.

Marcel Fassler, usually the third driver in the #4 Corvette C7.R for the longer endurance events, pulled double‐duty, doing the same role during the race in the #3 C7.R as well.

Hand To Hand And Off Their Backs

The race in all three classes was close and fierce for the entire ten hours. The GTLM Class saw all of the cars lead at some point as cars pitted at different times. It was difficult to predict who had the fastest car and who was likely to win the race during the all important dark final couple of hours. Both Corvettes were fast at the start and were always in contention throughout the race, until disaster struck for the #3 C7.R. Antonio Garcia made a pit stop during a full‐course caution

(Continued on page 13) Page 13 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 25, Iss. 11 | November 2018

2018 Champions Continued...

(Continued from page 12) period at about 6.30 p.m. with just over two and half hours left in the ten‐hour race. All seemed normal as he left the pits on fresh tires, but Antonio seemed to make a rare mistake and spun up the cold tires leaving the sweeping right[‐] hand[,] up hill [sic] pit lane exit. The car slewed onto the grass and hit the concrete wall with a sickening thud and bounced back on the grass.

Every Corvette Racing supporter held their [sic] collective breath and hoped that this wasn’t the end of the #3 C7.R championship. Antonio managed to get the car pointing in the correct direction and despite the right front wheel not spinning and smoke billowing as the tire wore off the rim, he nursed the injured Corvette the full 2.54 mile lap of Road Atlanta back to the pits. Antonio took the car straight to the garage rather than the Corvette pit[,] as this allowed all of the pit crew to descend on the car back in the ga‐ rage area. The crew worked miracles and replaced the whole front of the car[,] which was badly deranged (it had pushed back onto the wheel, the reason it wasn’t turning). Luckily there was no suspension damage[,] and because the rest of the cars were still running behind the safety car, the #3 Corvette pit crew led by Dan Binks managed to turn the car around and get it back on track just two laps down on the GTLM Class leader[,] but now in 9th place out of the class of nine cars. The #67 Ford or [sic] , Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon were [sic] running third, but if they could finish first or second[,] the drivers and team titles would be theirs.

The #912 Porsche then made things worse for Corvette Racing as they [sic] hit one of the other cars and were [sic] im‐ mediately assessed a penalty, promoting the #67 Ford to second place just behind the other Porsche, #911. Antonio Garcia showed no sign that he had given up after the accident and relentlessly chased down the eighth place Ferrari[,] which was also two laps down on the #911 Porsche.

The final ninety minutes of the race saw Antonio take eighth place[,] which was as good as it got for the #3 Corvette, but would it be enough? Their sister car[,] the #4[,] with first Olly Gavin and then Tommy Milner at the wheel[,] did their bit and got in front of the #67 Ford pushing it back down to third place. Then for some reason[,] the Ford seemed to start to struggle and eventually came home fifth. [A]t the end of the race [this] was good enough for the #3 Corvette C7.R to take team title[.] …[T]he drivers title went to Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia[,] repeating their clean sweep of success in 2017. For Corvette Racing[,] it meant that they had now won eight of the nine titles available since 2016, as Tommy Milner and Olly Gavin won all three titles that year.
