C4 is a Used Car Bargain by Rory Jurnecka (Automobilemag.com) Mon., Nov. 02 | By the early 1980s, Chevrolet's Corvette, a once-great icon lovingly regarded as "America's Sports Car," had lost its way. Decades of emissions regulations, economic ups and downs, and a crippling fuel crisis in the late 1970s conspired to neuter one of the most capable performance cars on the planet. When the C3 Corvette bowed out of production in 1982, it was underpowered, overweight and appealed more to boulevard cruisers than backroads blitzers. So, when Chevy's C4 Corvette launched at the end of 1983 as a 1984 model-year car, General Motors had cre- ated a car with the goal of restoring the Corvette name to greatness.

Chief engineer Dave McClellan had directly succeeded Zora Arkus-Duntov, well known as the "Father of the Corvette," in 1975, and he was more than up to the task. The result was that GM once again had a value-conscious but world- beating sports car to sell to the American public. And it was one that would last a lengthy 12 years on the market be- fore being replaced with the C5 Corvette. Thinking about putting a Chevrolet C4 Corvette in your garage while the pric- es are low? Here's what you need to know when it comes to C4 Corvette values, with figures referenced from Hagerty.

(Continued from page 5)

Chevrolet C4 Corvette: The Early Years 1984-90 Average Value: $6,100-$9,000

The earliest Chevrolet C4 Corvettes aren't necessarily the best-looking or best-performing variants, but they are the cheapest to purchase today; average examples in good con- dition are found for well less than $10,000. And let's not forget, the Chevrolet C4 Corvette was MotorTrend's 1984 Car of the Year.

Early C4 Corvettes' 5.7-liter V-8 engine produced a fairly meager 205 horsepower, with a notoriously unreliable Cross- Fire fuel-injection system that was often nicknamed "Cease-Fire." Transmission options were a four-speed automatic or the unusual Doug Nash 4+3 four-speed manual gearbox with electronic overdrive on the higher three gears. A coupe with a Targa-style, one-piece removable top was the only body style initially available. The interior was a chunky, straight-edge design with a fully digital display that was all the rage in the mid-1980s.

In 1985, Tuned-Port Injection replaced the Cross-Fire system, and power increased by 25 hp for 230 hp total. Chevy also softened up the suspension a bit after too many magazine reviews trashed the track-tuned Corvette's ride, though a Z51 heavy-duty performance suspension option was still available for those who didn't mind. Today, Z51 cars can fetch a small premium of $500 or so, and it's worth seeing if the car you're looking at has it.

The 1986 model year brought the return of a Corvette convertible (which paced that year's Indy 500 race in special liv- ery), along with standard ABS and new aluminum cylinder heads that arrived halfway through the year for another 5- horse gain. While values aren't dramatically greater than earlier cars at this stage, convertibles do bring a bit of a pre- mium, with Hagerty placing a good 1986 convertible at $7,600 versus $6,200 for a coupe. By now, more Corvettes were ordered with automatic transmissions than manuals. If you find a manual-equipped car, be prepared to pay at least 10 percent more compared to a similar automatic-equipped example.

In 1987, output increased again, to 240 horsepower, thanks to more efficient roller lifters that replaced the old hydrau- lic versions. A new Z52 suspension option had all the Z51 goodies with softer springs oriented for street use, and the Z52 package was standard on 1988's 35th Anniversary Edition model, which is worth a slight premium at an average $11,400 price. The year 1989 brought a contemporary six-speed manual gearbox supplied by ZF, along with an option- al, body-colored hardtop for convertible models (a $1,000 value today).

Finally, in 1990, the Corvette underwent its mid-cycle interior refresh which dramatically updated the car's cabin. Ana- log gauges returned, but with a large LCD display in the center of the instrument panel that offered speed and some (Continued on page 7) Page 7 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 12 | December 2020

(Continued from page 6) other data in a digital format. The V-8 now produced a fairly healthy 245 hp, but 1990 examples are still very affordable at about $7,200 for your average coupe, and prices hovering around $9,000 for convertibles. Well optioned, low-mileage, manual-equipped cars in show condition can bring well into the teens. The ZR-1 also released this year, but we'll get to that in a bit.

Chevrolet C4 Corvette: The Later Years 1991-96 Average Value: $7,200-$11,400

The year 1991 brought the Chevrolet C4 Corvette's first mid-cycle exterior refresh, with smoothed-over corners and side vents, new square-shaped taillights (derived from the 1990 ZR1), redesigned wheels, and an embossed "Corvette" marking on the rear panel, rather than a glued-on badge. For this model year, power remained at 245 hp, but 1992 brought an all-new, second-generation Chevy small-block engine dubbed LT1. Output was now an impressive 300 hp, enough to really stick it to entry-level supercars like Porsche's 911. In 1993, a 40th Anniversary Edition arrived with Ru- by Red paint and interior, and today such cars can bring a $3,000-$4,000 gain on a coupe and convertible, respectively.

A decade into production, the 1994 C4 Corvette had only minor changes, including a passenger-side airbag and another revised fuel-injection system that had no effect on output, though drivability and emissions improved. In 1995, bigger front brakes from the ZR1 became standard equipment along with softer front springs and Z07 equipment packages. In the C4 Corvette's final year, 1996, manual-equipped cars got a special LT4 5.7-liter V-8 engine with 330 hp, and a Col- lector's Edition model boasted silver paint and special badges (CE versions today are worth an extra $3,000, if you come across one).

Chevrolet C4 Corvette: The Mighty 1990-95 ZR-1 Average Value: $19,000-$22,800

In the late 1980s, the Corvette engineering team partnered with Lotus in the U.K. to produce a true world-beating Cor- vette that could take the fight directly to Europe's best. The result was the 1990 Corvette ZR-1, with a Lotus-designed, Mercury Marine-built LT5 V-8 engine that ditched antiquated pushrods for a true DOHC design with aluminum block and heads. The ZR-1 even featured a special extra key you had to turn in order to release its full 375-hp peak, a full 130 hp more than the standard Corvette of the same year.

Quickly nicknamed "The King of the Hill" by Chevy engineering folks, the ZR-1 cost roughly double the price of a stand- ard Corvette, or around $60,000, and it was only available in a coupe body style. Bigger brakes, wider wheels and tires, (Continued on page 8) Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 8 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 12 | December 2020 News

C4 Bargains (Continued...)

(Continued from page 7) and new square-shaped taillights were all part of the package, along with the ever-important "ZR-1" badge on the rear bumper. In 1993, power increased to 405 hp, but by 1995, the ZR-1 was canceled after Chevy built just 6,939 total ex- amples.

Because the Chevrolet C4 Corvette ZR-1 was often thought of as a future classic, there are plenty of low-miles examples out there still waiting for the appreciation that hasn't ar- rived 30 years later. Keep in mind, the LT5 engine is a very different beast from the standard L98, LT1, and even LT4 V- 8s. Service costs, which can be surprisingly affordable for a standard Corvette, are far more expensive for these Ameri- can supercars.

Chevrolet C4 Corvette: The 1996 Grand Sport Average Value: $23,500

What's the most collectible Chevrolet C4 Corvette? The ZR-1 is a good guess and is easily the highest-performing model of all C4 variants. But in recent years, the 1996 Chevrolet C4 Corvette Grand Sport coupe and convertible have risen to the top of the pecking order when it comes to price.

Built as a homage to the ultra-low production C2 Grand Sport racers of the mid-1960s, the 1996 Corvette Grand Sport was released for the C4's final year in production with the range-topping ZR-1 already out of production. The most rec- ognizable feature of the Grand Sport models is the Admiral Blue paint with a white center stripe and red hash marks on the driver's-side front fender, but there are a bevy of lesser-seen improvements that really distinguish this model from the rest.

Underhood is the 330-hp, 385-lb-ft LT4 -V 8 paired only with a six-speed manual, ZF-built gearbox. Two-piece, five- spoke wheels are ZR-1-size on coupe models, and they necessitated tacked-on rear fender flares to cover them ade- quately for the Department of Transportation. Convertibles stuck with the standard Corvette wheel/tire package.

So why should a 1996 Grand Sport be worth more than a super-powered ZR-1? Consider that while a '96 Grand Sport is down roughly 75 hp on a '95 ZR-1, handling and braking ability is about the same, and the ZR-1's service costs far exceed those of the Grand Sport. Also, Chevrolet built just 1,000 Grand Sport models (810 coupes, 190 convertibles) compared with six times as many -ZR 1s, making them the most difficult C4 Corvette versions to find for sale today. Add in the Grand Sport name's compelling history, and you now have a sought-after collectible. Page 9 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 12 | December 2020

No. 3 C8.R Is IMSA GTLM Champion by Sam McEachern (GMAuthority.com) Mon., Nov. 02 | Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia finished second to Porsche in Sunday’s IMSA WeatherTech race from WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, securing the 2020 IMSA GT Le Mans driver’s championship in the process.

Taylor started from pole in the No. 3 Corvette C8.R and led the first 16 laps before getting passed by the No. 912 Por- sche of . Taylor then came into the pits for the first of the No. 3 team’s three pit stops, with the dusty Laguna Seca circuit causing higher-than-expected tire wear throughout the two hour and 40-minute race. The No. 912 Porsche, meanwhile, was able to make a two-stop strategy work and retained track position after pitting thanks to quick work in the pits from the Core Autosport Porsche crew.

Earl Bamber led the race in the No. 912 Porsche when the only caution of the race bunched up the field with 25 minutes remaining, giving Garcia a chance to attack on the restart. Bamber came out on top in the 19- minute sprint to the finish, however, taking the chequered [sic] flag 0.981 seconds ahead of Garcia to secure Porsche’s second-straight IMSA GTLM victory. While Taylor and Garcia would have preferred to win, the pair believed they did all they could with the relatively new C8.R, which the team is still learning more about each week in its debut season.

“Today was a good race, and we maximized everything we had,” Garcia said. “We lost track position to the 912 at the start, and it was tough to get that back.”

“The safety car mixed things up a little bit and it gave me a chance to get closer, but they were able to open up the gap a little bit,” he added. “The pace was very fast, and I couldn’t use the traffic in my favor. I pres- sured as much as I could, but they didn’t make any mistakes.”

No. 4 Corvette C8.R of Tommy Milner and ran a solid race to take the final podium posi- tion, but were demoted to sixth place in GTLM after IMSA found a problem with the No. 4 car’s diffuser height.

The IMSA WeatherTech Championship will wrap up with the 12 Hours of Sebring on November 13th, which was re- scheduled from earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team is currently locked in a battle with BMW for the IMSA GTLM manufacturer’s title and leads the German manufacture[r] by 18 points. 2021 Production Starts Dec. 8th by Keith Cornett (CorvetteBlogger.com) Thu., Nov. 05 | Looks like the 2021 Corvettes will be here sooner rather than later according to a memo sent this week to Chevrolet dealers. That memo states that 2021 Corvette production will officially start on Tuesday, December 8th.

This news is contrary to our previous estimates of the 2020 Corvette being produced through December, ending just before the Christmas/New Year[’]s break. We’ve reached out to one of our trusted sources who has confirmed the De- cember 8th start day, and more importantly, confirmed that all 2020 orders will be completed by December 7th (barring any further disruptions).

On Wednesday, the plant built 184 Corvettes with the last VIN being 15,444 – leaving 4,737 to be built over the next five weeks. TheCorvette Action Center shared a section of the memo that tells dealers that“ production has stabilized with 2 shifts producing ~186 cars per day.” If that’s the current rate, they will need 25.5 days to complete the remain- ing 2020 orders.

In related 2021 news, dealers are receiving their first allocation numbers for the new model year. Dealers will begin officially submitting the orders to General Motors beginning next Thursday. We’ve been told the allocations are only for the first three months.

What this means is that dealers will know how many 2021 Corvette orders they can submit per cycle over the next three months and can begin contacting their buyers to confirm and submit those orders to GM. If your dealer reaches out to you in the next week, you’re among the first in line for a 2021 Corvette!

J.D. Power 2020 Resale Value Award by Sam McEachern (GMAuthority.com) Fri., Nov. 06 | The Chevy Corvette has taken a segment award in the J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Resale Value Awards, which aim to identify which vehicle makes and models hold the highest percentage of their original resale value after three years of ownership.

The Chevy Corvette won the Midsize Premium Sporty Car segment in the 2020 U.S. Resale Value Awards, beating the Nissan GT-R, which was the runner-up in the category. The Porsche 911, long viewed as a rival to the Corvette, was ranked third in the segment.

J.D. Power says it determined which vehicles held the highest percentage of their original value after three years of ownership by analyzing more than 592,000 dealership wholesale transactions for more than 270 different vehicle mod- els. It then divided the vehicle’s wholesale price by its original purchase price to determine how much it had depreciat- ed in the three years after it was initially sold.

(Continued on page 11) Page 11 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 12 | December 2020

J.D. Power Resale (Continued...)

(Continued from page 10)

“Our transaction database shows which models have the lowest depreciation costs, hence providing consumers with a key component in the total cost of ownership of the vehicle they plan to purchase or sell,” said general manag- er of vehicle valuations at J.D. Power, John Banks. “Currently, wholesale prices remain strong and we expect prices will be greater than pre-virus levels by year’s end. However, given the volatility of the market, it’s more important for consumers to factor this information into their pur- chase decision.”

Because this study examines how much a vehicle depreciates over three years, the Chevy Corvette model referenced in this study is actually the previous-generation C7 Corvette and not the new mid-engine C8 Corvette. Regardless, the Chevy Corvette has always managed to retain a good percentage of its original purchase price on the used market and this should remain true for the mid-engine model, as well.

Canadian C8 Transmissions by Sam McEachern (GMAuthority) Thu., Nov. 12 | The GM St. Catharines Powertrain plant in Ontario will manufacture transmissions for the C8 Cor- vette under the automaker’s new contract with Canadian labor union Unifor.

The union voted to ratify its new contract with GM Canada this week, which includes a $1.3 billion investment for GM Oshawa Assembly to begin building both light and heavy duty pickup trucks at the southern Ontario facility. In addition, the contract will see the automaker invest $109 million in the GM St. Catharines Powertrain plant in order to “in-source new transmission work for the Corvette and support continued V8 engine production,” at the facility.

It’s not clear if this transmission work will relate to the current TR-9080 version of the eight-speed dual-clutch transmis- sion found in the C8 Corvette Stingray, or if it’s for a new version of the transmission for an upcoming variant of the mid-engine sports car. GM says it is in-sourcing work for the transmission, however, which could mean that it is taking over part of the manufacturing process from Tremec, the Wixom, Michigan-based company that currently manufac- tures the quick-shifting DCT.

Chevy has several new C8 Corvette model variants in the works that could require a slightly different style of transmis- sion, including the upcoming flat plane crank V8-powered Corvette Z06 and hybrid Corvette- E Ray.

Canadian Transmissions (Continued...)

(Continued from page 11)

The GM St. Catharines Powertrain plant currently manufactures the GF6 six-speed automatic transmission, however, this transmission is set to go out of production in the coming months. Unifor was therefore hoping to secure new prod- uct for the St. Catharines facility in the pattern bargaining process with GM, which it has now received in the way of the C8 Corvette transmission work.

In addition to the transmissions, the facility is also responsible for making the GM 5.3L L84 V8 and GM 6.2L L87 V8 en- gines, which used in the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, among many other GM products. These engines will continue to be built at the facility for the foreseeable future following the $109 million investment.

TSB Issued For Transmission Glitch by Sam McEachern (GMAuthority.com) Fri., Nov. 13 | General Motors has issued a Technical Service Bulletin for the 2020 Corvette due to a minor software glitch with the transmission control module (TCM). According to the TSB, certain 2020 model-year Chevy Corvette vehi- cles “may have a condition where diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P1967 and/or P1968 may falsely set in the transmis- sion control module due to a software misalignment.”

To remedy this issue, the TSB instructs dealer service departments to update the software in the TCM to a newer ver- sion. Owners who have accepted the terms and conditions to perform over-the-air (OTA) updates can also download this software update themselves at home, negating the need to bring the vehicle into the dealership.

Additionally, all 2020 Corvette and Corvette Convertible models currently sitting on Chevy dealer lots will be updated with the new software to avoid further problems down the line. Dealers will also automatically update the TCM soft- ware when a 2020 Corvette or Corvette Convertible is brought into the dealership during the warranty period for any reason.

Because this is a software update only, no parts are required for the repairs to be performed. All 2020 Corvette and Corvette Convertible models are affected by this issue. It’s worth noting that while GM has issued a TSB for this prob- lem, it does not pose a safety risk to occupants of the vehicle, so there has not been an official federally mandated re- call.

The 2020 Corvette is only available with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is built by Tremec in Wixom, Michigan. GM recently reached an agreement with Canadian labor union Unifor to in-source some of the work for the eight-speed DCT at its St. Catharines Powertrain plant in southern Ontario, though it’s not exactly clear what this work may entail. GT Le Mans Manufacturers Championship by CorvetteRacing.com Sat., Nov. 14 | Chevrolet claimed the GT Le Mans Manufacturers title in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Champi- onship today after the Corvette C8.R started the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. This is Chevrolet’s 13th Manufactur- ers title in IMSA GT competition since 2001 and concludes the -mid engine Chevrolet Corvette C8.R’s inaugural season.

Corvette Racing fielded two of the new Corvette C8.Rs in the 2020 WeatherTech Championship. Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor and the No. 3 Corvette Racing team clinched the GTLM Drivers and Team cham- pionships two weeks ago at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

“The first season for the Corvette C8.R has shattered all of our expectations,” said Mark Reuss, GM president. “The suc- cess of the Corvette Racing team wouldn’t be possible without the close link between the crew and the Corvette engi- neering team. It has been great to watch these two teams work closely together to learn from each other. I can’t wait to see what next season brings.”

The mid-engine C8.R and 2020 Corvette Stingray were developed simultaneously, and the race car and production vehi- cle share more technology and parts than any previous-generation Corvette. When initial Corvette C8.R design and de- velopment work began more than five years ago, Corvette Racing engineers worked closely alongside Corvette produc- tion personnel. Within the last 18 months, track testing began with a heavy emphasis on wind tunnel and simulation testing.

Chevrolet swept the three full-season GTLM titles for the third time in five years. This is only the second time that a first-year Corvette race car has won an IMSA championship. In 2005, Corvette C6.R won championship during its first season.

Corvette Racing captured six victories leading into Sebring. Garcia and Taylor gave the Corvette C8.R its first victory at Daytona International Speedway in July, Corvette Racing’s 100th IMSA win. Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner won the next race in the No. 4 Corvette C8.R with Garcia and Taylor in second – the first -1 2 finish for the C8.R.

In addition, the Corvette C8.R has claimed seven pole positions and posted fastest GTLM race lap at five events. Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 14 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 12 | December 2020 News

Tandy Set to Replace Gavin at Corvette by John Dagys (Sportscar365.com) Sun., Nov. 15 | Nick Tandy appears set to replace Oliver Gavin as a full- season driver in Corvette Racing’s lineup in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship next year.

Multiple sources have confirmed to Sportscar365 that the longtime Porsche factory driver will make the switch to GM, taking over driving duties of the No. 4 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R alongside Tommy Milner for the 2021 season.

It comes as the latest high-profile driver move within the WeatherTech Championship paddock and amid Porsche’s exit from the GTLM class.

Tandy, who won the overall in 2015 as well as all other major enduros with the German manufac- turer, claimed what is likely his final victory as a Porsche driver in Saturday’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Sportscar365 understands the 36-year-old Englishman had been in the mix for Corvette seat over the past few months, with a deal having been recently secured.

A Corvette Racing spokesperson declined comment when reached by Sportscar365, stating they will [announce] their 2021 lineups at a later date. No word has been given on when that announcement will be made.

Cracked C7 Wheel Lawsuit Dismissed by Keith Cornett (CorvetteBlogger.com) Tue., Nov. 17 | Chalk up a victory for General Motors in one of the lawsuits filed against the carmaker alleging cracked, bent, or warped rims on certain C7 Corvettes, including 2015-19 Z06s and 2017-19 Grand Sports.

In the suit, the owner of a 2018 Z06 had charged that GM has known about the alleged problem of warped rims but concealed information even as Corvette drivers continue to file complaints.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California – Nardizzi, et al., v. General Motors LLC.

The Corvette owner says that he bought his Z06 from a GM dealer, then took it directly to a third-party auto shop to have the rims coated by a third-party wheel finisher who alleges in a video that the rims were already bent by then. The owner says he then had to pay $7,500 for replacement wheels from a third-party and asked that GM cover the cost under warranty. After steady complaining by the owner, GM finally agreed to pay $1,200 of the $7,500, even though a judge later pointed out that the warranty requires any repairs to be requested by the owner and then completed at a Chevrolet dealership.

In response to the suit, GM filed a motion to dismiss for several reasons, including the argument that the plaintiff never stated a plausible claim. (Continued on page 15) Page 15 AllentownCorvetteClub.org News ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 27, Iss. 12 | December 2020

Wheel Lawsuit (Continued...)

(Continued from page 14)

While the Corvette owner alleged that GM sold and leased cars “with wheels that were defective, requiring repair or replacement within the warranty period, and refusing to honor the express warranty by repairing or replacing, free of charge, the wheels,” GM responded that the owner failed to allege any defect in materials or workmanship, as op- posed to a defect in the design. GM says its warranty applies to “any vehicle defect, not slight noise, vibrations, or oth- er normal characteristics of the vehicle due to materials or workmanship during the warranty period” and claimed that the defects actually covered are clarified by the key phrase, “due to materials or workmanship.”

Judge Carmac J. Carney agreed with GM that its warranty applies to any defect due to materials or workmanship during the warranty period but not to defects involv- ing “slight noise, vibrations, or other normal characteristics of the vehicle.”

To qualify for breach of express warranty, the judge said a plaintiff has to allege the defect is due to materials or workmanship but he said the Corvette owner instead alleged that the wheels suffered from an inherent defect and were defectively de- signed.

The judge also dismissed a breach of an implied warranty claim, explaining that under the Song-Beverly Act, a plaintiff has to allege a fundamental defect rendering the product unfit for its ordinary purpose. In this case, he said the plaintiff failed to allege his car had a persistent defect that couldn’t be solved through repair or re- placement of an isolated component.

Carney dismissed other claims alleging deceptive practices and fraud, saying that the plaintiff failed to allege GM had knowledge of the alleged Corvette rim defects before he bought the car. “To successfully allege a manufacturer was aware of a defect, a plaintiff is typically required to allege how the defendant obtained knowledge of a specific defect prior to the plaintiff’s purchase of the defective product,” the judge said.

While the Corvette owner alleged that GM had to know about cracked wheels based on complaints made to the gov- ernment and other forums, Carney said 30 of the complaints had been filed after the plaintiff bought his Corvette. Only 11 customer complaints had been made before his purchase, with some of those suggesting driver errors or road con- ditions were to blame for the cracked, bent, or warped rims. C8 a Car and Driver’s 10Best Again by Alex Sommers (CorvetteBlogger.com) Wed., Nov. 18 | Automotive awards season is officially upon us and, in an encore of its first rotation around the sun, the eighth-generation Corvette has earned a spot on Car and Driver’s coveted 10Best list.

Just as they did last year, C&D has morphed their 10Best Cars and 10Best SUVs and Trucks awards into one, even more competitive array of the “smartest, most entertaining vehicles that you can buy.”

Car and Driver’s scientific method for 10Best starts with a group of more than 300 new vehicles (whose MSRPs fall under their $90,000 cap) that is narrowed down to “the most promising” and “significantly changed” examples of the year. Unlike their arch-rivals at Motor Trend, C&D also allows last year’s victors a chance to defend their title.

This extensive vetting process brought forward the 57 brightest stars in the affordable new-car universe. The whole gang was put through a two-week evaluation that placed emphasis on each vehicle’s fun factor, value proposition, and how well it achieved its core mission. When the dust settled in this final mega-test, the mid-engine Corvette Stingray emerged as the first name on the list of ten champions (it could also be sorted alphabetically by manufacturer, but we think that is just a coincidence!).

The Stingray didn’t only win over C&D’s staff by being a “performance value for all time,” but they were also amazed by “its refinement and versatility.” Saying of their test car, “This is a supercar that can handle a 100-mile commute. It’s also a coupe that’s a part-time convertible.” After even more fawning over all of the things that a C8 can do while also delivering on its promise of being “99th percentile quick,” writer, Ezra Dyer concludes with a phrase that needs to go directly into Chevrolet’s marketing materials, “you can’t do that in a supercar.”

Joining the C8 in the back-to-back winners circle this year are the Honda Accord, Porsche 718 Cayman/Boxter twins, Porsche Macan, Mazda CX-5, RAM 1500 (with a special shout-out to the Hellcat-powered TRX), Toyota Supra, VW Golf GTI and Jetta GLI, and Kia Telluride. The lone newcomer to the group is the Genesis GV80. Korea’s luxury SUV slides into the spot previously held by the Jeep Gladiator.

This is the 22nd time that America’s sports car has earned a 10Best nod. That mark ties (or keeps pace with) the Boxter and Cayman for third place on the historical list. The ‘Vette and Porsche’s mid-engine offerings only trail the BMW 3/4 Series that reigned for 23 straight years between 1992 and 2014 before hitting its current extended rough patch and the Accord’s record 35 inclusions (’83-’95 and ’98-’21!) in total 10Best wins.

So, just as we have approximately 87 times in the past year, we here at Corvette Blogger would like to congratulate GM on this, most recent, recognition of the monumental achievement that is the C8 Corvette while we remind the brand’s faithful that, somehow, this iteration of the Crossed Flags is just getting started!

2020 C8 Final Production Stats by Mitch Talley (CorvetteBlogger.com) Mon., Nov. 23 | The National Corvette Museum has provided the official production statistics for the 2020 Corvette model year which provides us with a great opportunity to see how owners optioned their mid-engine Corvettes.

Production of the model year is expected to continue another couple of weeks before concluding on or by December 7th. As the final orders are locked in, Chevrolet’s official count for the model year will be 20,368. This total does include those pre-production saleable units that were built before customer orders began in February.

The breakdown of the 2020 models was 82.4% Coupe (16,787) and 17.6% Convertible (3,581) and the Z51 Performance Package accounted for 76% (15,476) of all Corvettes produced.

The 3LT package was the most popular which always is the case during the initial new model rollouts. A total of 46.8% of buyers went with the 3LT across both models with 39.1% choosing the 2LT and only 14.4% selecting the base 1LT trim package.

The exterior colors ranked by popularity are:

1. Torch Red – 5,137 (25%); 2. Arctic White – 3,098 (15%); 3. Black – 2,383 (11.7%); 4. Sebring Orange – 1,377 (6.8%); 5. Elkhart Lake Blue – 1,369 (6.7%); 6. Rapid Blue – 1,243 (6%); 7. Ceramic Matrix Gray – 1,216(5.97%); 8. Blade Silver – 1,130 (5.55%); 9. Shadow Gray – 1,111(5.45%); 10. Long Beach Red – 1,068 (5.25%); 11. Accelerate Yellow – 688 (3.38%); 12. Zeus Bronze – 548 (2.69%)

The NCM also provided a chart ( https://www.corvettemuseum.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ 2020MY_CORVETTE_VolumeByColorsMatrix11122020.pdf) showing how the various models were outfitted with exteri- or and interior color totals and combinations. From that, we can see some rare combinations. For example, only one Corvette was painted in Accelerate Yellow and had a two-tone blue interior. Two Torch Red cars selected the two-tone Blue as well and two Elkhart Lake Blue and three Rapid Blue cars featured the Morello interior.

Some other interesting options include the E60 Front Lift which was selected by 58% of owners (11,899), FE4 Magnetic Ride was selected by 54% (10,991), and the GT2 seats were the most popular choice at 12,548 (61.6%).

The most popular wheels were the Carbon Flash Open-Spoke wheels with 41.7% of buyers selecting the black version vs 36.9% going with the Bright Silver versions. The Black Trident wheels were optioned by 2,788 buyers (13.7%) while 2,420 selected the Spectra-Gray Trident wheels (11.9%) and 1,924 buyers selected the Sterling Silver Trident Wheels (9.4%).

NCM Ambassador’s Corner by Al Fuller (‘20) Hello again fellow AACCers!

Welcome to a holiday season unlike any in recent memory. Things are definitely different this year, but with a vaccine (and maybe multiple options) in sight, we can hope for a far better 2021 than the restrictive 2020 we’re all trying to make it through. ZORAPID is tucked away for the Winter, snugly under her “blanket;” and Andrea and I – like most all of you I’m sure – are focusing on preparing for the season at hand. We want to wish you all a safe, healthy, enjoyable and prosperous holiday season. For those that celebrate, MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY CHA- NUKKAH! I can share that this Thanksgiving holiday provided me a much needed respite. I was able to slow down and focus on the important things in life – our family and our friends. It was refreshing to just stay home, relax, and realize how much good there is in this world, despite all the negativity that is thrust upon us. I needed that. So, my wish for each and every one of you is that you have a holiday season that is what it is supposed to be: joy-filled and a reminder of just how much good we have in our lives. Take some time – literally – to slow down, enjoy the holiday lights in your (and other) neighborhoods, children’s laughter, possibly reconnect with those that may have been missing your friendship and conversation, and tell those who are important to you that you appreciate them. I like to think this is the opportunity we are presented with in 2020, let’s take advantage of it and make some lemonade with our lemons. Every opportunity I get, when I am asked “why Corvette?”; I am pretty emphatic explaining that “it’s not the cars, it’s the PEOPLE!” We contin- ue to prove that even during these challenging times, I am proud to be part of this community in so many variations. Thanks to all who make this hobby what it is and help so many others in the process.

On the Corvette front, there is not a lot of news as we’re now in the “off-season” – BGAP appears to be on track to build all the 2020 models GM committed to over the next couple of weeks. I was fortunate enough to observe one of our board members taking delivery of his new C8 at Faulkner and know how much he is loving it! Congratulations Joel [Dean]! 2021 production starts pretty much with the ending of 2020 production . . . and I still expect that the 2021 model year will sell out. Soon, we hope to be witnessing an official unveiling of a future (unconfirmed as of now) Z06 model C8. The NCM continues with the same lineup of exhibits, and there is still time to order Corvette-related merchandise for Christmas/Holiday giving, as I discussed last month.

Stay safe everyone, and again, all our best to you and yours this holiday season!

Save the wave,

Al Fuller

NCM News & Events Corvette Donated In Memory of Vietnam Veterans Thu., Nov. 12 | On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 102 years ago today, World War I came to an end when Germany signed an armistice agree- ment with Allied forces. In 1919 this day would become known as Armistice Day to commemorate the ending of WWI and honor those who fought. In 195[4], Presi- dent Eisenhower, a veteran himself, signed a bill that was passed by Congress offi- cially changing the designation to Veterans Day in honor of American Veterans from all wars. In recognition of this day, Dr. Harold (also a veteran) and Anne Rumzek donated their 1970 Corvette in remembrance of the veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

NCM News & Events Continued... Award-Winning 1961 Corvette Donated Thu., Nov. 19 | As a member of NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society), it was only natural that Howard Maxwell would become in- volved with the National Corvette Museum, even years before there was a physical mu- seum. A Founding (now Lifetime) Member since 1991 originally from Reading, Pa. and currently living in Ocala, Fla., Howie is not only a Corvette enthusiast, but also a judge for NCRS and Bloomington Gold.

“As a kid, like many others, I couldn’t afford any Corvettes. A friend of mine was a phar- macist and he had a 1961 from new, and I had the chance to drive it. That put a desire in me to someday own a ’61. So, when I saw this car and realized it was original and had only the one owner, it certainly intrigued me. Long story short, I bought it.”
