It is also designated as the World Day of Prayer for Peace. There can be no better way to start the New Year than to honor our Blessed Mother and pray with her for peace in our world. As we pray together today at God’s invitation, let us be mindful of how the Holy Mother of God cares for the Church and the world that her Son died to save. With gratitude for this past year and with hope for all that we will accomplish in the year to come, I keep each member of our parish family in my daily prayers. Gentle and Loving Loving God, who is revealed through the simple birth of your Son Jesus, in the gentle and loving touch of Mary and the secure and protecting touch of Joseph, help us to know you this day. May our lives find a home with you, and our families be secure under your protection. May the blessings of home, parents, family, and community be a spark of new life and profound love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. MARKING THE LINTLE Simply mark the lintel (door frame) with chalk, I have suggested this family activity the last few years. inscribing first a cross V, the Cross of salvation, then The “Marking of the Door Frame.” is one that every the year and the letters CMB (the initial of Caspar, family member, from the youngest to the oldest, can Melchior and Balthasar, the names of the three magi take part. I hope it becomes a tradition in your not recorded in Scripture, but found in 9th century family, one that your children can continue when it is records). The inscription also stands for Christus their turn to wield the chalk. This tradition comes Mansionem Benedicat, which means “Christ, bless from ancient times, but still seems to resonate in this home.” The inscription for this year would be: those of us living in 2017. Its purpose is simply to ask God’s blessing on all those who live within our home or visit. The theme for National Migration Week 2017 draws attention to Pope Francis' call to create a culture of encounter, and in doing so to look beyond our own needs and wants to those of others around us. In the homily given at his first Pentecost as pope, he emphasized the importance of encounter in the SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY Christian faith: "For me this word is very OF THE LORD important. Encounter with others. Why? SUNDAY, JANUARY 8 Because faith is an encounter with Jesus, and we Saturday Vigil Mass: 4:30PM must do what Jesus does: encounter others." Sunday Masses: 7:30AM, 9:00AM, 10:45AM, 12:15PM, 5:00PM With respect to migrants, too often in our contemporary culture we fail to encounter them as persons, and instead look at them as others. We do not take the time to engage migrants in a meaningful way, but remain aloof to their presence and suspicious of their intentions. During this National Migration Week, let us all take the opportunity to engage FEAST OF THE BAPTISM migrants as children of God who are worthy of OF THE LORD our attention and support. MONDAY, JANUARY 9 MASSES: 6:45AM, 8:30AM POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY Christian Unity That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity.
