Elementary shared this great community activity: “We asked Dr. Cox to come talk to our first graders because we have been learning about the different roles people have in the community. Every week we are having a different community helper come in and talk to the students about what their role in the community is, how their job helps our community, what kind of technology and tools they use in their job every day, and what can our first graders start doing now to prepare themselves for that job when they get older. We then have the students practice their questioning and speaking skills by asking questions about the job.” Around Our Schools Shout Outs October, 2012 Volume II Graham Middle Ron Villines, Principal Mr. Villines shared these photos of a recent visit by very important Graham guests. Around Our Schools Shout Outs October, 2012 Volume II Maddie Braxton Williams High Check out the event happening this weekend that is part of a Williams High senior’s graduation project. Maddie Braxton completed her graduation project paper about Kangaroo Care and for her product, she is hosting a benefit concert, “Bands for Babies.” All the proceeds of the event will be given to the Alamance Regional Medical Center Special Care Nursery to support Kangaroo Care. What is Kangaroo Care? Kangaroo Care is a method in which parents, usually the mother holds the baby with skin to skin contact. This technique is typically used with babies born premature. It has been proven to help with development and creates physiological and psychological warmth. In areas where incubators are not available, the act of Kangaroo Care has saved the lives of babies. Maddie says: “My mom did Kangaroo Care when I was born 9 weeks early, so I am very passionate about this cause.” The event will be held at Starlight Meadow on October 14th from 2-6pm. Three bands which include Civil Defense, Graymatter, and Too Far Gone will be performing. There will be food and fun for all ages so bring a chair or a blanket, enjoy some great music and have fun all for a great cause! Monetary donations are welcome. As part of our lesson, the students watched a video and created small booklets describing many of the water problems. Part of the assignment was that students had to show their booklet to their parents and come up with some possible solutions.
