After winning 21 of their previous 24 European home games, Club Atlético de Madrid were shocked to lose to SL Benfica on matchday two and will be looking to put matters right against FC Astana. Match background Atlético • The 2014 finalists began their sixth group stage campaign with a 2-0 victory at Galatasaray AŞ but then succumbed 2-1 at home to SL Benfica, their first defeat at the Vicente Calderón since a 2-0 reverse to FC Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 in February 2013. • Atlético are taking part in the competition for the third year in a row – the first time they have achieved that feat. This is the first time they have faced a Kazakhstan side. • They put together four successive home victories in last season's tournament, winning their three group games in Madrid with a 10-0 aggregate score. They overcame Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1-0 at home in the round of 16 to draw the tie 1-1 on aggregate, winning the ensuing penalty shoot-out 3-2. • The Rojiblancos then drew 0-0 at home to city rivals Real Madrid CF in the quarter-finals before bowing out 1-0 on aggregate. Astana • Astana, the first ever representatives from Kazakhstan to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage, lost 2-0 at Benfica on matchday one and then drew 2-2 at home with Galatasaray. • Participation was secured with a 2-1 aggregate victory against APOEL FC in the play-off round. Nemanja Maksimović's dramatic equaliser six minutes from time in Cyprus proved decisive after Baurzhan Dzholchiyev had sealed a 1-0 first-leg success. • In the third qualifying round Stanimir Stoilov's side won 4-3 at home against HJK Helsinki after a goalless away leg. In the previous round they defeated NK Maribor, winning 3-1 at home to overturn a 1-0 away reverse. • Astana's only previous experience of tackling Spanish opponents was a sobering one – losing 3-0 at home and 4-0 away to Villarreal CF in last season's UEFA Europa League play-offs. Coach and player links • Antoine Griezmann scored in France's 3-0 win over Kazakhstan in the Astana Arena in a UEFA Under-21 European Championship qualifier on 8 June 2012. Dmitri Shomko, Baurzhan Dzholchiyev, Aleksei Schetkin, Abzal Beysebekov and Yeldos Akhmetov all played for the hosts. • Tiago played in Portugal's 3-0 defeat of Kazakhstan in a UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier in Coimbra on 15 November 2006. Match facts Atlético • Atlético won five of their first six games in all competitions this season but were without a victory in three before Sunday's 2-0 win at Real Sociedad de Fútbol, Yannick Carrasco scoring the second with his first goal for the club. • Fernando Torres is on 99 goals for Atlético. • Luciano Vietto's first goal for the club earned the Rojiblancos a 1-1 Liga draw against Real Madrid on 4 October. • Óliver Torres scored and Saúl Ñíguez was sent off as Spain Under-21s drew 1-1 with holders Sweden on 13 October in 2017 European qualifying. • Diego Godín – who has not scored at club level since 3 January – was on target in Uruguay's 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying triumphs over Bolivia (2-0) and Colombia (3-0). • Koke (hamstring) had missed Atlético's previous four matches before playing 90 minutes at Real Sociedad. Astana • Patrick Twumasi serves the third of a four-game ban imposed for his red card in the third qualifying round second leg against HJK. • Astana's 1-0 success at FC Atyrau on 4 October was their first win in six matches in all competitions. • Stoilov's men play league leaders Kairat Almaty on 22 November in the Kazakh Cup final but before that face them next Sunday. • Dzholchiyev missed Kazakhstan's UEFA EURO 2016 qualifiers against Netherlands and Latvia with an arm injury

8 Club Atlético de Madrid - FC Astana Wednesday 21 October 2015 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Estadio Vicente Calderón, Madrid Head coach Club Atlético de Madrid: Diego Simeone Date of birth: 28 April 1970 Nationality: Argentinian Playing career: CA Vélez Sarsfield, AC Pisa, Sevilla FC, Club Atlético de Madrid, FC Internazionale Milano, SS Lazio, Club Atlético de Madrid, Racing Club Coaching career: Racing Club, Club Estudiantes de la Plata, CA River Plate, CA San Lorenzo, Calcio Catania, Racing Club, Club Atlético de Madrid • Launched career as a combative midfielder with Vélez Sarsfield and was a full Argentinian international at 18, making debut in a July 1988 friendly against Australia; went on to play in three FIFA World Cups and retired as Argentina's most-capped player (106 appearances, 11 goals). Moved to Italy in 1990 to join Pisa; two years later he left for Sevilla, where he played under Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo and – for one season – alongside Diego Maradona. • Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours to add to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993) plus the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup with Argentina. • Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italia double in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a second spell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club. • Started coaching career with Racing Club and won Argentinian titles with Estudiantes (2006 Apertura) and River Plate (2008 Clausura); brief spells at San Lorenzo, Italian club Catania and Racing (again) preceded his appointment in December 2011 at Atlético. • Led Atletico to victory in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club and to a Copa del Rey final triumph over Real Madrid CF in 2013. A year later, Atlético held off FC Barcelona and Madrid to win their first league title since 1996, although they lost to Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. Simeone won the Supercopa de España at the start of the next season, which ended with Atlético finishing third in the Liga. FC Astana: Stanimir Stoilov Date of birth: 13 February 1967 Nationality: Bulgarian Playing career: FC Haskovo, PFC Levski Sofia (three times), Fenerbahçe SK, PFC CSKA Sofia, SC Campomaiorense, PFC Slavia Sofia Coaching career: PFC Levski Sofia, PFC Litex Lovech, Bulgaria (twice), PFC Botev Plovdiv, FC Astana • A stellar name at Levski, Stoilov had three spells at the club, starting and ending his senior career there and amassing four league titles plus five Bulgarian Cups. • Started out as a midfielder but later moved up front and, towards the end of his career, into defence. Scored three goals in 14 international appearances for Bulgaria, two of them on his debut in September 1992 in a friendly against Turkey, where he had just arrived to play for Fenerbahçe. • Captain and assistant trainer at Levski in his later years, he was appointed head coach in 2004. In four seasons in charge won two league titles, two national cups and became the first man to lead a Bulgarian club into the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. • Stood in as caretaker national team coach in June 2007 following Hristo Stoichkov's resignation. Sacked by Levski in May 2008, he joined Litex and took them to victory in the Bulgarian Cup, having in the meantime also been appointed Bulgaria coach. Left Litex in August 2009 to concentrate solely on the national side but missed out on 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification and resigned in September 2010. • Took over the Botev Plovdiv reins in winter 2012 and led the side into the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round in 2013/14 as well as steering them to the Bulgarian Cup final. He then joined Astana in June 2014 and oversaw the club's maiden Kazakh title later that year, before navigating their route through 2015/16 UEFA Champions League qualifying to seal Kazakhstan's first ever group stage spot.
