We had several tour highlights on this recent tour but certainly the displaying Great Bustards, a majestic pair of Eastern Imperial Eagle, the mighty Saker, the handsome Red-footed Falcon, a hunting Peregrine, the shy Capercaillie, the elusive Little Crake and Corncrake, the enigmatic Ural Owl, the declining White-backed Woodpecker, the skulking River and Barred Warblers, a rare Sombre Tit, which was a write-in, the fluty Red-breasted and Collared Flycatchers and the stunning Wallcreeper will be long remembered. We recorded a total of 214 species on this short tour, which is a respectable tally for Europe. Amongst these we had 18 species of raptors, 6 species of owls, 9 species of woodpeckers and 15 species of warblers seen! Spain holds Europe’s largest populations of many species, including Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca), Great (Otis tarda) and Little (Tetrax tetrax) Bustards, Eurasian Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus), Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), and Black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura). All of these can be seen within Madrid Province, the fo- cus of this article, all within an hour’s drive of downtown. The area holds birding interest year-round. Many of northern Europe’s birds winter in Spain, including Common Cranes (which pass through Madrid in migration), an increasing number of over-wintering European White Storks (Ciconia ciconia), and a wide variety of wa- terfowl. Spring comes early: Barn Swallows appear by February, and many Africa-wintering water birds arrive en masse in March. Other migrants, such as European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster), Common Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos), and Golden Oriole (Oriolus ori- olous), however, rarely arrive before April.

    Kyrgyzstan, July – August 2019 Oscar Campbell This report outlines a short but reasonably wide-ranging visit to Kyrgyzstan, a spectacular and bird-rich country but one that is somewhat under-represented in terms of birding trip reports. We had a stopover here en-route back from Mongolia and found Kyrgyzstan to be even more impressive scenically than Mongolia, with an excellent range of top Central Asian montane and wetland birds. We also appreciated being able to rent a car and charge around on our own, stopping wherever we felt like and planning the route and locations ourselves, something that is not nearly so readily done in Mongolia, nor in neighbouring Kazakhstan. I have been lucky enough to visit both Uzbekistan and Kaz in recent years, including at nearly peak season for breeding birds (June and early July) but still found late summer birding in Kyrgyzstan to be exhilarating, to say the least. Basic route We had 8 ½ days in total; having a spent a day in Bishkek visiting the city on the outbound journey, we didn’t bother spending time there on the way back. Instead, the overall route was: 1 Ala Archa (half day) 2 Suusamir Valley 3 Song-Kul lake (two nights) 4 Tong, along the south side of Issyk-Kul, 5 Jyrgalan (2 nights) and finally 6 Balychky (north west edge of Issyk-Kul) before one night back in 7 Bishkek before taking a flight out early next morning. It is based on a first draft by WCMC in 1998. Except for Birds (Birdlife International, 1994), no assessment is yet available on the conservation status of Vertebrate species at European level, while Red Books exist at national level in almost all European countries. On the other hand, a global list of threatened species is published and maintained up-dated by IUCN according to well defined criteria (IUCN, 2000). The present assessment is a first attempt to identify the most threatened Vertebrates species at European level, building upon a first analysis of the list of globally threatened species present in Europe (WCMC, 1998) and taking into account the most recent available overviews on European species distribution provided by the various European atlas committees (European Bird Census Council; Societas Europaea Herpetologica, Societas Europea Mammalogica).

Ellie Dyer, 4th November 2015 2 Abstract Alien species are a major component of human-induced environmental change, yet spatial and temporal variation in the drivers of their introduction, and their subsequent distribution and richness, are poorly understood. Here, I present a global analysis of the drivers of this variation for a major animal group, birds (Class Aves), using the newly-created Global Avian Invasions Atlas (GAVIA) database. GAVIA includes information on introduction successes and failures, enabling me to examine the effect of colonisation pressure (the number of species introduced) on alien bird distributions. A description of the GAVIA database is given in Chapter 2, with details on its scope and sources, data collation and validation, and the production of alien range maps. Chapter 3 focuses on the early stages of the invasion pathway, and shows that historical introductions tend to originate in Europe, were driven by the global movements of British colonialism, and involved species deemed useful. Modern introductions, in contrast, tend to originate in Southeast Asia and Africa, are driven by factors associated with wealth, and involve species found in the pet trade.

    Pleske’s Ground Jay, a most unusual corvid, is endemic to the interior deserts of Iran (Mark Beaman) IRAN 30 APRIL – 13 MAY 2017 TOUR REPORT LEADERS: MARK BEAMAN and ALI ALIESLAM It was great to get back to Iran again. What a brilliant country this is for birding, and so varied and scenic as well, never mind the hospitality of the Iranians, a much misunderstood people (so many of us conflate Iranians with their government of course). This was definitely our most successful Iran tour ever in terms of the number of specialities recorded, among a grand total of 251 bird species (as per current IOC taxonomy) and 13 species of mammal. Among the greatest highlights were the endemic Pleske’s Ground Jay, the near-endemic Caspian Tit and the restricted-range Sind Woodpecker, Mesopotamian Crow, Grey Hypocolius, Black-headed Penduline Tit, Basra Reed Warbler, Hume’s Whitethroat, Hume’s Wheatear, Red-tailed Wheatear, Iraq Babbler and Afghan Babbler, as well as Caspian Snowcock, See-see Partridge, Macqueen’s Bustard, White-cheeked Tern, Pallid Scops Owl, Egyptian Nightjar, Steppe Grey Shrike, Plain Leaf Warbler, Radde’s Accentor, Dead Sea Sparrow, Pale Rockfinch, Asian Crimson-winged Finch and Grey-necked Bunting, not to mention Indo- 1 Birdquest Tour Report: Iran 2017 www.birdquest-tours.com Sind Woodpecker is only found in Persian Baluchistan and Pakistan (Mark Beaman) Pacific Hump-backed Dolphin, Persian Ibex, Goitred Gazelle and Onager (Asiatic WildAss). The tour started with a flight from Tehran southeastwards to the city of Bandar Abbas, situated on the shores of the Strait of Hormuz in Persian Baluchistan.
