He first read Baudelaire in 1946 at the age of 20 and ever since, he has, time and again, timelessly returned to him. He says “I have learnt from Baudelaire that modernism is synonymous with urbanism and antonymous with pastoralism, and, therefore, in poetry there is no modernity if there is no city in it.” Between 1946 and 1956, Mr. Bhagat wrote ‘Pravaldweep’ (Coral Island), a group of 16 poems about Mumbai, for which Baudelaire was a perennial source of inspiration. Mr. Bhagat says that a modern poet employs urban imagery elevated to the first intensity and detached irony ending in profound charity. Language of interaction: English, Gujarati 27 January 2012 – 7:00 pm Gujarati Sahitya Parishad “Cyrano thi Shukdan” by Mr. Chinu Modi Mr. Modi is a renowned poet, gazalkar and playwright. His Gujarati adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s very famous “Cyrano de Bergerac” is known as “Shukdan”. This is a fabulous attempt of not only adapting a story in a different cultural context but also of matching the physical qualities of the original characters with the adapted ones that everything seems to be very natural, very original. Mr. Modi will also speak of existentialism, dadaism and surrealism which generated in France and have laid a great impact on the literary current of Gujarat. Since then, the 3 musicians have released 7 albums and have toured over the world for last 16 years. Didier Malherbe | Born in 1943, Didier Malherbe started on saxophone when he was 13, after hearing Charlie Parker's Bloomdido. A trip to India and Afghanistan in the early sixties introduced him to ragas, modal music and the bamboo flute. His third album Zeff was released in October 1992, for the label Tangram. The title of the album is derived from Zephyr, and is also the name he gave to a plastic, circular bass flute which he played for Vangelis on the soundtrack of Ridley Scott's movie "1492 Conquest of Paradise" as well as on the daily jingles for France Television 3. Having spent many years absorbing musical and rhythmic influences from around the world, Didier developed an avid interest in collecting exotic instruments, each of which offers the opportunity to explore and embrace new styles of playing and approaches to composing. Loy Ehrlich | Born in Paris in 1950, In the 80’s he plays with Touré Kounda , Bill Laswell, Ginger Baker , Youssou N'Dour , Peter Gabriel. In the 90’s he met Jon Hassel and Steve Shehan , works with John Lurie, Amina, Geoffrey Oryema and Wasis Diop. Bio information: FORGAS BAND PHENOMENA Title: L’OREILLE ÉLECTRIQUE [The Electric Ear] (Cuneiform Rune 447) Format: CD / DIGITAL www.cuneiformrecords.com FILE UNDER: JAZZ / JAZZ-ROCK “...there's always a logical and organic flow, despite knotty and sometimes orchestral transitions.... Its combination of singable themes and rock rhythms will appeal to...all fans of improvisation within a richly composed context.” – All About Jazz “Jazz-fusion, yes, but with a degree of compositional content and integrity often absent in the genre.” – Progression “...orchestral jazz-rock...of the kind scarcely made anymore; virtuosic, tasteful, and melodically pleasing.” – Exposé Drummer/composer Patrick Forgas first came to prominence when in 1977, aged 26, he released his debut album Cocktail, half of which featured him handling most of the instrumentation as well as singing, along with one 20-minute, full band suite, “My Trip”, recorded with various members of Zao and Magma. Forgas’s self-confessed prime influence was Soft Machine, and his high-pitched vocals and nonsense lyrics led to him being dubbed “the French Robert Wyatt”. The album only sold moderately in the context of dwindling interest in progressive rock and jazz-rock, and a band assembled for live work was dismantled after a few months of one-off engagements, leaving a composed follow-up album unrecorded. The 1980s saw a couple of ill-fated attempts at re-branding himself as a goofy pop singer until, under the auspices of Muséa Records’ Alain Juliac, he returned to a direction more akin to his 1970s work, albeit performing mostly on synths, programming and vocals having sold his drum kit.

  • Jean-Philippe Rykiel

  • Pen, Pain and Poem: Feminist-Humanist Works of Sarup
JAC : A Journal Of Composition Theory ISSN : 0731-6755 Pen, Pain and Poem: Feminist-Humanist works of Sarup Dhruv Dr.Khevana Desai Assistant professor, Department of Sociology, Mithibai College of Arts, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India Email: [email protected] Abstract Sarup Dhruv, a voice from Gujarat was born in an independent nation (born a year after India attained freedom) and ultimately became the voice of the ones who never tasted freedom. She is not just the voice of the neglected but a voice most neglected in the mainstream and standardized Gujarati literature. She is the one who experienced marginalization in the literary world and yet never ceased to worry, write or work for every single strata of the marginalized society. Her poems are an emblem of passion with which she has moved in the world of Gujarati literature like wings on fire. Her works are a reflection of her activism filled with social compassion, social work and ideas of empowerment of women, dalit and other marginalised sections that reshaped her vocabulary, insight and perception. For her poetries of protest could not and should not be confined to rigid „forms‟ with stereotyped content. It should be the voice of the voiceless and not a song for applauses and appraisal. Her poems and other writings are denoted as fearless, „free‟ and fiery or rather for the mainstream literary world „a deviance from the established‟. The paper attempts to highlight and analyse the path breaking and unconventional contribution of Sarup Dhruv not just in Gujarati literature in particular but in Indian women‟s writings at large.

Wyatt, Ayers, Hopper and their new friends Daevid Allen and Mike Ratledge formed the Soft Machine; whereas Sinclair and the others went on to form Caravan. Soft Machine (103), one of the greatest rock bands of all times, started out with albums such as Volume Two (mar 1969 - apr 1969) that were inspired by psychedelic-rock with a touch of Dadaistic (i.e., nonsensical) aesthetics; but, after losing Allen and Ayers, they veered towards a personal interpretation of Miles Davis' jazz-rock on Three (may 1970 - jun 1970), their masterpiece and one of the essential jazz, rock and classical albums of the 1970s. Minimalistic keyboards a` la Terry Riley and jazz horns highlight three of the four jams (particularly, Hopper's Facelift). The other one, Moon In June, is Wyatt's first monumental achievement, blending a delicate melody, a melancholy atmosphere and deep humanity.
