Page 1/21 Abstract Plasmodium knowlesi is the main cause of malaria in Sarawak, where studies on vectors of P. knowlesi have been conducted in only two districts. Anopheles balabacensis and An. donaldi were incriminated as vectors in Lawas and An. latens in Kapit. We studied a third location in Sarawak, Betong, where of 2,169 mosquitoes collected over 36 days using human-landing catches, 169 (7.8%) were Anopheles spp. PCR and phylogenetic analyses identied P. knowlesi and/or P. cynomolgi, P. eldi, P. inui, P. coatneyi and novel Plasmodium spp. in salivary glands of An. latens and An. introlatus from the Leucosphyrus Group and in An. collessi and An. roperi from the Umbrosus Group. Phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequences indicated three P. knowlesi-positive An. introlatus had been misidentied morphologically as An. latens, while An.

A survey of 200 respondents in the Song district was conducted. To determine the objective eth- nolinguistic vitality, a structural analysis was performed on their sociolinguistic backgrounds. The results show the Iban language dominates in family, friend- ship, transactions, religious, employment, and education domains. The language use patterns show functional differentiation into the Iban language as the “low language” and Malay as the “high language”. The respondents have positive at- titudes towards the Iban language. The dimensions of language attitudes that are strongly positive are use of the Iban language, Iban identity, and intergenera- tional transmission of the Iban language. The marginally positive dimensions are instrumental use of the Iban language, social status of Iban speakers, and prestige value of the Iban language. Inferential statistical tests show that language atti- tudes are influenced by education level. However, language attitudes and useof the Iban language are not significantly correlated. By viewing language use and attitudes from the perspective of ethnolinguistic vitality, this study has revealed that a numerically dominant group assumed to be safe from language shift has only medium vitality, based on both objective and subjective evaluation.

Bagaimanakah persaingan di antara kedua-dua kerajaan dan penglibatan wazir di Brunei dalam isu Sungai Trusan membawa kepada penyerahan Sungai Trusan kepada Kerajaan Sarawak? Apakah masalah di Sungai Lawas yang menyebabkan Kerajaan SBUB menyerahkan kawasan tersebut kepada Kerajaan Sarawak? Bagaimanakah Kerajaan Sarawak menyelesaikan tuntutan para pengiran dan Brooke Johnson bagi memenuhi syarat Kerajaan British bagi mengambil Sungai Lawas? Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa penolakan penduduk Sungai Lawas menjadi elemen penting yang membawa kepada penyerahan Sungai Lawas kepada Kerajaan Sarawak. Sejumlah 477 atau 67.47 peratus daripada jumlah kes ini telah dikesan di lima buah daerah iaitu di Daerah Kuching, Bintulu, Sri Aman, Miri dan Song. Daerah-daerah yang merekodkan kes pada hari ini ialah Daerah Kuching (247), Bintulu (88), Sri Aman (53), Miri (46), Song (43), Subis (40), Kapit (32), Mukah (25), Samarahan (24), Sibu (21), Beluru (17), Bau (12), Marudi (10), Asajaya (9), Selangau (8), Tatau (6), Tanjung Manis (5), Betong (4), Belaga (3), Kabong (3), Sarikei (2), Lubok Antu (2), Serian (2), Bukit Mabong (1), Kanowit (1), Pusa (1), Tebedu (1) dan Telang Usan (1). Ini menjadikan jumlah keseluruhan kes telah meningkat kepada 52,581. Daripada 707 kes baharu yang dilaporkan, seramai 39 orang telah menunjukkan tanda dan mengalami gejala jangkitan COVID-19 semasa saringan dijalankan. 1 Kenyataan Media JPBN Bil 159/2021 Manakala, seramai 582 orang kes atau yang dikesan adalah terdiri daripada individu yang telah diberikan arahan perintah kuarantin. Secara ringkas kes-kes ini terdiri daripada: • 437 kes merupakan saringan individu yang mempunyai kontak kepada kes positif COVID-19 (17 kes bergejala); • 143 kes merupakan saringan individu dalam kluster aktif sedia ada (kes tidak bergejala); • 104 kes merupakan lain-lain saringan di fasiliti kesihatan (1 kes bergejala); • 21 kes merupakan saringan individu bergejala di fasiliti kesihatan; • 1 kes melibatkan individu yang balik dari luar negara (Import A) iaitu dari Holland (kes tidak bergejala); • 1 kes melibatkan individu yang balik dari negeri-negeri lain di dalam Malaysia (Import B) (kes tidak bergejala).

Medical Officer, World Health Organization Sarawak Malaria Pilot Project, Marudi (Baram), Sarawak SYNOPSIS A general malaria survey of Sarawak and Brunei, two of the territories of British Borneo, is described. Contrary to what was expected in view of the climate and the general conditions, the prevalence of malaria in Sarawak and Brunei proved, on the average, to be low. The coastal areas were found to be practically free from the disease, although epidemics have occurred there in recent years. Malaria was found to be endemic in the hilly and mountainous interior. In fact, topography proved to be an important factor in malaria prevalence, the spleen- and parasite-rates, generally speak- ing, being higher the more abrupt the country. Differences were also observed in the prevalence among the various racial groups, but these were considered to be due to different habits and customs rather than to race itself. Entomological studies showed that Anopheles leucosphyrus Donitz was the main malaria vector in the interior of Sarawak, A. barbirostris playing a secondary role. A. leucosphyrus balabacensis had already been reccgnized as the malaria vector in Brunei. The favourable results of a first field trial of residual insecticides are mentioned and plans for a nation-wide malaria-control pro- gramme are briefly outlined. The present paper summarizes the results of a general malaria survey of Sarawak and the neighbouring State of Brunei, two British territories on the north-west coast of the Island of Borneo.

Abstract Mangrove macro-algae grow epiphytically on pneumatophores, prop roots and stems in the brackish and marine water environment. They are unique to certain mangrove habitats and an understanding of their abundance may indicate the health of mangrove ecosystems. The macro-algae of Lawas mangrove forests are mainly Bostrychia spp. followed Caloglossa spp., Enteromorpha spp., Catenella sp. and Rhizoclonium sp. The dominate species of mangrove was Rhizophora sp. followed by Ceriops sp., Lumnitzera spp. and Avicennia alba in Lawas mangrove forest at Miri, Sarawak. The biomass of macro-algae was 34.16 mg/DW/cm2 for prop roots surface area of Rhizophora sp. and 1.30 mg/DW/cm2 for pneumatophores surface area of Avicennia alba which is comparable with other studies elsewhere. In the past, several studies found that the algal mats associated with mangroves represent a major source of primary producers, energy source in food web, carbon storage, habitat for small invertebrates, sediment trappers and nitrogen fixers. However, in recent years the macro-algae from mangrove habitat have been tested for potential use for volatile constituents and antibiotic activities, bio-indicators of contamination and bio-monitors of metal contamination in estuarine ecosystems.

Received 27 June, 2014; Accepted 8 September, 2014 Water quality and trace elements of river water of Awat-Awat, Sundar and Trusan river from Awat-Awat Lawas Mangrove Forest Limbang (AALMFL) Sarawak, Malaysia were investigated in the current research. This study used the application of Water Quality Index (WQI) and National Water Quality Standards (NWQS) provided by Department of Environment (DOE) Malaysia in evaluating the quality of the river. Fifty two different sampling points were selected from upstream, middle stream and downstream of river. Monitoring, sampling and water analysis was conducted from November 2012 until May 2014. The analysis of water samples were performed according to Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater APHA 2005. Based on Malaysian Water Quality Index (WQI) by DOE Malaysia, overall water quality status at the study area was found categorized under Class III which represents moderate water quality status. The main concern of water quality in this river is high level of suspended solids and turbidity. The present data of the physico-chemical analysis of river water is very useful for assessment of the mangrove forest ecosystem.
