The findings show that over 200,000 more people are cycling at least once a week than were in October 2011. This exceeds the target set by Sport England four years ago by over 75,000 and brings the total number of people in England now cycling at least once a week to just under two million. The results also found the number of women cycling more regularly has risen dramatically over the last 12 months to almost 63,000.

This chapter aims to contextualise these doubts within the wider frame of British sport, and more specifically the decline of trust. We trace the emergence of Team Sky from the National Lottery funded track team, arguing that the London Olympics was a pinnacle of medal-winning and public admiration. The turn towards professional road cycling was accompanied by new approaches to medicalisation. The Fancy Bears hack of WADA’s database, whistle-blower insights, Government inquiries, and media scrutiny have presented the public with sufficient evidence and critique to undermine the reputation of Team Sky’s management and riders. Other factors have contributed to the decline of trust, not least evidence of doping from the Russia investigations, the leaked IAAF blood files, the role of the IAAF senior managers, the conflict between WADA and the IOC over banning Russian athletes, and other related debates. We argue that the high-profile debate over the use of drugs in British professional cycling can be understood as symptomatic of a wider malaise affecting British sport, which in turn can be contextualised, explained, and seen as part of a broader shift in scepticism regarding political leaders and media organisations.

Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome (four times) and now Geraint Thomas have won six of the last seven Tour de France GC “yellow jerseys”, riding for Team Sky. With this victory, Team Sky has now won the “General Classification” (or GC) competition in the last four grand tours on the trot (the Tour de France twice, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España). The world of professional cycling has, like many sports at the professional level, changed a great deal over the years. This article focuses on how data- and facts- driven risk management is embedded into modern-day race strategy, tactics and decision-making in the grand tour races. Examples from Team Sky are provided in this article, with parallels drawn to achieving success in business.     Marginal gains: Olympic lessons in high performance for organisations David Hall, Derek James and Nick Marsden Introduction A concept known as ‘marginal gains’, an approach to performance improvement in elite sport came to prominence during the London 2012 Olympics when Team GB cycling won a record eight gold medals. Since National Lottery funding was awarded in 1997 to develop British cycling, the ethos of making aggregated small gains in many areas to improve overall performance has been central to its success. The concept of marginal gains is not new and the approach is used in many sports, where it has contributed to individual and team achievement at the highest level. Some examples of marginal gains and their development in sport are outlined below. A management perspective is provided which considers the implementation of a marginal gains approach in a Fire and Rescue Service organisations. Team GB cycling Dave Brailsford, British Cycling Performance Director appearing on BBC Breakfast on the final morning of the Olympic track cycling competition, explained the concept of marginal gains as: “ The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improved it by 1%, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together ”. In other words, it is the aggregation of a number of small gains that result in a large gain in overall performance, which can be significant in terms of achievement and outcomes. Brailsford sums it up: “ Put simply... how small improvements in a number of different aspects of what we do can have a huge impact on the performance of the team ” (Slater, 2012).
