Interdisciplinary Minor in Women’s and Gender Studies ABOUT THE INTERDISCIPLINARY MINOR IN WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIES As a student in the interdisciplinary minor in Women’s and Gender Studies at St. John’s University, you examine how social structures of power based on gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, social class, and other intersecting forces influence our lives and communities. While women’s and gender studies continue to explore women’s experiences and underrepresentation in knowledge production, the field also examines the ways gender relations, including masculinities, combine with other categories of difference and become embedded in social, political, and cultural formations. This 18-credit minor is an excellent complement to all majors. The professors who teach in the minor represent the departments of sociology, history, government and politics, English, and art and design and bring their expertise to the study of gender inequalities. With their guidance, you delve into a rich body of knowledge to explore historical, artistic, scientific, and literary issues through the lens of gender. You can select the minor in Women’s and Gender Studies at any time prior to graduation, as long as you satisfactorily complete the required courses. With approval of the program director, you may be able to apply internship credits to the minor and explore particular gender issues through real-world work experience. WHAT CAN I DO WITH A MINOR IN WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIES? With the strong analytical, communication, and research skills you develop in the minor, along with your understanding of cultural, social, and political forces that shape concepts of gender, you’ll be a competitive applicant for jobs in government, public policy, research, or service organizations. -

5 weaPons of mass seduction Performing Pop Masculinity To all intents and purposes Harry Styles, unofficial frontman of internationally renowned boy band One Direction, could easily be mistaken for a young Mick Jagger (see Figure 5.1). The men’s good looks, broad smiles, matching windswept hair styles and shared fashion sensibilities bridge a 51-year age gap. Both are singers who have enjoyed the adoration of a passionate fan following, yet in terms of the version of masculinity each represents, the two could not be more different. While Jagger is openly admired by both sexes, few men admit to being fans of Harry Styles whose following is commonly depicted as restricted to teen and pre-teen females. Unlike the older man, Styles radiates a wholesome, good humoured exuberance, appears to genuinely like female company and is never happier than when exalting the women in his life. He also differs from the Rolling Stones leader in showing a marked preference for older female partners, whereas Jagger figure 5.1 Harry Styles. 84 Weapons of Mass Seduction is always seen in the company of much younger women.1 Jagger’s androgy- nous charm is tinged with danger and more than a hint of misogyny: he has a reputation for treating his partners callously, and from the outset, chauvinism themes of mistrust permeated the Rolling Stones’ songbook.2 The younger singer is also androgynous but his failure to comply with core characteristics of normative masculinity underscores much of the antipathy directed towards by critics, highlighting deeply entrenched prejudice against those who fail to comply with accepted expressions of gender. -

We are told that this is bad. We are told that television is bad for us, that it is bad for our families, and that it is wasting our time. But not all television is that way. Some television shows have what we might call “literary pretensions.” Shows such as Twin Peaks, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, and LOST have been both critically acclaimed and the subject of much academic study. In this course, we shall examine a select few of these shows, watching complete seasons as if they were self-contained literary texts. In other words, in this course, you will watch TV and get credit for it. You will also learn to view television in an active and critical fashion, paying attention to the standard literary techniques (e.g. character, theme, symbol, plot) as well as televisual issues such as lighting, music, and camerawork. In order to identify the roles of two sex worker organizations (Durjoy and Nari Mukti) and to develop the recommendations for them, I conducted my MA thesis in Bangladesh in 2009. In Bangladesh, there is a need for more research on social issues related to HIV/AIDS. Hence, this study’s exploration of both stigma and AIDS issues is valuable. To collect information on these issues, I interviewed eight individual sex workers and conducted six focus group discussions; in total there were 39 participants. -

Ude, Jr., Esq., Mazzoni Center Dear Senators: Thank you for the opportunity to discuss barriers in Pennsylvania for members of the transgender community to legally change their name and gender. I am submitting this written testimony to supplement the comprehensive memorandum and testimony submitted by Dechert LLP from Mazzoni Center and several other organizations. Mazzoni Center is a Philadelphia nonprofit organization whose mission is provide quality comprehensive health and wellness services in an LGBTQ-focused environment, while preserving the dignity and improving the quality of life of the individuals we serve. Our services include comprehensive primary and preventive care and a range of other services specifically for transgender, gender non-binary and gender expansive individuals. I direct our legal services program, which provides direct legal services to, and advocacy on behalf of, low-income LGBTQ individuals in a range of areas. Each year, more than half of the requests for assistance we receive – hundreds each year – are from transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people seeking help with the name change process, with changing gender- markers on identification, or both. Our resources limit our capacity to provide direct representation outside of Philadelphia, but individuals and attorneys contact us for information or assistance on these issues from all throughout Pennsylvania; in the past decade, we have been contacted for by people in 57 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. -

This public conference was hosted by McGill University’s Faculty of Law and Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies, in partnership with Thompson Rivers University’s Faculty of Law. The keynote presentation was a conversation between Dr. Viviane Namaste and Dalia Tourki, where they asked each other questions. Keynote Speakers Dr. Viviane Namaste (VN), Professor, Simone de Beauvoir Institute, Concordia University, Montréal. Dalia Tourki (DT), Former Advocate and Public Educator at the Centre for Gender Advocacy, Montreal, and a board member of AGIR (LGBTQ Action with Migrants and Refugees), Montreal. She coordinated research projects, organized marches, published articles, gave numerous conferences, helped introduce a trans rights bill, and spearheaded a lawsuit to advance trans rights in Quebec. LGBTQ+ Glossary of Terms This glossary is offered as a starting point for discussion. Language is dynamic, continually growing and changing. This is particularly true with the language we use to identify ourselves. We should strive to ensure that our language does not demean, exclude or offend, by respectfully allowing others to self-identify and by mirroring those terms and identities. Ally: A person who does not identify with a group, but still advocates for that group's rights. Aromantic: In its broadest meaning, this umbrella term encompasses anyone who has a low or absent romantic attraction or interest in romantic activity. Sexual relationships may be desired. Asexual: In its broadest meaning, this umbrella term encompasses anyone who has a low or absent sexual attraction or interest in sexual activity. Intimate romantic/affectional relationships may be desired. Biphobia: Negative feelings, attitudes, actions, or behaviors against people who are, or are perceived to be, bisexual or pansexual. It may also be a fear of one's own bisexual or pansexual attractions. Bisexual: A person who is sexually and/or romantically attracted to men and women. Cisgender: Someone who is comfortable with the gender they were assigned at birth. The state of not being transgender. Cissexism: The systems of advantages bestowed on people who are cisgender. It can also be the assumption that all people are, or should be, cisgender. Crossdresser: A cisgender person who dresses in clothing deemed inappropriate by society for the gender assigned them at birth. The purpose is usually emotional comfort or erotic fulfillment. Drag King & Drag Queen: A person who cross-dresses as a means of performance or entertainment. -

A Different Kind of Closet: Queer Censorship in U.S. LGBTQ+ Movements since World War II By James Martin Abstract: Since World War II, there has been an increased visibility of LGBTQ+ communities in the United States; however, this visibility has noticeably focused on “types” of queer people – mainly white, middle class, cisgender gays and lesbians. History remembers the 1969 Stonewall Inn riots as the catalyst that launched the movement for gay rights and brought forth a new fight for civil and social justice. This paper analyzes the restrictions, within LGBTQ+ communities, that have been placed on transpersons and gender nonconforming people before and after Stonewall. While the riots at the Stonewall Inn were demonstrative of a fight ready to be fought, there were many factors that contributed to the push for gay rights.
