The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands have been an autonomous region of Spain since 1983. Little is recorded of the earliest inhabitants of the island. Burial chambers and traces of habitation from the Neolithic period (6000–4000 BC) have been discovered, particularly the prehistoric settlements called talaiots, or talayots. From 707, the island was increasingly attacked by Muslim raiders from North Africa.

  • Valorisation of Hanging Tomatoes in Spain
Preparatory action on EU plant and animal genetic resources Valorisation of hanging tomatoes in Spain Overview The hanging tomato is a very well-known type of tomato and is widespread in different regions of Spain, from the Mediterranean East, to inland areas, such as Cáceres, and Atlantic areas like Galicia. Beyond these visible characteristics, another common connection shared by hanging tomatoes is their selection by peasant communities with the common aim (convergent selection) of enjoying tomatoes during the winter months. The hanging tomato is a type of tomato that, when cultivated in strict non-irrigated systems or with low irrigation provisions, is characterised by the fact that, once harvested and stored in certain conditions, it can be conserved for approximately 6 months (sometimes even 9 months) (cf. Figures 1 and 2). This means that if the tomato is harvested in July and August, the fruit can be preserved until at least February of the following year. In fact, traditionally, fruits that have a lower capacity for conservation are consumed fresh, whereas those that keep for longer are used for seeds to plant the next crop season. This type of tomato has a widespread and stable commercialisation, primarily in Catalonia. However, there are other areas, such as Mallorca or Menorca, where it is also highly valued by consumers. It was traditionally destined for consumption out of season, both fresh and when conserved. It even formed part of specific recipes such as romesco sauce. However, the appearance on the market of winter productions grown in greenhouses in regions of Southern Spain, as well as from other warmer countries, has relegated hanging tomatoes to the main geographical areas where the typical ‘pan con tomate’ [‘bread with tomato’] is consumed (cf.

Research on Quaternary shorelines from Mallorca. Historical background Many researchers have worked on the Quaternary deposits scattered along the littoral zones of Mallorca Island. As a consequence, there are a significant number of publications on this topic, being almost impossible to assemble a comprehensive review in a general chapter like this one. Therefore, the present paper exclusively provides a historical background on the knowledge of Mallorcan Quaternary shorelines, along with their paleontological remains and chronology. La Marmora (1834) was the first geologist writing about Quaternary deposits on Mallorca Island. This author reports the presence of sandstones (with modest fossil content) in the southern flat areas of the island and conglomerates with marine shells, resembling those of present-day beaches, in just a few places. Haime (1855) dedicates only a paragraph in his study on the Quaternary paleontology, citating 12 species. Hermite (1879) distinguishes two levels within the marine raised beaches existing to the east of Palma Bay. The lower level is composed of some conglomerates previously mentioned by Haime, containing Acanthocardia tuberculata, along with other species currently living in the Mediterranean Basin, except for the thermophilous species Strombus bubonius.
