NOVEMBER 2013 THIS MONTH This month’s Romsey Modeller is the biggest yet running to an extortionate 34 pages! Much of the content is focused on the club’s first display at Scale ModelWorld which proved to be a brilliant weekend. Both Paul and I couldn’t have been happier with our display which was one of the best presented in the hall. One sad piece of news concerns Brian Boot who’s article on his Vickers Valiant is found in this magazine. Brian Sampson wrote to inform me that on his way to Telford the driver of the car in which Brain was travelling had a heart attack and hit the accelerator instead of the brake, they struck the barrier and ended in the ditch. Brian is currently in West Middlesex hospital flat on his back. Brain went see him at weekend and hopefully will have more news on Wednesday. I’m sure you will join me in sending Brian our best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery. Just a reminder that it’s our annual competition on Wednesday , I am looking forward to seeing the results of this year’s efforts on the competition table. At 18 years old, I graduated from the best-grade high school in my hometown, where no weekend, no summer or winter break, and no holidays are allowed, where every student is required study in classroom from 7:00 to 22:00 every day, where 60 students sit in a small busy classroom breathing the foulest air ever. This experience makes me cherish my Bachelor and Master study life as well as its freedom more than anyone else. I appreciate SCU and TU Delft for giving me opportunity to learn knowledge and explore my interest while enjoying my youth. This thesis focuses providing technical advice on overtopping flood hazard reduction at Churchill Barriers. I am motivated to work on topic because it combines my interest in numerical model and risk analysis with passion for flood hazard reduction. To apply knowledge and theory I learned from lecture to a real case is not only interesting but also challenging. I spend plenty of effort to develop an approach that can lead to a solution of research question, which was revised ten of times while realizing it. -
Crónica De Un Viaje De Buceo a Scapa Flow. Islas Órcadas (Orkney)
En 2010 hice un viaje de un mes por Escocia, con mi mujer y una pareja de amigos. Ninguno de ellos buceaba, pero, aún así, nos organizamos para que yo pudiese ir al agua, en Scapa Flow, durante dos días. Fueron mis cuatro primeras inmersiones en aguas frías, y me dejaron profundamente impresionado. Tanto que, tres años más tarde, en 2013, organicé con Carlos Blanco, mi compañero de buceo habitual, un viaje de doce días a las Órcadas (Orkney) para poder disfrutar plenamente de los pecios del Flow. El 31 de Agosto salimos de Las Palmas en un vuelo directo de RyanAir con destino a Edimburgo, a donde llegamos a las seis de la tarde, para recoger un coche de alquiler y emprender rápidamente los 425 Km. del viaje hasta el puerto de Scrabster, a donde llegamos pasadas las doce de la noche. Pasamos la noche en el Ferry Inn, en el mismo puerto, al lado de la terminal y, el domingo día 1 de septiembre, embarcamos, a las doce del mediodía, en el primer ferry de la Serco NorthLink con destino a Stromness. El viaje en el ferry fue terrible, olas de más de tres metros y un fuerte viento que no presagiaban nada bueno para el buceo de los días siguientes. Una espesa niebla lo cubría todo y ni siquiera se veían las islas cuando pasábamos por los estrechos. Finalmente llegamos a Stromness, bajo una ligera lluvia y nos dirigimos al Royal Hotel, donde nos alojaríamos durante nuestra estancia en las islas y, tras descargar el equipaje, fuimos a visitar Scapa Scuba, nuestro centro de buceo. -

Battle Name: Largs Council area: N Ayrshire Date: 2nd October 1263 UKFOC number: 430 LARGS 1 SUMMARY 1.1 CONTEXT Despite the Scots victory at Renfrew in 1164 and several campaigns by Scottish kings to conquer the territory, the Norse had retained control of the Isles and Argyll. There they maintained their rule in a semi-autonomous fashion under the overlordship of the kings of Norway. In response to the continued pressure from the Scots, the king of Norway mounted a pre-emptive attack to secure Norse control of the territory. In July 1263 King Haco is said to have sailed from Bergen with 200 ships. In the Hebrides he was joined by the King of Man with additional forces. From there they sailed down the coast of Scotland raiding the mainland. Initial negotiations were opened but this time was used by the Scots to buy time to raise their forces. Then in a storm some of the Norse ships were beached at Largs and an armed engagement began, forcing Haco to land his main force in disadvantageous circumstances on a difficult coast. (1). 1.2 ACTION Little is known of the detail of the action, which soon escalated into full battle, but it seems that the Norse were never able to form up fully in battle array before they were engaged. The arrival of Scottish reinforcements may finally have turned the tide of the action, forcing the Norse army to break. It is said that they were then pursued with great slaughter, with most fleeing to their boats. (1). -

Evidence for this activity can be seen in the landscape, and in the form of small finds and grave goods. They tell us that Norse families settled here, while historic accounts of battles and invasion routes describe the Norse struggle for control of this beautiful and resource-filled landscape. The Hidden Heritage Project is hosted by Arrochar and Tarbet Community Development Trust. It aimed to involve the community in investigating and interpreting the area’s heritage. This leaflet was part-financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and also by the Scottish Government and the European Community Argyll and the Islands LEADER 2007-2013 Programme. Lordship of the Isles The Lordship of the Isles comprised a varying extent of land at different times, but can be roughly approximated to Argyll. It included the Hebrides (Skye and Ross from 1438), Knoydart, Ardnamurchan, and the Kintyre peninsula. The Lordship developed under descendants of the Vikings, mixed with Gaels and Scots. Its first great historical leader is often said to be Somerled who ruled in the 12th century. It was a maritime and seafaring kingdom and as such its heraldry always contained a galley. It was effectively in the 12th and early 13th centuries an independent kingdom within Scotland.
