Dr. James Naismith, the creator of basketball, participated. The first exhibition Homeshow, an exhibition show that took place after the team put on shows in other communities around the Northeast, took place in May of 1905. The touring and the Homeshow is a tradition that continues throughout the history of the Springfield College Gymnastics team. The first full-time Varsity Men’s Gymnastics coach was Louis C. Schroeder (class of 1912), in 1915. Schroeder was succeeded five years later, in 1921, by Leslie J. Judd; a position he held until 1956. Judd is widely considered a father of modern Gymnastics. Under his leadership, the varsity gymnastics team attained international fame. Perhaps the greatest contribution Coach Judd made to the team was the world-famous Living Statuary of Youth or the Tableaux. Women’s gymnastics became an intercollegiate team in the 1963-64 school year, and was coached by Diane Potter. Arguably, the team’s greatest successes came under Mimi Murray. In her first year, 1969, the team went 7-0 and hosted and won the first National College Women’s Championship. Materials in this collection include newspaper clippings, magazine articles, news releases, manuscripts, scripts (including notecards), printed materials, correspondence, tickets, artwork, posters, memorandums, newsletters, notes, flyers, brochures, programs, schedules and rosters from performances, photographic prints, slides, negatives, film (16mm and various video formats), VHS videos, uniforms and other clothing and memorabilia having to do with the Springfield College Men’s & Women’s Varsity Gymnastics teams, the Springfield College Exhibition Team, and the Springfield College annual Gymnastics Homeshow. Materials date from the 1890s into the 2010s, with the bulk of the materials coming from the 1960s to the early 2000s. Materials were received from different places at different times. Z08-71 - September 2008 acquisition from Dr. Mimi Murray contained gymnastics materials from 1967-68 to 1975-76. Duplicates were removed where found, and materials were minimally arranged and verified. All materials were rehoused and some basic preservation of materials was undertaken, such as putting photographs into plastic sleeves and separating newsprint and acidic papers. Original materials had no or very little original order; therefore, original order has not been maintained. Collection arranged and Finding Aid written by Jeffrey Monseau, June 2018. ARRANGEMENT Since materials came from different sources at different time, there is no original arrangement inherent in the collection. The World Cup series were organized in Azerbaijan for three years in a row. Already in 2005, the strongest gymnasts of the planet - the participants of the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships gathered in Baku. This event became the first World Championships in Olympic sport discipline not only in Azerbaijan but on the whole region. In 2007, 2009 and 2014, Azerbaijan hosted new major competitions – the European Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics. In 2015, the events in 6 gymnastics disciplines took place within the framework of the 1st European Games.

    American Cup returns to Greensboro, N.C., in 2019 GREENSBORO, N.C., April 26, 2018 – The American Cup, the USA’s most prestigious international invitational and part of the International Gymnastics Federation’s all-around World Cup series, returns to the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum Complex on March 2, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. ET. The American Cup, which was held in Greensboro in 2014, is the anchor of a week that includes four gymnastics events. In addition to the American Cup, the Triple Cup weekend includes the Nastia Liukin Cup on March 1 at 7 p.m. and the men’s Elite Team Cup at 6 p.m. on March 2. The Greensboro Coliseum Complex is also hosting the 2019 Greensboro Gymnastics Invitational Feb. 27-March 3, turning the city into “gymnastics central.” The USA’s Morgan Hurd of Middletown, Del./First State Gymnastics, and Yul Moldauer of Arvada, Colo./University of Oklahoma, won the 2018 American Cup. The American Cup showcases many of the world’s best male and female gymnasts in a one-day, all- around competition, and invitations to compete will be based on performances at the 2018 World Gymnastics Championships. Held in conjunction with the American Cup, the Nastia Liukin Cup features many of the country’s top Junior Olympic female gymnasts and is held at 7 p.m. on the night prior to the American Cup. Named after the 2008 Olympic gold medalist and one of the USA’s most popular gymnasts, the Nastia Liukin Cup showcases gymnasts who qualify through the Nastia Liukin Cup Series.

National teams participated in this championship. 6 sets of medals were played in the women competitions. 252 athletes from 76 countries fought for the right to be the best in world artistic gymnastics. Gymnasts aged 16 and over (born in 2002) took part in championship. Most of them were in the age group from 16 to 20 (181 women), the oldest was Oksana Chusovitina from Uzbekistan (43 years). The purpose of the research is to estimate their level of preparedness takin into account their preparation for the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics. Critical understanding of new information is a prerequisite for determining ways to further improve the training process aimed at achieving the highest sports result.

In addition are the roles that the NCAA and AAU had in U.S. gymnastics development. Presented are the nature of and the participation in the various past and present gymnastics events (apparatus). Listed are skills that were initially performed by U.S. gymnasts for each event, and the notable accomplishments of U.S. gymnastics luminaries. How American gymnasts fared in international competition, with special performances, through the years, starting with the 1904 Olympic Games up to the 2009 World Championships. Lists for U.S. gymnastics medal winners are provided for the U.S. Olympic Games, World Gymnastics Championships, World University Games and Pan American Games.
