Atletas Brasileiras Consagradas no Esporte - Daiane dos Santos – Ginástica Artística. Daiane Garcia dos Santos iniciou-se tardiamente no esporte. Foi descoberta pela professora Cleusa de Paula aos 11 anos, quando brincava em uma praça de Porto Alegre. Começou a treinar na AACETE (Associação dos Amigos do Centro Estadual de Treinamento Esportivo) e depois no Grêmio Náutico União. Aos 16 anos, conquistou duas medalhas (prata no salto sobre cavalos e bronze por equipes) nos Jogos Pan-americanos de Winnipeg (Canadá). Em 2003, passou a morar em Curitiba e durante o Pan- americano de Santo Domingo ganhou o bronze por equipes. No mesmo ano, fez história ao se tornar a primeira brasileira a conquistar uma medalha de ouro no Mundial de Ginástica, disputado em Anaheim, na Califórnia, EUA. Além disso, apresentou pela primeira vez o salto "duplo twist carpado", desenvolvido em parceria com o técnico ucraniano Oleg Ostapenko. Consistindo num salto em que a atleta gira em torno de si (twist) e depois dá um mortal duplo, o movimento foi batizado com seu nome, "Dos Santos". Daiane ganhou medalhas de ouro no solo em Stuttgart e Cottbus (Alemanha) e depois em Lyon (França) e no Rio de Janeiro (Brasil). Nas Olimpíadas de Atenas, em 2004, com problemas no joelho, foi a quinta colocada no solo, mas mostrou o "Dos Santos 2", o duplo twist esticado. Em dezembro de 2004, ao som da música "Brasileirinho", de Waldir Azevedo, tornou-se Campeã Mundial de solo em Birmingham (Inglaterra). No ano seguinte, a ginasta tentou defender seu título mundial em Melbourne, Austrália, mas acabou em sétimo lugar. -
